Oooh have you seen it is there a post in the movie thread I should be perusing?
I haven't gone on at length about it, but the recent FCH article sums up most of my feelings nicely
tl;dr - the movie doesn't do a great job building the characters realistically, but their chemistry and earnest joy in making this put it all over the top. Definitely a "sum of its parts" kind of thing, but it still succeeds in big, enjoyable ways
Yeah, I felt that signal to suspend disbelief early on with regards to the characters, who they are, and what their lives are like, and the movie rewarded me with a wonderful little story that makes you feel all the emotions and sticks with you long afterwards.
the punched nazi debate is difficult because i feel like there's pretty good points on both sides and i'm obviously clouded by some degree of emotion on it
it would be a lot simpler if the person who punched him went to the moon
Everything is simpler on the Moon, Elendil
Aside from survival, I mean
That's much more complicated.

I'm still not sure I like the ending
No one is. :P
But I'm also not sure what I would have preferred.
It was a hard movie to end, I think.

Super happy? Kinda happy? Wistful? Subversive?
The ending we got was mostly vague and unsatisfying; like, I think I know what it was going for, but I don't know if, on screen, it got the message across wholly.

- Chinese probably, but BBQ and Thai and Ramen are up there
- Black
- Yes, if you train them rigorously enough.
and the game has a trans character and you can talk to another character about it
but the question dialogue option about it turns out to be kind of insensitive but mostly ignorant and the character berates you over it and it's like oh jeez i didn't ask for this

It was a sort of
"interpret this as you will" ending, left to the audience to decide what it meant
, which is out of character with the rest of the film

It's unfortunate that you can't use the fascists own methods against them
I imagine they might shed those illusions right quick if they were suddenly the undesirables and getting mistreated by law enforcement, suffeing relentless, petty persecution by the government etc
Yes, unfortunate.
I'm hearing this a lot lately, though. Kind of has me worried.
how do you mean
like, you think that this sentiment arising in response to the alt-right gaining traction is a worrisome thing?
i mean, i realize it's an ignoble sentiment and all but it's fascism, one of the literal worst possible methods of government because humans are inherently insufficiently noble to hew to some sort of imagined benevolent fascism and instead devolve into performing purges, "disappeared" people, and terrible things happening in the name of "order" and "keeping such and such great"
historically it's just been a horrible thing every time. look at the Phillipines right now.
and these people living in relative comfort and luxury in the united states are looking at fascism and being like "yes, that's what we want, the boot on (not) our necks"
and it's just like "really?? really."

I wonder what meaningful correlation exists if any between being ok/not ok with punching nazis and having experience punching/being punched
Having a fair amount of experience in both the doling out and the reception of punches, I know I generally see them as less of a big deal than most people, though I would still avoid inflicting them on another person unless absolutely necessary, if only because freak accidents happen.

Well, worried in a possible outburst of civil violence kind of way.
I'm not against anti-fascism, and I don't want it to start going down that path because it tends to leave a wake in its path... but seeing the necessity of it also sucks because fuck here we are.
I don't really like violence in the real world, in real terms.

Yeah, I agree somewhat, and mainly
what I got was, "So things didn't end well for them but they both helped each other achieve their dreams, and they'll always love each other even if they aren't in each other's lives anymore, and plus they're very happy with where they are now."
But I'm not sure if that's the ending the rest of the film was building to. It's just kinda--random. I think much of the meaning taken from that part is from each persons' own projection.

As a stats person, I am more than happy to assist with design of that particular study.
