One thing to note about the Rift, you don’t NEED 3 sensors for a 360 degree setup. You can actually pull it off with two if you mount them up high and in opposite corners of the room. It works surprisingly well.
You would have to do that with the Vive as well. It's advertised as being 360 with only 2 sensors, but you have to give it the same consideration you do the Rift.
The first couple weeks with the Vive didn't always work perfectly, but I kept making adjustments, and it's great now.
It's not exactly the same, as the lighthouses have a larger tracking area/FOV than the rift cameras do. You can manage less (really none if done properly) blindspots with 2 of the lighthouses than you can 2 of the Rift cameras, which is why the Vive doesn't allow you to go above 2 with the current gen.
A single lighthouse is around 120 x 120 degrees tracking, while a rift camera is around 100 horizontal x 70 vertical, so it's a fairly decent difference in that regard. The lighthouses track at a longer distance as well -- from what I've heard they can both track farther than their advertised maximums, but I know that the lighthouses are listed at 5 meters, and I've had them over 7.5 m apart (you get a warning in Steam VR that tells you how far apart they are) with no discernible tracking issues.
I'm a huge Vive shill, and I agree with all your points. It being more forgiving is part of why I chose it over the Rift.
I just wanted to give a realistic sense of its setup. You still need to get the base stations mounted up high and in opposite corners of the room, as with the Rift.
Hey that sounds interesting! /Goes to look it up. Rift exclusive? Gross. Sigh.
Revive?
Yup, word is the beta worked perfectly with ReVive. But I don't want to purchase exclusives and support a practice I abhor.
That's your decision, but I think your stand affects the developers (who would probably prefer it to be multi platform) significantly more than Oculus (who were almost certainly the ones deciding to make it exclusive). Assuming it was a deliberate decision and not resourcing restraints.
I don't really care as much about exclusives though, so could be easier for me to reason away
As much as I dislike exclusivity, it's mostly because I want all my titles on Steam if at all possible. And I strongly dislike it in the console sense where the console you own is locked out of great games because someone else funded them.
But ever since Oculus reversed their stance on blocking Revive, I've put away my torch and pitchfork on the subject. I still haven't bought any games from the Oculus store to play on my Vive, but that's for reasons other than the anti-exclusivity angle. Mostly I'm lazy.
You still need to get the base stations mounted up high and in opposite corners of the room, as with the Rift.
I have my Rift cameras mounted at roughly head-height when sitting down, and they work fine from there, too. (command strips on the underside of some cabinets over the pc desk).
(oh, and re:USB issues -- I had a heck of a time getting things working, in the end I bought a secondary PCI USB3 card, and even then I had to use that one for normal USB2 stuff and the main motherboard USB3 ports for the Rift/sensors. It's pretty stable now, but it took a lot of swapping things around to get here. That said, this is a five-ish-year-old motherboard, so newer ones probably will work better).
Wow, I can't believe we are already on page 98. Can't wait for the new thread -- although I admittedly feel left out since no one talks about PSVR any more...

I have not been a console owner since Nintendo Wii, and that was my first since ColecoVision. I say that to say that I am thinking about getting a PS4 + PSVR. I am super fascinated by the VR technology and the games it can use. $750 for PS4 and VR add-on is a bit much, but it's a lot less than getting my computer up that far.
Potential downsides:
PS5 may come out in a few years, leading me to being on the outside of the technology curve again.
I have had vertigo in my life, and I am pretty worried about being unable to use VR sets.
A computer is a multi-tool (I use it to pay bills, look for and apply for jobs, online dating, etc, etc), whereas a PS is just for playing. Multi-use is more dollar efficient than single use, especially when it comes to something like gaming.
Of course now I'm looking at laptops... thanks a lot!
Their benevolence aside, it still sucks. I'd rather pay the developers directly instead of Oculus to play some of these.
I buy from Steam over Oculus when possible, but Valve is still taking their 30% cut. You're going to end up paying someone in addition to the developers wherever you buy from, and I'm inclined to doubt that Oculus is taking a larger cut right now.
I've been tempted to use ReVive and pick up stuff like Robo Recall.
Mostly what's been preventing me is general laziness, and already having a bunch of stuff I enjoy playing.

I just meant I'd rather not reward them for the exclusivity stuff. It's a pet peeve of mine even if the excuse is "But it wouldn't exist without these deals"

[*] I have had vertigo in my life, and I am pretty worried about being unable to use VR sets.
I have some mild issues being up high, like ladders and tree climbing. I haven't had any issues with VR, but once in a while a game will deliberately put you up on a cliff to exploit the illusion. Like stuff coming at you out of the screen in bad 3d movies.
That said, you should try it for yourself first. Lots of Best Buy and Microsoft stores have demos, and I highly recommend giving it a shot.

One of my controllers just started misbehaving. I was going for the steamvr window to pop out of beat saber into something friendlier on the arms when the controller decided to unpair. It still turns on, but its indicator light stays blue instead of turning to the green of 'I am talking to the rest of the system'. Gonna follow some instructions google showed me to see if they help get it talking again.
:edit: it's paired again, not sure why it unpaired though.

Does beat Saber work at all with a Windows Mixed Reality headset? I wouldn't be particularly interested in getting one anyways, since I know there are games I'd want to play that it wouldn't work well with, but I'm mostly curious.
Anyone who has played Robot Rescue in the free Playroom VR knows what I'nm talking about how it's one of the greatest VR experiences. But it was a short one at around 15 minutes long. They actually listened to the fans and are making a full game. I'm so psyched!

Playing seated might help with any sense of vertigo, too.
That said, there are a few games that have triggered my fear of heights while standing up. The free Spider-Man: Homecoming VR promo thing being by far the worst offender.

And on that note:
This might be old hat since I haven't watched the entire thread, but frontier studios will give you keys for other platforms if you already own their games on another. I just logged into my account and was able to get a key for oculus home since I had already purchased elite dangerous for steam.
edit: and the neatest part, I think I just owned the original edition, but oculus home says it is installing the commander deluxe edition. Could just be a naming thing, but free upgrades are welcome .

Came here to post about this. This trailer made me so happy when I saw it come up in my subs! Sometimes wishes do come true. They're actually doing it!

I know I am way, way late to this party but I tried Moss for the first time last night. I can’t say I felt such a sense of just pure joy that this game invokes in a long time. Quill is instantly lovable and the way this game presents everything to you is just breathtaking. It took about 10 seconds for me to be like “yup, his little mouse is my new best friend.” and feel actual dread when she was in danger. If you haven’t played it and you have a PSVR, drop what you are doing and play it now.

That's awesome. My close friend works for Polyarc and did 100% of the animations in the game. If you wanna send any special messages, critiques, or praise his way, let me know. That goes for everyone here too. He's always looking to improve...even after almost 20 years in the industry.

Lots of games are Steam exclusives for the same reason Oculus Home games are Home exclusives: The developer hasn't developed it for other platforms. The Oculus deal isn't forced exclusivity. It's "Use our money for developing your game on Home. After that, release it wherever you'd like." Oculus doesn't want to fund developers releasing on Steam, which is fair. Valve isn't giving money to anyone that doesn't release on Steam either. The only reason a game is exclusive to Home or to Steam is that they haven't released it on the other platform yet. And maybe they will and maybe they won't, but I can't get any Blizzard titles on Steam. Only older EA titles are on Steam. Since Oculus dropped the hardware lockout, there is literally no difference between Home and Steam and Battle.net and Origin.

Attempted an Expert run through the full song list on Beat Saber last night. I almost got through, but I'm not quite there yet as I did have to start two songs over once. That was quite the workout.
Platforming games are so neat in VR. It's like you're watching a little set or something. I want more of them.
It really is surprising how much VR adds. Outside VR Lucky's Tale looks pretty dull, but it's inexplicably compelling when you can look around their little diorama world.

Revive?
Oculus doesn't even try to prevent Revive, their money is paying for games for you.
Mine is also a Z170 board. Gigabyte though. Z170X-UD3 i think is the model of it.
I know it has a single usb type c port on it, and i think 4 to 6 type a 3.0 ports, not including the front ones.
