So. A case at work required me getting wrist-deep into Ubuntu.
God, I LOVE IT.
Two things are keeping me from turning this, my Alienware Art Laptop, into an Ubuntu Desktop:
A) I need to be able to run 1280x1024 desktop size. This proves odd on Ubuntu.
I need my Painshop Pro 9. I've tried Gimp, and don't get me wrong - it works for comics. I just don't know it. I know PSP like the back of my fucking hand. Must have.
Some of you wankstains here are running Linux. Thoughts?
i have a suse box
i'm thinking of converting over to linux on all my machines, but i'm too lazy
i'm comfortable with foobar too and would feel weird using something else

i think i want to try ubuntu on a non shitty machine next time, i liked the interface, but nothing fucking works on a fucking mac
My point.
All kidding aside, I understand that you can strip the code from a Windows prog more often than not and make it run in Linux.
It involves the binaries and floohickers and geeblestumps.
I'm a very experienced MS Admin, but I don't know a goddamned thing about Linux. I only know a few Unix commands because I ran a Unix server for a VERY short time. Any info is appreciated.
when i worked at earthlink
our unix admin was balding and had like half a dozen pagers and cell phones and he was like 24 and always stressed and stared at like 3 computers all day with about 2 dozen command windows open and he had reading glasses and regular glasses and i'm pretty sure he's dead by now

Burn the ISO to a cd, boot off the cd, and fucking install it. The graphical installer they include is fucking easier than shit.
Why, in my day we had to install our linux from a command shell, and you'd better hope your modem drivers are available in the main distro, or you're never getting any of your shit to work. In the snow, up hill, both ways.
My friend has been trying to Kubuntu working on his new computer for the past few weeks. His computer is too new so that the newest build release won't work on it, and neither will the last one. His is in a technological no mans land.
Install these damn nvidia drivers so I don't have to run at 800x600
Have you unpacked it and read the readme?
Yesss, I've even typed the right shit ino the terminal, but then when it restarts the GUI refuses to boot and it just gives me a command line. Luckily I was able to roll back the changes and shit, but man that was scary.
Remember that your Xorg.conf will also need to be setup properly to get your various resolutions.
I sometimes install linux for kicks. USed to be a hardcore slackware guy until ubuntu got cool. Thing is, there are no XFI drivers for my soundcard (and i won't use onboard), and creative is "supposed" to be getting some out this year so I might try it if they do.
Also.. if I can get ATI drivers to work, you lucky dudes with nvidia cards should be having no issues.

Uriel.. if it's dumping back our of X, it should show an error that is occuring in the X server. POst it in here and I might be able to help.
Should be in /etc/X11/xorg.conf if I remember correctly. It's the init file for the xserver (gnome/kde are just front end window managers for the xorg server).
from the command line you can use:
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf and check the displays settings. feel free to email me the xorg.conf file if you want me to look at it.

There have been times when I asked questions on linuxquestions.org, they're often answered within 10-15 minutes. I swear there must be dudes just constantly refreshing the index.

So how well does all this linux stuff work with windows drivers? Do you have to find linux versions of everything? If so, I doubt I'd have any luck playing with ubuntu on my old Dell laptop, but that piece of shit isn't any good for anything else anymore, so I might as well try.
Actually.. the older the comp.. the better chance someone has spent some time to develop drivers for it.
as far as I've seen the only thing that's a pain to get working under linux is suspend/hibernate on a laptop. as well as some wifi drivers might be harder to find.

Excellent! I doubt the wifi will be a big problem, since it's not built-in, just some add-on D-Link card.

I had a client when I was doing contract administration. They had a Suse box.
God, I hated that fucking thing.
Getting it to run mirrored drives was an exercise in HELL.
motherfucker doesn't even have flash support
my suse box just runs samba anyway
it was clarkconnect, but then i actually wanted to use it

A fucking MAC.
In my mind, I'm pissing on your leg RIGHT NOW.
it was an experiment
And what's up with the boot times on Suse?
WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?
Saying you only have one Mac is like saying you've only raped ONE altarboy.
You still have a Mac.
runs like total shit with 32mb ram and a 233mhz cpu
total shit

I have a mac and I use Ubuntu all the time. It's fucking godly, and once I get Airport Express working unter Edgy, I'm switching to it full time.

although i was never an expert admin or anything, i just fucked around to see if i could get the system running
They're all dead by now.
You can download it you know.
I once knew a Unix programmer who once worked for the KGB.
He was a crazy dude.
