Terrorist Attack at Ariana Grande Concert, 22 Dead, Suspect in Custody
So some shitheads did a thing tonight at a concert in Manchester England, initial reports are that 19 people are dead with 50 injured. I am sure those numbers will change.
No one has claimed responsibility that I can find, it appears to have been a nail bomb of some kind.
Edit:
Hopefully this was the correct thread to add this to. I just don't even have the energy right now to understand why some people are so awful. This was a concert with a bunch of kids. For fucks sake.
I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.
I copied this over from the terrorism thread, because the terrorism thread is super old.
Last I heard, the bombing was being "treated as if it was terrorism", but nobody was willing to say for sure. I'll update the thread title as more info is released.

I mean... it's hard to confuse an explosive device in a concert.
As odd as it is. I'm actually reasonably pleased at how little information is available. Normally this sort of thing gets top billing and stoking fears is on tap immediately without much of an actual investigation. I've no doubt that the normal pundit channels are already eyebrow deep in it, but I've seen very little from print/online first party media beyond, "We're still investigating."

This is horrible.
Yes but we don't know the color of the suspects yet.
BBC have a Live Blog which is a great source. They're reliably accurate for stuff like this.
Britain is in the middle of a General Election. The Conservatives have already suspended campaigning and it's expected the other parties will follow suit.
It looks very much like it was a nail bomb. There was also a stampede which probably caused a few more injuries. Local hospitals say they've been treating shrapnel wounds and crush injuries.
Some of the stories doing the rounds on social media that are NOT true:
ISIS claiming responsibility (Nope, nobody has yet)
There were multiple explosions (Every witness so far just mentions one bang)
There was shooting (Some witnesses heard something like gunshots, but nobody saw a shooter and no hospitals have mentioned gunshot wounds)
There's a gunman outside Oldham Hospital (I have no fucking idea where people got that from. I think someone mistook them turning patients away to keep their A&E dept clear for mass casualties as them going on lockdown or something.)
Another bomb was found (a "suspicious item" turned out to be discarded clothing which the police performed a controlled explosion on because when you're dealing with a possible terrorist attack you don't fuck around)

Yeah.. on the trip home tonight I was listening to BBC's reports and analysis. It was pretty horrifying. I guess a lot of kids at the venue too.

No, Manchester is NOT a "hotbed of Islamic radicals." It's where the soap "Coronation Street" is filmed.

Yeah, I picked it up on Facebook and went straight to BBC. It wasn't even the to headline and was only being referred to as "the Manchester incident".
So they've been playing it fairly quiet, or they were. Haven't checked any other headline places lately.

Looking around on twitter, some people are saying this might not be Islamic extremism but a deranged stalker of the singer at the concert?
Still, probably too early to pin down the reason behind the bomb. I travel to Manchester a lot to go shopping and for conventions, so this is horrific.

IIRC this wouldn't be her first run-in with a deranged stalker.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
Keeping their cards close to the chest is smart at this stage, because the usual way these things work is the bomb maker isn't the guy going and blowing themselves up. If they think they have a lead, not letting on will improve the chances of the bomb maker's capture.

Yeah it's wayyyyy too early to know who is responsible, or what BS "reason" they had. I think people are speculating because Islamic extremists, when they have bombs, tend to set off more than one, while the IRA and their splinter groups haven't bombed the UK in years, are mostly inactive, tend to claim responsibility quickly and usually call in a warning first if they're going for a civilian target. Plus they were fond of the multiple explosions approach too.
There hasn't been much of a history of extreme right wing terrorism in the UK, especially bombers. I can only think of one guy off the top of my head, a Neo-Nazi who nail bombed Brixton several times, targeting gay pubs.
The only thing is if this was some deranged stalker they created a big explosion. 19 deaths is a lot. It's not easy to make something that packs that much of a punch. It's a lot harder to make it in a way that can be transported to a concert arena without arousing suspicion or blowing yourself up.

This is a big point, one that was remarked on once the method used by the 2016 Brussels Bombings were made known. I won't specify the ingredients used to make their explosives, but I think even the Wikipedia article mentions the final compound and it's very shock-sensitive. How they managed to even transport it by car in a fully constructed state is remarkable.
As an aside, if you decide to look up what they made it will become obvious how attempting to ban or track such basic items is not a feasible angle of attack to preventing future incidents. This is even simpler chemistry than the DIY ANFO weapons used in Oklahoma City or by the IRA.
You know, in all of this I think there's a better way to define the problem we face. I'm not concerned by muslims, I'm concerned about Islamists. In the same way, in the US I'm not concerned by christians, but I am very fucking wary of Dominionists. And as for judaism, I don't know that a distinction has been made for the different threads of Zionism (or some label I have yet to encounter) but I think I have seen direct evidence that toxic strains of it definitely exist and have real power. Theocratic-minded politics is a dangerous and powerful thing, but we are hampered in facing it by the nature and degree of its expression in a variety of ways.

When someone intentionally blows up a room full of people "was it terrorism?" isn't even a question that should be asked. Let alone first, and certainly not dwelt upon. Because of course it was; in any sense that matters.
The problem we face are alienated and otherwise unhappy people searching for purpose or retribution. Whether they are driven by 4chan, a music video, or a slick terrorist e-Zine is immaterial to their capability or resolve.
They are simply murderers, and we should not credit them with the undue recognition that other labels might confer.

And I did not do that, quite specifically. I was the first poster in this thread beyond Jeffe's opening and I did it by noting that investigators believe this is an intentional act. And I do not intend to give the actors gravitas of a label or title, except one that might lead to their better opposition or destruction. Knowing your opposition and your allies in their totality are critical to planning any future moves, denying that will get us nowhere.

Well terrorism typically understood as ideologically motivated, and being pathologically and murderously obsessed with Ariana Grande while monstrous is not ideological (to choose an example).

Apologies, that was directed at the media/general public, not you. It was meant to be concurring with your first sentiment, that there has to be a better way to define the problem.

I didn't think so, which is why I was more specific to the opening statement; I mean no attack. I think we agree on the roots, the unhappiness of people and the draw of certain groups they can readily identify with. Which, in our time and various places, can be spotted. It is our aim to move against those groups while simultaneously preventing the advancement of the others we deem destructive if not absolutely then in a means that can be limited to our satisfaction.
Well terrorism typically understood as ideologically motivated, and being pathologically and murderously obsessed with Ariana Grande while monstrous is not ideological (to choose an example).
Then let the motivators be the terrorists. The killer is just a tool. What set that tool to purpose is not as concerning to me as how it was made, and the common thread that exists between would-be religious martyrs and school shooters a-like. Crazy stalkers probably fall through similar cracks, though they probably trend more toward just needing to be properly medicated; so fair point there on the distinction.

The difficulty is that the killer is used not only as a tool but as propaganda. The propaganda the killer generates reaches a greater pool of other potential victims of the ideology, and so on and so forth. We need to find a short-circuit for these paths to end them outright, before they become energetic enough for tragedies like we saw this past evening.
So I don't know how many of you have kids or young nieces or nephews, but there's this news program on the BBC called Newsround that's aimed at kids. It's pretty great.
Anyway whenever something upsetting happens that they need to cover, they point people to this section of their website, which gives advice to kids upset by what they're seeing and hearing.

Just to clarify: the initial reluctance to call it terrorism wasn't down to people not wanting to call a bombing terrorism. It was because nobody knew what had happened. The first survivors to emerge and tell their stories to the media were at the other end of the stadium, were confused and had only seen injuries caused by the panicked stampede. I heard one guy on BBC news - who has very obviously been caught up in the attack - confirm he'd only seen people who were hurt in the rush to get out, and repeat rumours he'd heard from others there that a speaker had blown.
It wasn't until later that people who had been much, much closer to the blast were able to describe what they'd experienced, by which time the media had a bunch of reports conflicting with their description of what has happened, so it took a while to be sure that there had been a large explosion. Even then, they couldn't be certain it was a bomb. The NHS staff were the first to identify it as a nail bomb because they were dealing with the wounded. It can be assumed that the police figured it out about the same time, but updating the press was low on their priorities.
Shit like this is crazy and confusing and if news outlets are being cautious about confirming what's happened there's a good reason for it, is what I'm saying here.
Well of course they would, the opportunistic scum bags
My 4 month old daughter has a cold; I'm sure ISIS would like to take credit for that if given the opportunity.
ISIS's claims of responsibility are usually at least semi-legit. It may not have been someone in contact with the core organization, but some asshole declaring allegiance online or something seems fairly likely.

From what I've seen, police are saying it's intentional but they haven't narrowed it down further yet. There is a notable factoid about the date though, as on May 22 2013 a soldier in the UK was attacked by a pair of men with knives.
