Random popup window after Win10 update for May 2017?

TransporterTransporter Registered User regular
I'm...kind of at my wits end for this, well, just annoying thing that keeps happening. Occasionally a window of some nature will pop up on my screen and vanish in like, less then .2 seconds. Which, wouldn't be a problem, except this window tends to mess with hard fullscreen games whenever it appears, kicking me back out to the desktop. It's not a constant thing, it happens, maybe once every 30 or 45 minutes, but it never happened before this update, and I have no idea what it is or how to stop it.

Sorry, I have no solutions to give but I'm experiencing this as well so you're not alone.

Ha... yeah, I've got this as well on windows 10. Haven't managed to catch it long enough to get any sort of title or anything even from the console window that pops up, so unfortunately haven't figured out yet what's causing it. I think mine goes back to before May, but it definitely started in the past couple months. I tried briefly to search for a solution without success, but haven't gotten annoyed enough to really dive deeply into it.

Try downloading some kind of Windows event logger, and once you notice the errant window pop up, check to see what the event logger says. Might show you which process is doing this.

    Also happening to me, weird

I also can't seem to get Win10 to update either itself or my windows defender virus protections, which is a bit more alarming....

I've been experiencing this issue and this solution seems to have fixed it, thanks!

There's a Windows 10 update fixit you can download from Microsoft that may fix that. There's also one built into the Win10 troubleshooter that tends to work less often, but is worth a shot.

Failing that, open up an admin command prompt and type
    Net stop wuauserv
    Net stop bits

Go to c:/windows/softwaredistribution and delete everything in the folder.
Go back to the command prompt and type
    Net start wuauserv
    Net start bits

Cross your fingers that updates start again. Last shot to get them working again usually is an in-place upgrade of Win10. Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and choose to create an ISO. Once it's done, mount the ISO and open a command prompt. Switch to the drive that was created when the ISO mounted and type
    Setup.exe /dynamicupdate disable /showoobe none /telemetry disable

As long as that installs ok, you should be good to go. Ideally it refreshes all the components in Windows during the process. If it fails, nuke it from orbit and start over.

I'm still getting this after a cold shutdown and Malwarebytes and Windows Defender are not flagging anything. Any ideas?

Disabling fast startup seems to have fixed it for me.

Have y'all updated your privacy settings? The latest Windows update is prompting people to update their privacy settings (I assume due to some Cortana integration). Mine stopped as soon as I updated the settings.

I got a similar popup on Win7 recently for taskeng.exe. I used an anti-malware tool just in case, but that did involve a reboot and that knocked it out. Seems to have cleared up one way or another.

One annoying thing that Windows 10 decided to do to my computer, sometime the last couple of mouths, was move my documents and some other folders to OneDrive. Completely ignoring my settings on where to save things and causing some game hijinx. I was able to fix it, following these instructions and then manually move everything back.

    It's an Office update:

Stupid question: a briefly appearing black Command prompt-style window that lasts a faction of a second is a normal part of Windows 10, right? Probably part of the update process? Or maybe some other legitimate program?

Recently they've popped up every so often--just for a fraction of a second. They don't seem to last long enough for any visible commands.

I ran a AV scan and Malwarebytes, out of paranoia.

I saw on Twitter this weekend that it is actually an Office update that did this.

Yeah I'm getting this too and malware stuff isn't finding anything.

    V weird.

it's most likely this. and instead of disabling the task, you can just set it to run once at login. for some reason, the task is set to run every hour. someone at Microsoft needs a stern talking to.
