If everyone didn't wait fucking 50 years to raise minimum wage it wouldn't have been a problem. If they just locked it to CoL and never touched it again everything would probably be hunky dory.

Nope they sat on $5 for practically 20 years, then were like "oh shit this is not feasible" and put it to $7. Then were like "no wait this is still not really good" and not they're scrambling to put it where it should be.

This also, which is why there needs to be a plan to ease businesses into paying CoL by region. Do it over 5 years, mandate cost of living from the federal level but have it be implemented on the local.

The national 15/hr campaign was kind of nuts, because that is poverty in NYC and while it definitely isn't great in Rolla, MO, you can do a hell of a lot more with it and it would murderkill a lot of the small businesses that Wal Mart somehow didn't manage to destroy.

another point to remember is that small business are an anomaly. They only exist either as temporary inefficiencies waiting to be "smoothed over" or because of rigorous government protection. The more free the markets are the more efficiently they produce monopolies that ruthlessly absorb or stamp out any smaller companies.

"you didn't build that" was a rare moment of truth-telling

Minor point of contention: or in niche industries.

if there's money to be made it's just a matter of time before there's a "period of consolidation"

a landscaping company's immediate competitors are a lawnmower or a stone garden, so it seems plausible that they might not be able to pass costs on customers successfully

That said, most people who pay for landscapers are people who make above the median, so they can be convinced to afford the uptick in cost if it doesn't hit them all at once.

I was thinking that most of a landscaping company's business would not be rich people with gardens large enough that they don't want to mow them, but public land, businesses, etc with a bunch of grass around

i mean the leftist in me says we obviously raise the minimum wage and restructure business taxes so that bigger companies with more profits pay more tax and small businesses pay less tax, so the wage costs are offset at least in part by tax breaks

I thought the municipality mowed the grass here by me but apparently it is regulated as outfields, meaning they care as much about mowing it as they do about mowing the high mountains

so it gets mowed by the people who live here who likes this area nice and neat, enough that they can be arsed to mow it

although I bet this model doesn't work for all that many plots

You guys familiar with that murderous jackass Sheriff Clarke? The one who wears all the bullshit badges / medals on his uniform?

I just read that he's mad at the Washington Post's in-depth analysis of each medal / pin. His defense? Proof that he wears those things. Uh, apparently he isn't aware of the primary photo circulating around of him wearing them.

This graph is ugly but this is the US wage.
    a-us-minimum-wage-1980-2012.png

This is just national minimum wage not state. Some states are well above others are just at this.

Problem is do to the differences in CoL a $12/h wage in say Arkansas can provide an okay life while in DC $12 an hour is a joke.

So, the province of Ontario will be raising the minimum wage to $15 over time.

"Yay!" say the people actually making minimum wage and trying to survive off it

"No!" say the people who have probably never worked a minimum wage job in their life and are deeply concerned that paying the serfs who live under them will raise the cost of the fast food they claim they don't even eat

I was going to reply but ronya did

it's going to approach 30% more expensive, not $5 more. Paying people to swing the shovels and push the lawnmowers is pretty much all of the cost.
