I think I actually don't feel the same way most do regarding alignment systems.
I mean, I think it's dumb to actually have serious gameplay concerns, in general (like, monks only able to be lawful? Not necessarily sensible, especially since one would imagine many Buddhist monks would be generally true neutral? I think, as a non-expert? Paladins it makes sense, I guess, though). So in the sense of gameplay concerns, I feel it should largely be irrelevant.
But I think it tells you more than people give it credit for. Good vs evil is obviously a super abstract thing, but it definitely tells you what kind of person someone is, if you just can roughly group them. Same with chaotic vs lawful - sure, the selection of that specifically is arbitrary, but it again tells you stuff about people - whether or not they're largely ideologically bound to or approving of rigid systems or not.
If you want to go down complex routes, you could use Haidt's research and construct a five dimensional alignment system based on purity, authority, group loyalty, fairness, and harm?
....but even then, you basically end up with purity, authority, and group loyalty being approximations of lawfulness and harm being good vs evil, so it doesn't seem too awful.

Commercial comes on the radio about watching out for motorcycles and the reason they get in so many accidents is because asshole car drivers don't look for them.
Immediately afterwards, a motorcycle goes by me doing about 70 in a 45 mph zone.
and there you were focusing your eyes on the radio
but fun! and I think it's just a great exercise to try to turn complex things into simple systems. Chaotic neutral frictionless point sphere!
I'm also sort of confused as to why people are making all these meta comments about the undesireability of discussing alignment in chat, when clearly some people are enjoying the discussion and no one's getting heated, offensive, or offended? I guess it's boring/lame, is that the problem? Well whatever, I know my interests are lame ;_; Gonna chat about them anyway though...
Because history is why
Because chat is full of crotchety old RPG coots who have been playing RPG for 20+ years and cannot conceive of an original hot take on the subject of the nine D&D alignments, and have seen every conceivable permutation of this particular discussion turn a thread into an angry cesspit of hurt feelings and insulted worldviews especially when a simplified game system is applied to real life and real people.
So many of us reflexively respond with "oh no not this shit again". Its the tipping debate of RPG nerd bullshit (which is why a meta joke was made about alignments and tipping and bravo for that)
And while you might think it's fun to turn complex things into simple systems, maybe other people aren't huge fans of that.
@firewaterword my* pops sent me a facebook message (because he's all up on messenger like a monster): "Got the BBQ book - Thank you. Looks like a lot of good recipes"
So initial success and we'll see if it's a paperweight or something next time I visit.

So is this response being driven by a lawful neutral alignment, or
If you don't like law / chaos you'll have to build a time machine so you can go cry to Michael Moorcock back in the 1960s

Another funny thing about the Navy: Piracy is rampant on just about every vessel. There's always at least one media server loaded down with pirated videos, music, and books. I was once on one that had a lan line going to every bed for easier downloads.

hm
the only negativity I'm seeing here really is the meta discussion though, so perhaps the constituency of chat is different enough that it's not going to cause issues
and if the issue is finding it boring, that's fine; I pretty much only post boring shit because, well, I'm a defense contractor who plays videogames as my sole hobby; I am not very interesting.
A lot of people like game design, which is about creating systems that are sometimes meant to be representative of complex things, although sometimes just vaguely evocative of them, but regardless suggests a level of interest in system design.

I think alignments are funny but mostly in the context of how players fail to hold to them
It might be more interesting if it was a hidden value the dm assigns based on their behavior throughout a campaign and then applies stuff like axiomatic strike or protection against good accordingly
So makin it entirely dependent on the player's roleplaying and not something the player just wrote down
