I take a professional interest in these apologies and we're about three apologies past where "We should have listened and communicated better, we're sorry" is cliche and should be excised. Pretty sure I used it some time last year! Ahead of the curve, that's me.

honestly i'm really looking forward to when "We're listening" falls out of corporate vernacular

    Yep.

Youtube, Twitter, Bungie, Activision, EA, Blizzard, they all say that boilerplate "We're listening to your feedback" line and never do shit.

The thing that gets me is they say "we need to communicate better" in a message that communicates nothing of importance. If you need to communicate better, no time like the present to start!

YouTube finally responds to the Logan Paul fiasco:

An open letter to our community:

Many of you have been frustrated with our lack of communication recently. You’re right to be. You deserve to know what's going on.

Like many others, we were upset by the video that was shared last week.

Suicide is not a joke, nor should it ever be a driving force for views. As Anna Akana put it perfectly: "That body was a person someone loved. You do not walk into a suicide forest with a camera and claim mental health awareness."

We expect more of the creators who build their community on @YouTube, as we’re sure you do too. The channel violated our community guidelines, we acted accordingly, and we are looking at further consequences.

It’s taken us a long time to respond, but we’ve been listening to everything you’ve been saying. We know that the actions of one creator can affect the entire community, so we’ll have more to share soon on steps we’re taking to ensure a video like this is never circulated again.

What's telling is what's missing. YouTube talks about acting, but doesn't say what they did. This statement feels like you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.

"this dude makes us hundreds of thousands of dollars per year so we're gonna send him an email saying 'hey don't do that' and then forget this ever happened" would just result in more backlash, so they can't be open and honest about it. Hence the vagueness.

Some actual details on YouTube's respond to l'affaire Paul:
The company announced today that it will not move forward with a planned YouTube Red movie that Paul was supposed to star in. The Thinning: New World Order was supposed to be the sequel to Paul’s 2016 YouTube Red movie, The Thinning. A YouTube representative also confirmed to Polygon he is removed from Google’s top tier preferred ad program.

“In light of recent events, we have decided to remove Logan Paul’s channels from Google Preferred,” a YouTube representative said. Additionally, we will not feature Logan in season 4 of ‘Foursome’ and his new Originals are on hold.

Why couldn't they have said this in their release?

YouTube's in a pretty decent spot. Everyone hates them but they're unambiguously the best game in town, so it's lip service for days any time some shit goes down. Watching that video a few pages back about the weird fucking procedurally generated hellscape that is Toddler YouTube made it abundantly clear that YouTube's executive leadership straight up doesn't give a rat's dick about making YouTube a better platform.

Why would they? They have the might of Alphabet behind them, so nobody can really compete.

Since that Foldable video went up that YouTube network and all the videos and accounts associated with it were banned. So, they at least did something when some more reputable YouTubers made enough of a stink. I don't expect them to ever do anything on their own, though, and neither should anyone else.

Actually, after that Foldable video went up, the tools that are used to track related MCNs have been disabled by YouTube. The old "socal" tab was also removed. Not to say the was a cause an effect, or a conspiracy but that's strange that the tools Mr. Foldable used in order to track the MCNs are not longer there....

Here is a Reddit thread on the matter.

it wasn't solely due to foldable, but it was absolutely in response to being called out by several channels, not to mention the mainstream press

I actually read through that thread, it's very short. The social tag information that Socialblade used was removed in September according to that thread. The Foldable video was in November, so was the Medium article the video was based on. They also gave several reasons in that Reddit thread why YouTube would have removed the function specifically for the purpose of combating MCNs that were using that same data to feed their algorithms.
There is no way that YouTube removed a function in September to spite a video and article that were made in November of the same year.

oh yeah dan olson himself said that it was a long time coming for a lot of reasons, and it wasn't his video that did it, he just released a video around the same time

it's still youtube covering up some real shitty practices that they don't care about having on their platform, it's just not covering up in response to him

Anime trailers are so inscrutable to me. I'm gonna give it a shot though:

She's a robot that... writes letters for people by feeling their feelings? Story centers around her feeling the feelings of a woman who fell in love with a major. Now the automaton wants to feel feelings of her own.

Also I'm betting both the major and the girl are long dead.

    Nailed it.

This is you know, probably good, he said without much enthusiasm.

It shows that the top rungs of Youtube are potentially out of reach if you become too unpleasant. However, it's worth noting that none of his previous behaviour was counted as "too unpleasant" and the amount of money and acclaim you can achieve before hitting these barriers is still "a lot of money and acclaim".

Yeah, this seemed to happen less because Youtube had a problem with his actual behavior, and more because that there was finally substantial public outcry that forced them to re-evaluate how much he was worth to them.
