So this was finally confirmed? Heard about it yesterday afternoon, then on the drive home they said it was misreported (that he had not been removed from life support).
Yeah. He passed away surrounded by his family and band.
Another thing about him was that he worked very hard to reform the music industry. He wanted to be sure artists were getting paid fairly instead of men wearing suits who had nothing to do with the art. His concerts were always relatively inexpensive to attend. We needed more of him.
Tom Petty will forever be intertwined with the death of my father-in-law in one of the most emotionally draining times of my life. His music is important, entertaining, and supremely sad for various personal reasons. I don't know that any celebrity death has or will have the kind impact this one is having on me.
I enjoyed Tom Petty well before I seriously got into music and continued to appreciate him long after I built up my collection of mostly metal. I was pretty sad when this news hit yesterday, then hopeful when it was retracted, and sad once again when I saw it confirmed in the evening.
"Running Down a Dream" is probably my favorite song by him, but I admit that my knowledge of his music is quite limited. All I own is a Greatest Hits album with the Heartbreakers and Wildflowers from his solo stuff.
I remember reading an interview a few months ago with him that he was planning on winding down the touring because he wanted to spend more time with his granddaughter.

Man, this sucks. He was one of the sounds of my childhood. My own tastes diverged from that kind of laconic folksy sound but it was always kind of comforting to me to know he was out there still making music and being by all accounts a pretty nice guy who never, so far as I know, had some giant scandal or racist tirade or whatever. He seemed like a real American independent in the absolute best sense of that term and he is gone way too soon.

This is a pretty big bummer. I've always wanted to see him live, but since he just kept touring and all, I always figured I'd have plenty of time to make it happen. Yet another tough learning opportunity I suppose.
One memory that always comes up for me is driving home from a ski weekend in Tahoe with a friend about a decade or more ago. We ended up driving a friend's car back home for some reason, and on the way, we got caught in a huge blizzard coming over Donner pass. What's normally a 3ish hour drive turned into an 11+ hour one, and the only CDs in the car were the 2 disc Tom Petty anthology Through the Years (and a copy of Oingo Boingo's Alive that was scratched to shit).
I think we went through those two discs at least half a dozen times each, and it's a testament to how musically awesome this man was that we never got sick of those songs.

I was never a huge Petty fan, but there were definitely some songs of his I loved. Still, he always seemed like an immensely creative person, and his death is a huge loss to the world.

Vegas didn't personally affect me but Tom Petty dying does. He was one of the sounds of my childhood.
