IT departments (mostly called infrastructure teams) at Spotify are amazing. It constantly feels like they are helping devs to be more productive, solving problems and actively providing value rather than just retreating into their server closets and setting storage limits or w/e
this is unbelievable! How do they achieve that
They're just really focused on actual dev-ops and cutting edge technology. Their mission is to empower devs and not to cater to execs' email trubs or w/e. I just had a meeting with some infrastructure team in NYC who volunteered to run an experiment on one of our deploy pipelines, to make it faster, more powerful, reliable and requiring less dev attention. The dude said he'd set it all up, maintain it, and be available for any problems or questions. It was the most un-IT experience I've ever had.

Hrm. Job offering a holiday savings club. You pay in each month and then next year they give you back your money with interest! 1% interest.
They list some examples here. If you deduct 454.56 from your paycheck every month, after it ends you'll have 5000.00 in the bank. According to this, your check with interest would be...5025.00. I'm a little confused as to how that ends up as 1% interest but assuming my math is just bad, that still doesn't seem particularly worth it? Like, are they just doing this so they can make the interest on our money and pay us a tiny amount back? I'm confused as to what the point of this is.
life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws
fuck up once and you break your thumb / if you're happy at all then you're god damn dumb
that's right we're on a fucked up cruise / God is dead but at least we have booze
bad things happen, no one knows why / the sun burns out and everyone dies

turns out:
IT can be good if you pay them well, let them be actual employees and not contractors, don't hamper the fuck out of their budget, management sees them as more than begrudgingly paid cost, etc
IT is a productivity multiplier.
not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

So the other night I was half-sick and in a nostalgic mood on Youtube and was digging the old Taxi intro, which always used to make young me feel really wistful and kind of sad even though I was 4 and couldn't possibly know what those emotions meant:
and it turns out that that tune wasn't recorded for the show but is named "Angela" and was composed by modern jazz artist Bob James. The "Taxi" producers' original choice for the theme was the same-titled first cut off of his 1978 album Touchdown:
and obviously the producers made the right call going with "Angela" instead, but "Touchdown" is a great tune and I ended up listening to the whole album that night and I guess now I am kind of into modern jazz artist Bob James, I guess? Also it turns out he is one of the most frequently-sampled musicians in history. See if you recognize this one:

A lot of it is custom stuff developed in-house but the basic stack is java in a docker on Linux google cloud vm's with Cassandra backing stores. Most everyone develops on a mbp, google email, we're given free license to use whatever tools we need but most ppl use intellij IDE.
