FUCK THAT he was a lil bitch his last season he hasnt earned the honor of having his number retired

    I'm mixed

Because he was a huge part of the franchise taking hold and surviving in its early years, but at the same time, his greatness was really rather brief and he didn't get us anywhere

And as a Leafs fan I'm pretty strict about retiring numbers anyway

You don't just put anyone up in the rafters

the western fan preference for official endorsement of a narrative runs counter to the seemingly asian ecumenical embrace of competing character concepts innit

obviously this can be rationalised, cf comic multiverses, but the desire to crown an official narrative seems perennial and persistent

is it a business model thing - relative kinds of revenue as shaped by tax, corporate, and IP laws - or is it a cultural thing

    ronya

Probably all of the above, honestly -- business structures in Japan, for example, are leaning increasingly toward what are called "production committees", which are conglomerates of multiple distinct corporations for the purpose of creating and promoting a single media text. This is how a lot of anime is made these days; the funding for the project will be jointly provided by multiple companies with different specialities (for example, the media franchise I looked at was initially funded by seven companies, including a book publisher, a toy manufacturor, a broadcast company, an animation studio, an advertising firm, etc), who band together for the duration of the project in question, each with their own voice and stake in the success of the IP.

This has then contributed to a media culture which explicitly encourages the existence of multiple perspectives and articulations of the "same" fictional elements, none of which are privileged above the other outside of the individual imagination's process of selecting and isolating what they want to be "true"

The business and cultural models are also historically pretty different between Japan and "the West" in terms of recognition of fan culture and unofficial use of IP, as well.

how do they limit media satiation

or maybe they don't, which explains the relatively short lifespans of most IPs

I'm guessing Nintendo keeps relatively tight control over Pokémon

The tight control over Pokemon is one of the exceptions to the general tone of media in that regional space, yeah. They've overtly restricted fan-articulations of the IP in a way that's definitely more consistent with "Western" approaches to ownership. But even so, if you look at Pokemon what you mostly see is a multiplicity of articulations of a set of common affective elements outside a singular, ontological perspective on how these things belong

Media satiation in this space is less about limiting and more throwing a lot of stuff out there (a huge increase of which emerged in the late-1990s as technologies and distributions changed) and seeing what sticks; the vast majority of IP are barely profitable, and rely on a small base of dedicated fans to push them into the black.

I really loved In Bruges but years of comic reading have left me somewhat gunshy about UK/Irish writers/artists/filmmakers' hot takes on middle America. Regardless of how talented they are - and there's no denying that Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Garth Ennis et al are talented - it often feels like watching someone paint something they've never actually seen, but only had described to them second-hand.

But, like I said, I loved In Bruges and I love Frances McDormand so I would like to hear that the movie is good.

Nah, I just started off with 2 the other day because I hadn't looked at it since I beat it nearly 30 years ago and I remembered very little about it. I liked it enough to finish again, so I thought I'd move on to 3, which I owned on NES and got pretty far into but never finished. I kind of want to settle that old score. I don't really have a strong attachment to the idea of the series as a whole, though, partly because as the installments get more modern the graphics get better which means everything looks more like Akira Torayama's art, which has never done anything for me.

Other launch providers too, sometimes! >_>

They're just worse about a) providing clear schedules and / or b) launching, period

ULA with their staggering eight launches this year, or the ESA with 9 (although I do love both of their launch vehicles, and I'm excited for the next generation too!)

Really if I could get better (and English) livestreams of Russian and Chinese launches, those would be fun to cover

Soyuz still does the Korolev Cross and everything!

i promise to talk about a bunch of stuff i like but first, i need to get this out:

    (warning: stuff about suicide)
my roommate has been sleeping with a girl- sort of dating, i guess they haven't decided. she is a perfect blonde cheerleader type. funnily enough, she is the girl from the 'sorry, i don't find you physically attractive' story. do you remember that EM? he ended up moving in with me and now they're smanging! times change.

so, she is an extremely heavy drinker. she's come over half a dozen times now or so, and every time she's drunk to extreme excess. not only loud and shrieky (when i live in an apartment) but also sometimes belligerent to him, and also she'd get so drunk she'd stumble around topless, she'd throw up etc. so he comes to me basically, let me know if she's too much. the first couple times i was like eh, i don't like binge drinking but as long as the volume is controlled it's not a huge deal to me? if i bring a girl over i wanna be able to have loud sex so fine roommate, just try to keep it somewhat under control. and to my roommate's credit, he has tried. he tries to have her drink less, he shh's her constantly, he never is an active participant when she wants to scream at him. but eventually it happened frequently enough (literally every time she was over) that last night i tell him yeah, i've hit my limit. i don't want a screamy, barely-conscious girl passing out naked in her vomit in my apartment. good timing, as i also learn she has been suicidal in the past. whatever my own struggles, i don't want someone in crisis in my home unless they're me :P

so my roommate goes yeah i get it, no problem. i'm probably gonna break things off because i can't handle it anymore either. we leave it at that and i go to sleep thinking- hmm maybe they'll still be friends, i don't mind if she comes over occasionally so long as she isn't drinking etc. we'll talk about it tomorrow.

i just got home from work and found out after i went to sleep she swallowed a bottle of pills. he freaked out and took her to the hospital with her screaming NO JUST TAKE ME HOME SO I CAN DIE IN MY BED. he gets her to the hospital and i guess due to her prior experiences with psychiatric inpatient stuff, she literally sprinted away and the cops had to go get her. pumped her stomach. my roommate-
really just her fuck buddy, having recently decided to break it off, but trying to be a friend- has never been through anything like this. he hasn't even had to hold anyone's hair, he's not a party bro at all.
never been with anyone in crisis. he's trying to figure out how to contact her family (whose contact information he doesn't have) while she refuses to unlock her phone because she doesn't want her family to know. she lives with her family and has no car so he was at the hospital, practically hostage half the morning. called out of work for the first time in his life.

my thoughts are primarily with her of course, but i can't help but be proud of my roommate. from refusing to have sex with her when she's drinking heavily to handling all this on his own i am like, gj bruh.

    sad stuff.

Retiring numbers isn't just for gods it's for players who meant a lot to your franchise and more importantly fanbase

I mean I guess the raptors can keep holding out for that mythical great player they've always heard about or they can show some love to the guy who brought relevance to their franchise for the first time
