Every year since 2004
@mcc has done a fantastic Game of the Year poll on this forum, the last couple of years a few of us have taken over the running of this, still using the same scripts MCC wrote (and by and large the same OP!). I've been given a prod this year and asked if we're doing it again. Christmas has been a little crazy with a four year old so it completely slipped my mind, but here it is, better late than never. Massive thanks to
@infidel yet again for hosting.
There are a lot of Game of the Year polls out there, but this one is special. Where most GOTY polls just give you a list of maybe five of the best-selling games from the last year, and ask you to choose your favorite, THIS poll gives you a list of EVERY game that came out in the last year (more or less) and asks you to vote for [up to] your top 20-- ranked by how much you liked them. Here's last year's poll if you want to see how this works. We actually wind up with a serviceable ranking of the top hundred or so games from the last year, with blockbusters, obscurities and cult hits mixed in side by side, and a pretty color-coded graph.
Here's the plan: We're taking nominations in this thread until the evening of January 20th. This gives people two weeks to nominate games. Not as long as usual, but we're a bit late. Happy to extend if people feel it necessary.
We'll then run the poll for one week, or however long the community decides.
So, let's get some nominations. Remember, the point of this is to have the most comprehensive list of games possible! So any game that anyone might POSSIBLY put in their top 20 deserves to go on the list.
The rules for nomination are:
* It must have been legally released IN AMERICA for the first time in 2017
* It must be a new game-- no ports, no expansion packs.
We can try to be flexible about these rules. But here's the underlying point of the rules: Every game gets one shot. Think about it, if this game you like got on one year, and then we snuck its expansion pack on the next year… half the people who liked it will vote one year and half the other and it will get really low scores. You like this game, but it's gonna get stiffed in the poll. Avoid that.
This list has come from Wikipedia, so there's likely an awful lot that doesn't meet 'our rules', so please feel free to point them out and I'll get rid, as well as any potential duplicates. I've done a fair bit of pruning to remove duplicate games and platforms but I'll be honest and say I haven't had a load of time to be as thorough as I'd like.
Working nominations list in next post. Also last year we had some discussions about episodic content, when should something be added to the list. I THINK the consensus was that it should go in the year where the final episode is released. Again, rules are flexible, this is meant to be fun not something to fight over.
One final point - we normally say early access games are exempt (Say PUBG). I know a number of other polls now include them, the idea behind this being that by the time they actually "release" they've already started to lose their popularity. As such I'm open to including early access games if others are. Let's just stick with the 'this is supposed to be for fun' rule.

This is why I think we possibly need to alter that rule, the landscape of gaming has changed a bit. PUBG would have been in any way given it released in December but I'm sure there are other games that would miss their window, and by the time they 'properly' release their popularity has dropped.

Duplicates:
Tokyo Xanadu (PSVITA)
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ (PS4, PC)
eX+ is a rerelease with a bit of bonus content and a minor translation update. It's functionally the same game, and should probably be merged. Also, it seems like nobody played the Vita release over the summer anyway.
I don't know:
Yakuza Kiwami (PS4) - remake
Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4) - remake
I assume these should stay, but I haven't played either them or the originals. Someone more familiar should make a call. Thinking about it, I'm also not sure if the second has released outside Japan.
Stuff to add:
Battle Chef Brigade (PC, NS)
Aztez (PC)
Rivals of Aether (PC, XBO)
Tokyo Dark (PC)
Should we add AM2R (PC)? It was a weird thing and apparently kind of a cool thing. Before the legal action.
2016 release. Was on the poll last year. And on my list, in fact.
It left early access a few weeks ago. It's a big boy release now, and should absolutely be on the list.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Given that this is the community list, does anyone want to make cases for Mario Kart 8: Deluxe or Skyrim PSVR? Could it be argued that each adds enough to justify a place on the list?
I know I'd vote for MK8 if it were on, but equally it being on there breaks one of our rules
And I haven't played Skyrim PSVR but I do know from experience that a full scale VR port is an entirely different experience. Is that enough to justify it being re-added?
Google Sheet has been added, everyone should be able to edit (let's see how that goes :surprised: ) - if you DO edit the sheet then please still post in the thread what's been altered for discussion.

Maybe if you can buy a game for the first time in a year, it's eligible for that year.
Added:
Dream Daddy
Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!!
Questionable:
Full Throttle Remastered. Do we usually include remasters?
Night Trap is also a remaster. It has some different modes I think and some making-of videos.
Windjammers is a port of the neo geo game from 1994.
Voodoo Vince Remastered is also a remaster.
Deleted:
Secret World Legends is, as far as I know, the full F2P release of Secret World.
To The Moon was released on mobile this year but came out on PC back in 2011.
WWE 2k17 was a delayed PC release.
Zero Escape the Nonary Games is a collection of the three games in the series repackaged into one.
Vikings - Wolves of Midgard stands as a request to add though. No one's going to vote for it but me but I loved it.
Deleted:
Yakuza Kiwami 2 was a 2017 release in Japan only, not the US.
Chroma Squad is a port, it was released on PC in 2015.
Dead Rising 4: Frank's Big Package is a GOTY-type collection of Dead Rising for for PS4.
Sorcer Striker is an arcade port for PS4.
Lego City Undercover came out for WiiU in 2013.
Just Dance 2017 was a late release of last year's game for Switch.
Wipeout Omega Collection is a collection of older games for PS4.
Disney Afternoon Collection is just a collection of NES-era games for modern platforms.
For me it depends how much it differs from the flat version. Skyrim and Fallout 4 are the same games only in VR, but Doom VFR and (I think) L.A. Noire differ substantially. I haven't played either, though.
Speaking of VR, the following need to be added:
From Other Suns
Witchblood
I'm on the fence if Coco VR should be included since even by PA Forum standards it might not be considered a "game".
The Solus Project was originally released in 2016, the console version is a port.
Also, are PC and PCVR supposed to be two different categories? If so, (at least) Robo Recall and Lone Echo need to be in the PCVR category.

I'm not sure if the Battle Royale part is still considered "early access" but the PvE part is. Since they're pretty much two distinct games maybe the BR version could be listed this year.
Kiwami is pretty much a remaster with a bit of added content.

Ys VIII - Removed the PC version. It was delayed for the retranslation and has no release date.
Isn't MK8 just a straight port of the WiiU release with bundled DLC? Granted a lot more people played it this time around, but I don't think there's a case to be made there.
With Skyrim VR (and FO4 VR if that's out yet) I lean towards it being a port. It's not like SUPERHOT VR, which was its own thing with its own unique content. I can see the case for it, though, if someone wants to push for it.
I know that there's new stuff in there. It should probably stay, unless you guys want to split out whatever the individual new release in there is.
I'm fine with it, but we're probably going to have to keep a record of what early access games go in that we can easily refer to next year. One shot and all.
All of these should be removed.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
As awesome as it is, it is essentially a definitive edition.
How much of a precedent is there for two versions of the same game? Fortnite Battle Royale and Fortnite Save the World are both reached through the same launcher. They're completely different games, in the same engine. One of which is available FTP, the other you have to purchase. I would hate for Battle Royale to eliminate the PVE version from contention in 2018, but I would hate for Battle Royale to be skipped altogether.
PSN: Dyvion -- Eternal: Dyvion+9393 -- Genshin Impact: Dyvion
Same for Skyrim VR. Doom VFR however is a pretty different thing and probably should be on the list, right? More in line with Superhot VR?
On Yakuza Kiwami, that's just a remaster. I think very few "remakes" will ever count. Like, I think the upcoming Shadow of the Colossus "remake" should not count, but that FFVII thing probably should when it comes out.
I think Dead Cells is one that should be on this list from early access, but I'm shaky on that because I didn't get to play it.
I think Fortnite goes on the list as one, this year. There was a "disc" version (but it turns out this doesn't give you access to play the game...it comes with a code for the founder's pack or whatever...I found this out by borrowing it from the library and not being able to play the PvE). Still, you could purchase a version of it in stores. On top of that, BR is basically a full-fledged "product" (at least as much as PUBG was for most of the year) and I had coworkers talking about how their kids were getting into it.
Also, are there any Telltale games this year where not all of the episodes are out? I don't think there are.
This is a clickable link to my Steam Profile.
Probably not the same case but I think last year Frog Fractions 2 was separated out from the game that it was hidden in.
Also I think cutting Mario Kart makes sense. If it had new maps it might sway me, but it didn't change the game that much from what was on the WiiU
It wasn’t simply a rebranding or rerelease of the old game.

Pretty sure they both came out in 2017. Also the first one affected me deeply so I wanna vote for it.

Dreamfall Chapters is a port/complete release, deleted.
I think Echo Arena (PCVR) should be a separate entry from Lone Echo, since it is free and you can get it as a standalone...which makes me waffle a bit on Fortnite/BR.
GNOG is not PSVR exclusive. It is also just playable in 2D on PS4 and Mobile, and soon on PC.
Gorogoa is also on Mobile.
I deleted Night Trap.
How do we feel about Picross e8? We didn't have e7 on last year's list, and while they're little more than content packs, they are fully standalone.
I don't remember what we have done with the Pokemon re-releases in past years, but I lean toward cutting Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.
Same for Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World.
Portal Knights also released for PC, PS4, and XBO...added.
Psychonauts is PSVR.
Man I hope someone votes for Star Fox 2 so that we can have a "SNES GOTY" award.

Edith Finch came to XBO later, added.
Deleted Windjammers.
Zero Escape is just a reissue/port of all three games, deleted.
