    Challenges Announced!
This Weekend YOU, yes YOU have 60mins too....
    CHOOSE NORMAL DIFFICULTY IN OPTIONS!

    1) 3 Live Run* - How far can you get on 3 lives? This should be your first challenge after turning the game on. How far can you get? This part should only take a few minutes. Ten tops :).

    2) Mission 1: Top Score Challenge. Whats the highest score you can get for the whole of Mission 1.

    3) 5 Credit run. To ensure all versions can play this challenge - you have 5 credits (of 3 lives each) to get as far as you can. If you complete it within 5 credits then a) your amazing and b) well rate it by how many credits/lives you have left.

*This is more a novelty run. I suspect it will be mainly things like. "Barely past the first screen" "End of Level Boss" and so on. And a place for the hardcore to shine. 2) and 3) are the more serious challenges - though in principle you could win both 1) and 3) in the same go if you made it too the end...

Seriously the Metal Slug series is a masterpiece of Pixel art. It's beautiful. And it's more fun than going on an adventure through time with Bill and Ted to fill your phone booth with multiple Scarlet Johansons from throughout time and space then letting nature take it's course...
By which I mean have sex with them all.
    But not Bill and Ted.
    Well not Ted

It's a 2D beautiful shoot fest. It's well worth picking up the anthologies on Wii/PS2/PSP though they all have some flaws with loading/menus etc. But the games themselves are fine I'm told. If you can't afford that you can get a wriggle on and buy just the third game for <£5.

    Metal Slug 3 from £1.95 2nd Hand - PS2
From £2.50 2nd hand for Xbox

If people don't get the game delivered till monday or whatever. let me know and I'll run the competition till wednesday.

I've been wanting to buy the Wii Metal Slug Anthology for a while now. This gives me an excuse. I have only played a bit of the Metal Slugs on neo geo pocket color. I will totally suck at this but I'm joining anyway.

Also I've got Super Mario Land and Another World (Out of this world here) so I should be good for a while.

    £20 is a steal! Bought!

    (Even though I have 1 and 3)

It's going to be interesting comparing the Wii's metal slug 3 to the Xbox's stand alone 3. I wonder if it keeps the special features. Fat island and so on? 'cos their worth the £2.50 I paid for the Xbox version on their own.

this whole thing is a great idea, much appreciation here. i'm stoked to try out the MS3 challenges. are the results just honor-system, or do we take pics?

Screen grabs/Pics are fun - we don't ask how people achieved such pics - it is assumed they used a tv capture card.

A camera pic of your tv screen is fun too.

But this is an honour system. You can just state them if you forget and/or too lazy.

As LewieP and ben0207 maybe offering prizes (because they are awesome) anyone who fakes it for gain are cunts. But I'm sure PA is above that. And they could always limit it to pic entries.

I bought Metal Slug Anthology from that site on LewieP's blog as well, but they will only deliver to your card address for the first two orders, and I live at Uni right now.

It's not like I need it for tomorrow, because I already have MS3 ready to go.

We can't stop you practicing and not telling us but 'Zero to Gold' was pretty much the aim of the game.

In fact were I in charge of things (which I'm not) I'd suggest a ban on playing the game of the week from the moment it is announced until you start that 1 hr count down.

Hell, I'll be starting my hour straight off when MS3 arrives and my sum experience with the series is playing once on an arcade machine in Italy when I was twelve (I am now 24). I don't even know which entry in the series it was!

Oh god. That was the most retarded thing ever. Honestly, if we'd played Metal Slug 1, I would have done better, but I've played Metal Slug 3 about once before in my life and it's harder than MS1. I did terribly.

3 Life Challenge - On the first level, I got to the forest, and onto the boat that floats slowly along the river. I ran out of my 3 lives there.

5 Credits - Into the water in the submarine and to the part where 2 boats start attacking you with balls of light that fly towards you slowly. I ran out of my 5 credits there.

High Score on First Level - 41595

The 3 Life Challenge was a separate run and I ended up going a different route for the 5 credits run (I got into the optional submarine and went underwater). Because I ended up wasting all 5 of my credits on the first level (:() I counted that as my highscore for that level.

I wasn't sure if we were meant to have a single go at each challenge and stop, or take as many goes as we could within the 60 minutes (it wasn't a problem for Sonic, one playthrough took the full time). As such, I'll list my three runs separately:

    First attempt (about 15 minutes):

    3 LIFE RUN - L1 - got to the first 'bus-type thing'.
    FIRST LEVEL SCORE - 92943
5 CREDIT RUN - 1st phase of the L2 boss.

    Second attempt (about 18 minutes)

3 LIFE RUN - L1 - took a different route, got to the final enemy in the upwards bit of the water tunnel.
FIRST LEVEL SCORE - 140172 (got a 50,000 point random drop off a prisoner)
5 CREDIT RUN - The second 'wall' in L3.

    Third attempt (about 20 minutes)

3 LIFE RUN - L2(!) - the fleet of five 'copters, the first being red.
    FIRST LEVEL SCORE - 336970 (didn't lose a life)
5 CREDIT RUN - L3 again, but took a different route. Ended up in a sort of factory area with lifts and soldiers with shields.

Mission 1 Score Challenge: 418360 That picture is right when mission 2 starts cause I had to run and grab the camera.
3 Life run: Made it to the 6 alien guys and managed to kill one before my first continue
5 Credit Run: Somewhere in the warehouse of Mission 3, made it up a few elevators but got fucked by the jumping guys with swords and the bazooka guys that hide behind their friends with shields

Human weapons don't kill you as a zombie only thing that kills you as a zombie is the same things that turns you into a zombie.

Level 1 score: 658540 (I know that level like the back of my hand)
    metal3.jpg

3 Life run: Up to the boss of level 3. I however missed some crucial equipment right before the boss and went into the fight with only a pistol D:
    metal2.jpg
(although that pic is a little bit after the first continue, I was a little distracted with the boss to take a pic in the middle of it. :P)

5 credit run: Up to the level 4 boss. I screwed up badly at the start of the level, made it through the second part of the level ok and then got annihilated by the boss. God I hate that boss.
    metal1.jpg
(note. I may have used a continue too many, I'm not sure. If I did it made no difference I wasted so many on that stupid boss)

The high score on level 1 was a seperate run from the other two. I just blazed through lvl 1 & 2 on the 3 life/5 credit run. Hence the lower score in those shots in case you were wondering.

I got throughlly trashed by that game.

    1. Could only make it halfway across the bridge in the first level on 3 guys. Tried a few times.

    2. 64333 for mission one. (My fiancee got 89959 somehow.)

    3. To the boss after the 5 alien bosses at the end of mission 2. Couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do there.

So in conclusion. I suck at a game I've never played before. But I have faith in next week.

As I kind of messed up the advanced notice about this game - I'll keep the competition open till you've had a chance to get a go. I might draw up a table - but don't worry anyone who bought a copy to take part will get their attempts counted.

Also Jam's right: NO PRACTICING - I thought this was kind of obvious, theres no point doing a 60 min challenge if you've practised for 4 hours before hand. Of course people who played the game in the past will have a huge advantage, but I think thats part of the fun. Once a game has been announced you shouldn't play it till you take the challenge - I really like the idea of going back to games I haven't played for a decade, and seeing how much I can remember.

From Sonic the answer seems to be - a scarily large amount.

    Lave's Results

(I left my camera at work - so no photos, sorry)

    1) 3 Lives Run: I'm really happy with this. I managed to get to the second level boss (the six aliens) and take one of them down too. After that I started hemorrhaging lives like their was no tomorrow though.

    2) Mission 1: Top Score Challenge. Again I thought I had this in the bag (till I saw -SPI- at least) 445,950.

The score for this really separates the beginners from the more experienced. So don't feel to bad. You get like 50,000 points or something per prisoner you rescue (without dieing) at the end of the level.

    3) 5 Credit run. 3rd level - the part with you going up the opposite lifts and get troops above and below you. I had to pump about two more credits into the second level boss, and then the cameras and lasers on the third level just wiped me out. Total score - 696,304.[/b]

I had a few minutes left so tried level one again - and managed 310,361.

@mattclem - it's fine you can spend your 60 mins trying again and again on the challenges so I'll take your best score.

Hope people liked this. I loved it. But on reflection - I forgot how hard it was. Sorry if it was too hard to be fun for anyone (you wimps).

Yeah, the practice thing is a good idea to have a rule set down on. I played a little bit earlier this week, but I had been playing the game fairly intensely earlier in the month trying to do a 1 life run (something I've been trying at for a long time now and attempt every few months) so I had somewhat of an unfair advantage. It will be much more fun to go in relatively fresh in future.

Yes. I need to make a TL:DR rules guide and bang it in the first post.

But yeah - no practicing. I'm going to get destroyed this weekend at Super Mario Land - but I'm not worried.

Still, I had a blast this weekend. Got most of sunday off, and once I got back from my girlfriends I spent the afternoon with Outrun 2006, Rhythm Tengoku and Metal Slug.

Sure there was no "Plot" and whatever. But I've never had such fun condensed into such a small amount of time. Superb.

    RRRRRRROOOoooC---KET--- LaunchERR!

Also - certain events have come to my attention which means "Mystery Week 4 Game" will be happening.

I'll announce it as soon as have time to put together a little post. I hoping people will agree with my choice.

What the heck... I got such a low score??

    1. 3 lives run:
Made it to the pair of helicopters in Mission 2. The first group of 5 or so helis I killed with the Enemy Chaser weapon.

    2. Mission 1: Top Score Challenge
    352830
And I even got all the hostages and didn't die once in Mission 1 :(

    3. 5 Credit Run:
Mission 3... got out of the water, and went up two floors or so. Final score: A bit less than 780684
