Dude with a weird personality is in an industry based on personality; is successful.
Funny how that works out.
Eh, if that was what did it, there'd be a lot more successful people in that industry.
Well it's not like he just showed up on Giant Bomb's doorstep and said "look at how quirky I am!"
He was certainly lucky to be able to go to a college where he could both achieve his degree and work on furthering his career at the same time, and happened to be entering the industry at a time when it was much less crowded and focused on skills that Dan happened to posses, but he's also put some amount of effort into meetings his goals
Yeah, Dan's not really broken it down I think in one big chunk, but having watched the Million Dollar Abby 2 and rewatched a bunch of Metal Gear Scanlon lately, Dan put a lot more work in then people like to give him credit for (including himself). He got stupid lucky with graduating because his professor decided to accept a bunch of his free time work as class work, but that work was scripting, filming, and editing a bunch of power hour videos that he managed to sell to other students on campus. During that time he also wrote a shit ton of reviews for video game websites as a freelance worker, and did a bunch of networking for years to land his Game Informer gig. Some of that was happenstance, some of it was dumb luck (really him filming that Game Informer MGS2 video got his foot in the door with Gamestop more than it should), part of it was him doing a lot of work, and part of it was doing stuff to make himself memorable (renting a shark costume and chasing people around with it at one E3 I believe when he was younger as an example).
Dan is absolutely a very privileged, lucky dude at times. He is the first to admit that, and is why he has admitted that he doesn't really have much useful advice for other people looking into the industry, because he understands how unique his circumstances were. His luck into getting into the business isn't much different than Alex's either, as Alex started out as the email correspondent guy for GameSpot. The honest answer is for a lot of the older guys in Giant Bomb, most of them got into the business through at least a little bit of luck (at the very least early on with the fact that the market for getting into video games was much easier in the 90s and early to mid 2000s compared to now). Vinny might be the only one of the older guys who had a notable, directly marketable skill for when he was hired with his video recording background.
I might also be lucky in that most of my viewings of Dan, except for Mario Party Party and Metal Gear Scanlon is the much more relaxed Dan, so I don't find him nearly as grating as most other people.
Dan is a nice guy but he’s kind of a prime example of white guys failing upward.
That's... not really accurate and pretty insulting, because Dan is very good at what he does.
Honestly the only reason ya'll notice Dan over all the other fuckwits you likely hear from on a regular basis is because he is always willing to admit his ignorance. That is far more rare than people not knowing stuff that Dan doesn't know.

ya beat me to this, I don't think people know what failing upward means and it's super insulting to people who worked to get where they are, privileged or not.

Yes, Dan may be lucky, but here's the thing. Luck is simply when preparation meets opportunity. It's putting in the effort to be ready to make to take advantage of any opportunity you come across.
I also think one of Dan's biggest strengths and why he got where he is is that he wasn't afraid to ask for opportunities where other people would have assumed they'd be refused. "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

So did a lot of other people who didn’t make it. Survivorship bias is a real thing in fields like that.
People's lives rely on luck and hidden privilege a lot more than most would like to admit (or can themselves even notice). Dan put a lot of work to get where he is today, and I appreciate the hell out of him being open about how he got here and admitting his mistakes, since most people suffer from impostor syndrome and won't do so Lest Their Dirty Secret Be Found Out.
However, and I imagine this is what grates with lots of folks, he was in the past too quick to attribute his success solely to his own efforts and, to further compound it, he then mapped this expectation on other people, as if someone failing is because they didn't work as hard as he did, rather than it more likely being just a stroke of bad luck (or too commonly, discrimination).
Given that the rest of the cast has called him out when he voiced opinions like that in the past and he's been pretty receptive of others' advice I would hope most of these opinions have altered since he's voiced them, but yeah, they weren't great takes. I love Dan to bits with all his flaws, but if you're defending him, please don't do so by defending the bad opinions he's voiced in the past that he's hopefully moved on from. The just-world fallacy is a very harmful mindset to have regardless of form.
So something completely different. Are there particular Ryan videos people would recommend? I’ve seen him in some random videos I’ve watched and the Scanlon goes to North Korea video, but are there any Ryan heavy video series on Giant Bomb people would recommend?

Every time I watch the Best of Ryan videos and it shows the Kinect stuff and the Wiimote babysitting I absolutely lose my shit so there's probably whatever those are
It's new Giant Bomb thread so there just has to be another discussion about Dan being the Mr Magoo of video games.
Also, having a bunch of people on an internet forum critique Dan's career and level of privilege from afar is about one of the most entitled and privileged things I've seen. The irony is palpable.

edit: To make this post a little less vertical, I've put the Youtube embeds behind this spoiler tag. The Game Room video isn't available on Youtube in an official capacity.
I appreciate that Dan has embraced learning and trying new things. Sometimes the things he says can be exhausting, but at least when people yell "no Dan no!" he listens. And he's a fun member of the site. I miss Metal Gear Scanlon.

Two of my favorites are the Cook Serve Delicious QL and the Hotline Miami QL.
I always liked how Ryan Davis quotes would turn up in unusual places.
New Yorker Magazine:“There’s a lot of face and neck stabbing, if you like to stab dudes in the face and neck,” Ryan Davis explained on the Giant Bombcast. “There’s one really good move where you will stab a dude five or six times super quickly, shank style, like, uh uh uh uh uh, just jabbing—and that’s oddly satisfying.”
And the Kimmel Mean Tweets with Mark Ruffalo.

Holy moly this Dan and Abby America stream is starting out strong.
July 4th is Dan's favorite holidays (of course it is)
Dan only wants to hunt in Oregon trail
Dan doesn't understand preserving meat
Aaand Dan thinks Missouri super sucks but forgets he's from fucking Kansas.

I finally played Black Knight 2000 today! There's a shitty local bar/restaurant near my house that I almost never go to, and for a long time they had a dart board and like Golden Tee and that old police trainer lightgun game.
Well, I dunno how long ago it was, but they replaced that with an actual Black Knight 2000 table. Worked great, music sounded good, the coin return was a sticky piece of shit though and almost lost 2 quarters. I got a multiball on my first game like instantly, and my last game was only like 30k away from a 2nd extra ball. I forget how hard pinball is sometimes lol
Even if they capture lighting in a bottle again, what are the odds it takes over the staff the same way? Especially coming out in November instead of the early release of Hitman 2016?
edit: Part of the convo was definitely the episodic stuff which kept GB coming back to the game. Jeff and Drew made the argument that Hitman took over the site, and as good as DOOM 2016 was, Hitman 2016 was the only real option.
Jeff also has an ax to grind on games that include multiplayer modes he doesn't like. I think if Doom had a multiplayer he had gotten into heavily, it would have been a tougher fight.

Or if he had realized that multiplayer in Doom has always been a bonus mode.
I mean, they also leaned HARD into DOOM 2016 MP DLC. Constant patches to a MP mode people didn't really seem to care much about. Even SnapMap couldn't save them. I still say Jeff had a point about how much of a focus on MP there was.
Honestly, I loved the MP in Doom (II sunk dozens of hours into it) and was kinda annoyed that all Jeff said during GotY was it's bad" with absolutely no critical appraisal of it at all.
He played the first week of release, passed judgment on it, then never touched it again. Which would be fine if he didn’t then argue against the multiplayer based on that initial judgment during GOTY without taking seven months worth of improvements and updates into account.
At least on PC, the Doom multiplayer felt like drinking RC Cola compared to the Pepsi/Coca Cola of the single player. There was just enough difference in the feel of the combat and movement that I personally found it off-putting.
