Just as a talking point, I think it's interesting to compare the direction Sony is going this year with their exclusive games versus Microsoft.

Out of the 5 or 6 games Sony showed during their conference, only 1 is a sequel (Last of Us 2) and everything else was pretty much all new IPs. Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, Control, are all brand new. And Spider-Man is not a new character, but this is a brand new game universe for a new studio, and is such a brand new game.

Opposite that, Microsoft showed basically no new IPs this year. They just showed sequels to franchises that have been around for a pretty long time these days.

It's a tricky comparison to make between Microsoft and Sony--MS obviously focused more on sequels, but they still showed off at least five new IPs. Except some were those we'd been hearing of for a long time (or at least last year). Cyberpunk 2077, Sekiro, Sessions, Tunic, We Happy Few off the top of my head. But that was a, what, 10% of the 50 games they featured?

Sony just didn't have many titles (and some obvious absences, like Final Fantasy VII) at this one for various reasons. We've been watching Death Stranding for a couple years too, but it is a new IP. "At least" it's a likely exclusive (whereas Control is also coming to Xbox, unsurprisingly). Granted, Nier: Automata was also announced as an exclusive, and in less than 2 weeks it won't be, so there's that weirdness. I assume that probably won't happen with Death Stranding?

It's a weird comparison to make (at least for the detail oriented), since typically, the number of games featured by either of them is more similar.

A game that was a big one for people, Resident Evil 2 Remake, is also coming to Xbox One (and PC), so they had fewer exclusives shown than Microsoft did.

Isn't this the third E3 we've seen Spiderman? It certainly feels like it.

That doesn't mean people can't be excited for it. I've never really liked any Spiderman game going back to the PS2, and I don't really expect this change my mind, but on the flip side, now they actually have gameplay to show.

Don’t forget most all the games MS showed off were multi platform. Very, very few were first party.

Sony only showed off first party games. Apart from those quick montages between segments.

That said I certainly enjoyed MS’s conference more. Mainly because they showed off a ton of games I can’t wait to play on my PS4.

I guess we don't count Resident Evil 2, Destiny 2, Control and Kingdom Hearts 3. :P

(Or I'm just hallucinating and none of those were at Sony's conference.)

He literally mentions those right next to the sentence you bolded!

I think it's a very strained use of the terms "only" and "quick", especially if you're one of the people who thought the RE2 reveal stole the show (and plenty do).

Capcom (aside from SF5, of course) is pretty firmly multiplatform (I suppose Dead Rising was once an exclusive as well)--I suspect the RE2 reveal was a demonstration of why it's still good to get a first at your conference specifically. Likewise, it could be easy to think Control was an exclusive, but Remedy's never made a Playstation exclusive, nor will that be their first. Even assuming that you're not "most people" for watching E3 in the first place, some of the audience might not necessarily know better than to double check (or they might not pay attention to the end-of-trailer details).

Also, I just realized Nintendo said nothing on Baynetta 3... :(

Huh, neat, apparently Serious Sam 4 *was* on the show floor. They just havn't actually posted anything online about the demo they were running.

The number "100,000 enemies on screen at once" was being used.

QB did break free of the Windows Store at one point. I grabbed it and played through it on Steam. It's enjoyable. Alan Wake is better, but it was fairly inexpensive by the time I got to it.
You can tell they thought it might go further. The TV series stuff does not really work in its favor at all.

Take 2 apparently had a zen booth and didn’t really have anything at E3. Why spend the money when GTA online prints money and you know you’re going to sell at least 15-20 million copies of RDR2 by the end of the year without needing more marketing than they’ve already done?

I really don't give a monkey's nut if exclusives are or aren't "new IP", if they still feel fresh.

I'm writing off Halo Infinite and Battletoads because the trailers don't say squat but otherwise I don't think being a sequel is some sort of comparative knock against first-party content. I want to consume the shit out of more Ori and Cuphead. Jokes about Funko aside I am super hyped for a genre switch with Gears of War to diversify the series, as well as the way they're mixing up protagonists and overall tone. And as much as I'm bummed that the rumour Forza Horizon 4 was set in Japan never panned out, the Horizon games are literally the only car games I care enough to play both for their sheer quality and their emphasis on having a casual fun time as opposed to the stuffiness of their simulation counterparts and competitors.

Of course if we're going to compare all this against the absurd ocean of new third-party trailer hype (ignoring their timed exclusives and pledge of commitment to future first-party development) people are going to go "well nyeh they only really showed multiplats".

Re: Nintendo, I own a Switch and am super excited for Smash and I still thought their conference was weak as shit. But it's fine because not every E3 can be a Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Kirby/Yoshi year like last year was.

I can relate to that--I think that's why I cannot give a shit any longer about Death Stranding. It's been 98% Kojima without supervision (semi-pretentious bullshit) and 2% not very impressive gameplay.

I completely understand the hype around it. I remember when Metal Gear Solid 3 came out. I remember when they took P.T. behind the building and shot it, and it took Silent Hill with it. But I'm completely writing it off--yes, it's Kojima being super weird, and yes, I get that people love that, but for me it literally says nothing at all, or "Look at our weirdo art direction and nothing gameplay". Pretty much every other major element of Sony's conference impressed me more (especially the ones that are coming out on PC and Xbox anyway).

The more footage I watched of it on the Treehouse, the more hype I got for Killer Queen Black. I think it's the game I want to get my hands on the most out of all the conferences.

(I mean, technically that's Cyberpunk, but that's not going to be out for ages. This is more of a "in a reasonable timeframe" thing.)

I couldn't even begin to tell you what the message of Inside was.
@Aistan Conformity? In seeking 'oneness' and freedom we should beware what we might become.

That was my personal take-away message anyhow. :rotate:

I'm almost getting an Inside vibe from some of the dark and surreal spaces in Control. The effects are rad as hell in that gameplay video, too.

I see what you mean about inside, but hopefully this game is better than that.

Man, Inside was a fantastic experience. Like a weird dream.

Also, Microsoft bought Ninja Theory? Interesting...

    I did not like Inside

    Well, I don't like you!

    Kidding! Did you play Limbo?

Limbo never clicked with me, but I did like Inside--I genuinely think it's superior in almost every way.

I didn't really like either, although I liked what Limbo had to say a little bit more.

I have a feeling if you didn't like one, there's a good chance you wouldn't like the other--but the "messages" behind Limbo felt very uncompleted to me.

It wasn't super deep, but I just felt that inside wasn't much of anything.

Same for Limbo. "Stay away from children with blow darts," if you didn't already know.
