The Hatchet and The River would be good ones yea

I also liked Voyage of the Frog, which was by the same author of Hatchet, but doesn't have nearly the same popularity.

The second hatchet book was average, like it was literally a die hard 2 situation and made little sense why the character would do that to themselves.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

I also read John Carter of Mars as a young man, though I don't know if those are exactly age appropriate with all the murder and sexings. And John Carter hanging dong all over Mars.

What is the equivalent of Anne of Green Gables/Little House on the Prairie/Little Women but for boys? Stuff you read when you’re ~7-10 and is non-genre, several decades old, well-regraded children’s literature? (“For boys” is loaded but I mean starring boys or both boys and girls, not just girls)
Survival stuff like frightful’s mountain etc seems targeted a bit older?

    Hatchet?

EDIT: And Beat'd, but it seems to be a pretty popular choice.

I would possibly suggest Enid Blyton, but I have no idea if it's "problematic" nowadays? I've heard vague rumblings in that direction, but I've no idea if it was the books or just the author.

...and of course, as always, Kill Hitler.

Ender's Game is a pretty good book for kids

Just don't let the kids read any of the sequels

Or anything else Orson Scott Card ever said

White Fang and Call of the Wild, both Jack London classics, and aren't necessarily gender-specific.

I think they are better in the pre-teen years than the age we are looking for. And are worth having a discussion afterwards. Its a good book, but has some things that are good to talk about with the kid.

Actually that is good thing to do with all books. Talk about them after the kid has finished reading it.

Ender's Game -> Ender's Shadow -> [Shadow series] is probably better for a kid to read than the Speaker for the Dead series.

But I think the geo-political plotlines might be a bit over #1's head at his current age.

    Maybe in a few years.
