The second hatchet book was average, like it was literally a die hard 2 situation and made little sense why the character would do that to themselves.

I think they are better in the pre-teen years than the age we are looking for. And are worth having a discussion afterwards. Its a good book, but has some things that are good to talk about with the kid.
Actually that is good thing to do with all books. Talk about them after the kid has finished reading it.

he didn't give a reason why. a lot of his classmates are reading it right now and are super into it.
Hatchet and it's sequels, Sign of the Beaver, My Side of the Mountain
But I think the geo-political plotlines might be a bit over #1's head at his current age.
Maybe in a few years.
