Is this an appropriate place to say that I feel the whole concept behind the "Elf on the Shelf" as incredibly fucking creepy?
I’ve often mentioned to my friend that the *real* lesson to be learned from Elf on the Shelf is “no witnesses” and any smart kid would bury the elf somewhere secret.
Last time it came up recently I made a point of saying this in front of his second oldest daughter. She’s nine and very fond of swords, knights, and murder.
So I am reading through this tutorial on how to create bar graphs using a javascript package called D3.js. Now luckily I am not going to have to touch javascript with a billion foot pole. My job is to do the stats/data analysis in the back end. But considering I am the only person who has actual programming experience on the team and still can read java and to a point javascript I have been asked, "How do will fill the developer role for this package?"
So here I am trying to figure it out so I can have some one do it and also know how to produce the final data formats for the developer.

Cred, are you gonna adopt some cats when you move into your new place?
I am strongly considering getting one cat; I think 550 sqft is small for 2. Maybe I can find a cat that the shelter knows doesn’t like other cats/ doesn’t need a lot of company? I’m really worried about getting a cat that feels lonely.
Shelters are full of grumpy cats that don't get along with other cats. I think you could find an adult or senior cat that fits your description.
That’s probably the best option but I really want a kitten or teenage cat because they are cute! But I probably can’t give that sort of cat the environment it deserves so an anti-social old cat is probably better. Not too old though so I am not emotionally destroyed by it dying immediately...
I dunno how small your new place is (I cannot do square foot math), but cats generally don't need a ton of space. If you get cat trees like we have then they have artificially expanded space anyhow, and also they'll spend most of their time there, so whatevs.
...or not. Squid is currently curled up on a shawl I got for Christmas which I folded and put on top of a folded blanket by my bed, because they love soft things and that is where they have lived since I put it there, and Purissa has spent literal hours sitting on top of the vent like she does every day.

it's actually genius because if they sue you can just point out that they watch porno and they'll be too embarrassed to go through with it

Neural style transfer is literally what I've been working on hobby wise recently.
I have Gatys' paper on controlling the perceptual content of style transferred images up on my phone right now, it is what I read last time I was in the bathroom.
Is the fast style transfer thing a trained feedforward net, or does it take the style image as an input? Last I checked there was a lot of the former, but I don't know if people had gotten down doing it quickly for arbitrary images using non-specifically trained nets.

The elf is magic and if you touch it it dies
So all you have to do is touch it in secret and wait to see if it moves again to know your parents are moving the dead corpse of the elf around the house
As a game warden for Oklahoma’s Department of Wildlife Conservation, Cannon Harrison is used to working on investigations that take months and months. Catching poachers — whose illegal deeds often take place under the cover of night, in remote areas far from any road — frequently means relying on anonymous tips, conducting surveillance in small planes and collecting footage from hunters' trail cameras.
His latest bust, however, came easily — courtesy of the dating app Bumble.
The 24-year-old received a notification in December telling him that he had matched with a woman in his area. After she messaged him to say hello — unlike other dating apps, Bumble requires women to make the first move — Harrison asked how she was doing.
She had just shot a “bigo buck,” she told him — a big old buck. “Pretty happy about it,” she wrote.
At first, Harrison figured it had to be a prank. His profile on the dating app doesn’t mention what he does for a living. But in rural McIntosh County, a community of roughly 20,000 residents where he’s worked since 2017, plenty of people recognize him as the game warden.
“Honestly, the first thing I thought was that it was someone who was messing with me because they knew who I was,” he told The Washington Post. “It seemed too good to be true.”
Still, he decided to play along. The season in which licensed Oklahoma residents can hunt deer with a rifle had already ended. Shooting the deer with a crossbow would have been legal, however, assuming that the woman had done everything else by the book.
“Hell yeah, get em with a bow?” he wrote back.
The woman replied, “Well we don’t need to talk about that.”
Harrison inquired if the woman had been spotlighting — a term that refers to shining a bright light into the animal’s eyes, creating a literal deer-in-the-headlights effect. Also sometimes referred to as “spotting” or “headlighting,” the practice is illegal in Oklahoma. Considered by some hunters to be unsportsmanlike, it also raises safety concerns since spotlighters may not be able to see as far as they shoot.
“Yeahhhh,” the woman replied. She told him she had shot the deer on her ranch.
“Got a pic?” he inquired.
She sent him a photo of herself crouched next to a dead deer, holding up its antlers. A bright light — potentially a camera flash, but also possibly a spotlight — illuminated the nighttime scene.
The conversation ended there. Armed only with the woman’s first name, a photo and a rough sense of her location, Harrison searched through social media until he had figured out her identity. The next morning, game wardens showed up at her home.
Ok here is a thing, if I got a bunch of Drew Struzmen art as the style source and then put together a quick photoshop floating head poster composition, would that work?
I have conspiracy theories there are poster "artists" out there doing this exact kind of thing.

Definitely do this. I suspect ultimately things will fall under fair use due to transformation, but like, not a lawyer etc, so..
The issue is adjacent to: if you train a neural net using classified data, which part if any of the neural net is classified, and to what extent? It’s a tough problem and an enormous pain and I’ve never received clear guidance on the matter (and is likely a matter of individual choice for whoever is either the tech lead or the security lead or both)
also castle just fucking bugged me over and over and over until i got game pass so i can play this mummy zombie game with you guys what is it when are we playing
the conversation went something like
5 minutes ago castle: brian do you have game pass, were playing this game 4 minutes 45 seconds ago me: castle what game is that 4 minutes 15 seconds ago me: is it this game i bought the game pass is it this one im downloading it right now 1 minute ago me: castle how come you're not in the game right now

My understanding was always that the porn industry is particularly willing to wield the DMCA hammer
Which means regardless of how good a lawyer is, the result may be undistributable in practice, especially if it used parts of a lot of producers' content

I will take a look at this - for context, though, I actually already made a GPU accelerated matrix library capable of doing super fast multiplication. The work I'm presently doing (or will) is implementing convolution, which isn't super tricky, just fiddly and I have other things I should be (and am) working on.
Though I do have that Raspberry pi hanging around due a totally not anonymous benefactor :P

Carlton sued Fortnite for stealing the Carlton dance. He won't win because dance moves like that can't be copyrighted but he still sued, probably hoping the bad press against Epic would force a small settlement.
Copying porn moves, I bet you could get away with it but the risk of being hassled down the road ...

Yeah that was about two and a half years ago and it's a sexy research topic.
I'm babysitting some prototypes for emc testing tomorrow so I might dig out some new methods

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
So here I am trying to figure it out so I can have some one do it and also know how to produce the final data formats for the developer.
I want a GPU but mostly to fuck about with GPGPU, which is not really a reason to buy one right now.

This one is just in a park with some ducks, but the water looks like it was painted to me and I very much enjoy it.
And this one I just liked the light and the shadows.
I have so many pictures from hiking. They're on Google Photos, I should probably get them somewhere more visible sometime.

Pretty sure the RPi supports GPGPU and has an active development community for it.
Have not done any of this myself but

How is she pronouncing quinoa?
PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID
Correctly, if I know Mojo
She half friench right so I assume its
Le Quinoa hon hon hon hon
As I understand it, it would only be entrapment if he suggested she go spotlighting and then caught her.
Like, entrapment is inducing the crime, then prosecuting it. Not getting a confession after the fact when the perp doesn’t know you’re a cop.
Well, correctly. She can't read so isn't dropping any quin-oh-a bombs
kɪˈnoʊ.ə then.
Then my work here is done
