[SOTU] A call for unity to those obstructionist Democrats

edited February 2019 in Debate and/or Discourse
First time doing this. So if I do it wrong, shouldn't have done it, or someone does it better, this can be deleted.

So, tonight is the State of the Union, with the expectation that the President is going to call for unity, despite being the most antagonistic partisan President, at least in living memory.

I'm sure it's going to be chock full of facts, details, and uplifting ideas for the future.

Nah, just kidding.

With a shutdown looming just over a week away, and with it seeming quite clear Trump isn't getting wall funding through Congress, and some Republicans putting it out there that an "Emergency Declaration" could be a massive mistake, this could potentially be a disaster of epic proportions that is must-watch television.

Or... alternatively, as Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez responded about "What to watch" at this SOTU,

"None of it." - AOC, Democratic Congresswoman from NY-14.

It's going to suck having to listen to Trump's voice for ~90 minutes, but this is likely to be either the crowning achievement or final nail of his presidency. If he can't get a wall as a result of this, it's going to be extremely hard for him to do anything significant in the next two years, and it'll be a millstone around his neck, and that of those who align with him, for the 2020 election. Two years of full Republican control couldn't do it, and if he can't get it tonight (or in the next 8 days), he's not going to get it.

So, in the immortal words of Bette Davis, "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night."

Anyways, here's the expected livestream of the White House's official YouTube version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYU5VE2c6Ps&list=PL3ZQ5CpNulQljQvicyNLvB6E6aRUNGbnu&index=2&t=0s

As per mod edict, and good common sense...

2020 elections are OFF TOPIC

Don't get too into the weeds on policy point discussion and take the thread OFF TOPIC.

Don't live chat in the thread. When reacting to parts of the speech reference which part you're reacting to.

Is AOC a cool/good/effective politician or not? OFF. TOPIC.

Discussing the response speeches is ON TOPIC but @SoItGoes will be so pissed if she has to wade in here later and see a Bernie supporters/nonsupporters proxy fight happening. Keep discussion to the actual speeches.

At the end of the day, this is still an important part of our democracy.. even if it's a farce and a huurah moment for the party in power. I am not expecting anything coherent, and I'm hoping for at least truthful statements... but I suspect I'll be watching, surrounded by other forumites as all our various streams refresh at different times.

I think I'm going to take AOC's advice. I'll catch the cliffnotes afterwards, read highlights in G&T Steam chat, or catch up on the transcript tomorrow.

While it might be somewhat interesting to see an attempt to gaslight an entire nation in real time, I can't stand that man's voice. I also have other stuff I want to be doing at that time, so I'll be relying on those that are willing to suffer through it. I can't imagine there will be much truth involved, and lots of fear mongering over yet another caravan headed to our borders that just has to turn left and all that associated nonsense.

So to those that are willing to suffer through this idiocy, I thank you. I do want to know what lies he trots out, but I just can't bring myself to watch it.

I think I lose a couple of IQ points whenever I hear Trump speak. His cadence and delivery, and butchery of the language is just terrible.

I'll probably refresh and read this thread, and then read online articles about it after the fact.

I want no Dems standing and applauding for him. And I almost want Pelosi to be making faces at him behind his back, but she's too professional for that. I'm sure she'll have an iron mask on.

Its moderately better when he is on teleprompter but his delivery when on teleprompter is horribad. Just dull lifeless recitation of somebody elses thoughts that he will contradict within 24-48 hours and disavow all knowledge of by the end of the week.

It really isn't, though. For most of the history of the US, the duty of reporting on the state of the Union was handled via a report. It was only with the rise of mass media that the modern address was created, and it's more about the President trying to shape an agenda than actually reporting on the state of the Union.

Disappointed Pelosi didn't schedule this for after the CR runs out, but I guess I wasn't going to watch it live either way.

The only reason to watch the SOTU tonight, in my opinion, is to get an idea of what kind of propaganda Trump is trying to introduce so you can be prepared for yet another round of nonsense from brainwashed people one encounters later this week and beyond.

I have personally stopped engaging these individuals for the most part but that’s the only reason I would watch tonight. I’m probably not going to bother.

Absolutely will not be watching it, especially given how important to him ratings of his hate broadcasts are.

After the fact it's easy enough to see/read without giving him more viewership.

AOC grandstanding, but she'll be in the chamber. Maybe with fingers in her ears?

Sigh. I intended not to watch, have skipped the other two (after watching nearly every one since Reagan) but I hate even accidentally agreeing with her antics.

My sock drawer needs extensive rearranging by color, length, and fabric integrity long before I will feel the need to watch this pretender make a mockery of the post he dishonorably inhabits with this SOTU.

That being said, I'll probably take in some other person's safer distillation of the hostile brain toxin that will be vomited forth from this miscreant to his noxious contingent. I feel bad anyone has to translate from slavering con-man to American English, but we can at least be proud that some of the Fourth Estate still knows how to do their jobs despite being literally marked as The Enemy to their very faces.

I'm pretty sure I've still watched trumps. I'm not sure if it's out if obligation as I've always watched them and the rebuttal. I feel it's important. Or if part of me just wants to get angry at the man.

Thinking about the ratings makes me not want to watch. I don't have one of those Neilson boxes anyways so it doesn't matter.

I do wonder about that. Is attendance compulsory for the congresscritters?

Anyways, think of it less as "accidentally aggreeing with her antics" and more of "not wanting to hear Donald Trump talk for 5 minutes, much less 90 goddamn minutes."

He has to start pivoting away from trying to get the wall now to making it a rallying call for the 2020 down ballot elections.

Listening to Pod Saves America, it sounds like speculation is that Trump announces his Emergency Declaration regarding the south today. So that should be fun.

It's my birthday and even I have to draw a line. I'll be spending the evening with my roommate with the same day and year of birth drinking, eating burritos, and watching cartoons. Hopefully tomorrow's hangover will distract me from whatever new embarrassment was inflicted on the country.

The wall shit is extremely unpopular and the emergency declaration even less so somehow, so I don’t think that would go very well for him. His numbers haven’t significantly improved from the shutdown so going on to the biggest stage for a president only to fuck that same chicken again would not be smart.

So I guess it’ll happen 5 minutes in.

I can't stand to hear Trump speak for more than 10 seconds without wanting to jab q-tips in my ears, so I'm skipping.

I will say if he launches into personal attacks against Democrats (individually or as a party), like there was some speculation he would do pre-cancellation, the Dems should immediately walk out en masse.

Just saw a report that Trump has complained to his aides that early drafts of the SotU were “too gentle ” on Democrats, in case anyone was wondering how the speech is going to go tonight.

Trump is mad the SOTU speech doesn't target the Democrats enough for him.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/05/us/politics/trump-state-of-the-union.html
Still stung by his failure to use a partial government shutdown to pressure Congress into paying for his border wall, Mr. Trump has hardly been in the mood for collaboration with the other party, anyway. As he and his team have drafted his address in recent days, he has groused about the text, complaining that it is too gentle on Democrats, according to people briefed on the matter.
During a break in practicing the speech on Monday, Mr. Trump popped into a White House briefing that some of his aides were holding with allies expected to carry his message, and grew animated talking about Mr. Northam’s comments about abortion, according to one person in attendance. Mr. Trump called it a form of “late, late” term abortion that amounted to infanticide. He then mimicked Mr. Northam, the attendee said, running through what he had said about dealing with unwanted pregnancies after a baby is born.
I am not going to watch it because it will be even more awful than normal.

The running narrative today has been how the theme of the SotU would be unity and bipartisanship. So this should be fun.

It should be more than clear at this point that by “unity” and “bipartisanship”, Trump always means, you give me what I want, and you fuck off.

I'm personally curious if there's going to be verbal callouts (you lie always stands out in my mind), or maybe people outright leaving the chamber or shunning him.

Wild fantasy would be an announcement of impeachment proceedings starting.

I don't think there'll be verbal callouts just because like, that's complete fodder for Trump to get into a ridiculous shouting match (dragging the heckler down to his level) but a single or mass walk-out wouldn't be out of the question; there are already several Reps who are sitting out including the honorable John Lewis

I'd rather keep it low-key like the white dresses and such, maybe some boos. This guy is flailing pathetically now and coming off too aggressive/partisan just shores up his base by letting conservative media focus on anti-Trumpers instead of Trump screwing everything up. Especially if his screw up is an emergency declaration which every half-intelligent conservative knows is a horrible thing. He's likely to make an ass of himself yet again and that would be better news. Maybe pull this if he starts a rally and/or goes way off script or something, otherwise I would hold the fire.
