If you don't know James, he is a Jamaican writer whose previous book won basically every single award you can think of. This book was both his story but also built on research into African mythology. He still heard parts of it growing up so it wasn't completely squashed but learned a ton. His statements on homosexuality and gender fluidity in the mythology and writings of the old cultures and so on are highly interesting and probably not what you would think.
Also the interview is just a joy and worth listening to.
