[Another Eden] - JRPG with Chrono Trigger vibes

Another Eden - The Cat Beyond Time and Space is a JRPG that released last week for Android and iOS... no no wait come back! It's free to play, but sets itself apart from other F2P games in a few specific ways.
  • There's a whole game reminiscent of the old JRPGs you love.
  • It's a gacha but don't run away. The characters you meet in the main game can be used to get you through the game.
  • No stamina, no timers, no bullshit. Play the game.
  • There will be events in the future and they're not limited time. Once an event is added, it's there forever so the game becomes much more friendly for casual players.

Those characters that are included include:

opv9n839dq5k.jpg

"That last one is just Frog. He's even using the same name as Frog's master!"

Yeah so... when I mentioned Chrono Trigger vibes? Another Eden is directed by Masato Kato. The scriptwriter for Chrono Trigger. Yasunori Mitsuda also returns as composer.

Launch trailer:

It's a gacha so how does re-rolling work?
You kinda can't. One negative is the game is very stingy with its premium currency. You'll get enough for your first ten pull around 3 hours into the game, and there's a lot of unskippable cutscenes on the way there. But so far I've done two rolls and been pretty happy with the results. Also, when starting off, you get a character for free and can choose another 4* from a pretty sizable list.

Fuckin mobile games I don't wanna!
Another Eden is coming out on Switch at some point Soon(TM)

I dig this game. I'll say I do not like your OP. I've been playing a few hours and had not added the third character yet and feel a little grumpy that was spoiled for me.

It's a fun game, though. I wonder how they're going to make much money since there really seems to be no reason to spend.

What is this I don't even.

Another Eden, the Gacha wall feels like it happens after level 20 where 3 star characters stop progressing through their class boards until one unlocks them from grinding upgrade materials from repeatable dungeon runs.

    Edit:
I do like some of the actual game mechanics like switching characters in and out of battle to regenerate HP/TP or bring in a character that can hit the weaknesses of whatever you are fighting.

The music in this is really good. Not a surprise given that it's Mitsuda, but it deserves to be said.

It's been part of their marketing for the game. In fact, he's the only reason I took notice of the game in the first place.

Oh, well carry on! I don't recall how I got into the game. I actually just ran into him and he murdered me.

There's a new update coming tomorrow at some point with a new banner that focuses on healers. Also an event with a new free character.

My kid was messing with my phone the other day and somehow downloaded this? I'm thinking it was in an ad or something. I was about to just delete it but I noticed Yasunori Mitsuda on the credits so I have it a try...

So far... I dunno. The gacha elements nearly made me quit in the first area, and the story seems a little unoriginal, but I just got through chapter 5 and thought the chase scene with Galliard was pretty cool. I'll give it another week, but I'll be damned if I start playing the gacha for more than just advancing the plot.

EDIT: On my first 4 star pull I got Bivette. I picked her somewhat randomly, since I have no idea if any of the 4 stars are any good. Her voice acting is craaazzy. "Yay! Will you play with me!?!"

So what's the deal with Horrors? It seems like there's no practical way to take them on while following the storyline, so is there a point when you can return to them later when you have a more powerful team?

I started this, though haven't played much of it. Enough to get the first pick of the random characters. It seems cool.

I guess I should play with the sound on then?

Yeah, it's interesting that all the 4 star characters have voice acting, though I don't know how common that is among other gacha games.

The music in this game is so good. It's literally the first mobile game I'm playing where I make an effort to plug in headphones and play with audio on.

I'm on chapter 23 (out of 25 or 26) of the main story, I can provide some info on characters and the gacha:

First off, there are exactly 3 "tiers" of characters in the game.

    1) Trash/filler characters.

These are the characters that are defined by being 3-star only, no voice acting, no personal quests, and are all palette swaps of three different pieces of art.
They are openly just gacha filler and you can ignore them!

    2) Normal characters.

Normal characters are 4-star max, and can be pulled in their 3 or 4-star form. They all have voice acting, personal quests, and unique art.
If you have the 3-star version you can grind out mats to upgrade them to 4-star.
All the story characters are this tier (for now) and you get them as 3-star.

    3) 5-Star max characters.

These characters can be pulled as either 4-star or 5-star. They all have voice acting, personal quests, and unique art.
If you have the 4-star version you can grind out mats to upgrade them to 5-star. I hear this is much harder than upgrading a 3 to a 4.

Next, about character power and balance:

Characters start falling behind once they run out of upgrade spots on their boards.
This means 3-star characters start falling behind around level 25. 4-star characters start falling behind around level 50.
Story characters are perfectly usable to beat the main game IF YOU UPGRADE THEM.
I would say this is feasible to do with one or two story characters, but it would be a huge grind to use JUST a story team.
What the game wants you to have is a full party of 4-star characters. I have two 5-star characters and they are clearly stronger, and having a full team of 5's would make the game a joke.

    How the gacha works:

It's 100 stones to pull a single character. NEVER DO THIS, because...
For 1000 stones you can pull 10 characters, and the final pull is a guaranteed 4 or 5-star.
If you are a paying player, for 1000 paid stones you can do a 1-time 10 pull and the final character is guaranteed 5-star. This costs about $23 USD if you buy the one-time 1000 stone package.

Most importantly, though - the game showers you in free stones as you play the game. I think I've collected over 4000 stones just from doing stuff you want to do anyway:

50 stones for completing each story chapter.
10-30 stones for each side quest and character quest (and there are a lot of these)
30ish stones for racking up kills of each monster in the game
20 stones for your first kill of every Horror monster
10 stones for every new character you pull
A bunch more stones for filling out your materials/weapons/armors collections.

Bottom line, your character line up (for a free player) is going to look something like this:

    1) Start with 3-star story characters + your starter 4-star + the free 4-star Miyu everyone gets in their mail.
    2) Every 1000 stones you earn do a 10-pull and work in any new 4-star characters you get (and you will always get at least 1).
    3) Supplement that with upgrading your 3-star characters to fill any gaps you have.

Who to pick for your starter 4-star:

    Short term strategy:

Choose a healer (Pom, Prai, or Krervo). 3-star healers really suck, you don't want to be progression blocked because you don't have a 4-star healer on your team.

    Long term strategy:

Choose Ciel, because in a later update he becomes 5-star max.

    Hope this helps!

Holy shit this game is scarily good. Like, wow, yeah I can see this being on the Switch alright.

Edit- like when I left the starting village to go get a piece of wood I literally said aloud, “Holy shit really?!”

i don't normally play mobile games because i've sworn them off on principle (i think the whole gacha thing is kind of Gross, tbh)

but i decided to pick this one up because of the Good Things i've heard about it, including "least aggressively monetized gacha" being thrown around

i'm still in the lil' tutorial town/prologue area but it seems really goddamn neat so far. definitely Game First, Gacha Second and i appreciate that a whole lot. so i'm basically just treating it like a nice lil' casual single player JRPG. playing only in short sessions each day.

it's neat. i won't be spending money on it, but it's nice to know that i won't ever have to.

plus they gave me Miyu for free as part of that pre-registration campaign despite me not pre-registering so NEAT????

Games like this if I play for a long time and enjoy my experience i'll give them some money just because I want to show my appreciation. That's what I did with Warframe.

I don't know if this will be one of those games but yes it is nice that that's even an option, to play it then pay if you would like to down the road.

Nothing has been said but I would pretty much guarantee it, there is no reason to think that they will change something that integrated into the game and the primary financial model for it.

not only does nintendo have multiple gachas on phones, they went out of their way to partner with the most successful japanese gacha maker to make one of them!

The Japanese love the gacha. Like it’s not just a financial model for free games, but a core aspect of the fun.

hmmm so i just completed chapter 2 and i guess this is where the game actually "starts"

did anyone else have some really awful framerate issues in ch2 in baruoki/baruoki forest? had no issues prior to this, only when it started to rain. was hitting sub-30 FPS, just really choppy. menus were fine. got better once i got into moonlight forest but still not quite where it should've been.

i think it's better now that i'm in ch3, but.... hmmmm...

Dang I hate Miyu's voice lines when she attacks.

One sounds like straight-up porn dialogue.
