Musicals! Specifically, cartoon ones! Musicals have been an indelible part of the American cultural landscape for decades, and the animated musical is no different!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a 1937 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and originally released by RKO Radio Pictures. Based on the German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, it is the first full-length cel animated feature film and the earliest Disney animated feature film. The story was adapted by storyboard artists Dorothy Ann Blank, Richard Creedon, Merrill De Maris, Otto Englander, Earl Hurd, Dick Rickard, Ted Sears and Webb Smith. David Hand was the supervising director, while William Cottrell, Wilfred Jackson, Larry Morey, Perce Pearce, and Ben Sharpsteen directed the film's individual sequences.

Disney, I'm sure we can all agree, is the undisputed king of the animated musical feature film. They were the first to pair animation and sound for Pete's sake!

Disney would reliably and regularly produce animated musicals, following Snow White with two more smash hits, Pinocchio and Fantasia, both released in 1940.

Fantasia is the superior film in my opinion from an artistic standpoint, it's a much braver film than Pinocchio and everything about it is beautifully realized. The concept behind Fantasia was for it to be a different film each time one saw it, with new pieces constantly being produced and sent to theatres, though of course this was basically impossible to realize at the time.

Disney would go on to produce dozens of award winning animated films, often musicals based on public domain fairy tales, and it was arguably these films more than any others that would make Disney the household name it is today, what with owning all the media.

Hooray?

Anyway!

Animated films fell off a bit in the 70's and 80's due in part to a dip in quality, and while this era did produce some notable fan favorites like Aristocats and Robin Hood (ironically emblematic of Disney's cost-cutting (or corner-cutting) measures as both of these films blatantly re-used animations from Snow White, among other films) it wasn't until...

The Little Mermaid. Disney's life raft. Struggling following several embarrassing box office performances from movies like Oliver and Company (a film i have no memory of other than being uncomfortably attracted to a fucking poodle thanks Disney) The Little Mermaid basically kick-started what would come to be called The Disney Renaissance. Within 5 years, you'd see the following films release.

This is within 5 years of the Little Mermaid's release. 5 years.

Of course, Disney is the top name in the biz, but they aren't the only name in the industry. Don Bluth famously made animated musicals for both Disney and competing studios, sometimes even good ones!

Then, of course, there's always the odd duck, the seemingly random release that proves to be a classic!

Animation fits the style of the broadway musical like a glove. Unfettered by the limitations of a stage, the art takes wing, and invokes a sense of wonder that's hard to describe when it's done properly.

Disney and other animation studios have continued to push the envelope with their ground-breaking animation techniques and story-telling, touching whole generations and leaving a mark on the American, indeed the world's, culture that will never be erased. What are your favorite animated musicals? Also, since there is so much crossover between live-action and animated musicals these days, you can probably go ahead and post some about live musicals too!
