Musicals! Specifically, cartoon ones! Musicals have been an indelible part of the American cultural landscape for decades, and the animated musical is no different!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a 1937 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and originally released by RKO Radio Pictures. Based on the German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, it is the first full-length cel animated feature film and the earliest Disney animated feature film. The story was adapted by storyboard artists Dorothy Ann Blank, Richard Creedon, Merrill De Maris, Otto Englander, Earl Hurd, Dick Rickard, Ted Sears and Webb Smith. David Hand was the supervising director, while William Cottrell, Wilfred Jackson, Larry Morey, Perce Pearce, and Ben Sharpsteen directed the film's individual sequences.
Disney, I'm sure we can all agree, is the undisputed king of the animated musical feature film. They were the first to pair animation and sound for Pete's sake!
Disney would reliably and regularly produce animated musicals, following Snow White with two more smash hits, Pinocchio and Fantasia, both released in 1940.

Fantasia is the superior film in my opinion from an artistic standpoint, it's a much braver film than Pinocchio and everything about it is beautifully realized. The concept behind Fantasia was for it to be a different film each time one saw it, with new pieces constantly being produced and sent to theatres, though of course this was basically impossible to realize at the time.
Disney would go on to produce dozens of award winning animated films, often musicals based on public domain fairy tales, and it was arguably these films more than any others that would make Disney the household name it is today, what with owning all the media.
Hooray?
Anyway!
Animated films fell off a bit in the 70's and 80's due in part to a dip in quality, and while this era did produce some notable fan favorites like Aristocats and Robin Hood (ironically emblematic of Disney's cost-cutting (or corner-cutting) measures as both of these films blatantly re-used animations from Snow White, among other films) it wasn't until...

The Little Mermaid. Disney's life raft. Struggling following several embarrassing box office performances from movies like Oliver and Company (a film i have no memory of other than being uncomfortably attracted to a
fucking poodle thanks Disney) The Little Mermaid basically kick-started what would come to be called The Disney Renaissance. Within 5 years, you'd see the following films release.

This is within 5 years of the Little Mermaid's release. 5 years.
Of course, Disney is the top name in the biz, but they aren't the only name in the industry. Don Bluth famously made animated musicals for both Disney and competing studios, sometimes even good ones!

Then, of course, there's always the odd duck, the seemingly random release that proves to be a classic!

Animation fits the style of the broadway musical like a glove. Unfettered by the limitations of a stage, the art takes wing, and invokes a sense of wonder that's hard to describe when it's done properly.

Disney and other animation studios have continued to push the envelope with their ground-breaking animation techniques and story-telling, touching whole generations and leaving a mark on the American, indeed the world's, culture that will never be erased. What are your favorite animated musicals? Also, since there is so much crossover between live-action and animated musicals these days, you can probably go ahead and post some about live musicals too!

I send the sword I send the horde Thus Say the Lord
Is a pretty good line.
Deliver Us is great, it's a fantastic opening number! I like the song All I Ever Wanted too.
I dunno.
Plagues is a "fuck you, get smote" kinda song
Which you don't get often enough in musicals.
The "wrath of god" song is an acquired taste.
I dunno, it's just 2 white 2 colorless mana.

He can do good shit.
Taron Egerton as Quasi, the kid can sing and move and he'll need to, it's a hugely physical role, especially with all the makeup (NO CG QUASI 4 ME) and body prosthesis.
Janelle Monae as Esmerelda. She's amazing and I think she'd nail God Bless the Outcast.
Channing Tatum as Phoebus
Jim Cummings is probably too old to play Claupin, huh? He's basically just Hunchback's version of Cabaret's MC, so we need someone who can carry that sort of energy, especially into the sinister segments where our heroes explore the Court of Miracles.
Logan Paul as Frolo, but only for the part where he falls into the molten lead and gets also killed by an angry gargoyle face (the only remnant of the living gargoyle characters besides maybe some fun nods, ie, seeing them in the background with the old lady one covered in pigeons)
Frolo is honestly the biggest sticking point for casting for me... what about John Rhys Davies? He's got a big booming voice and he could probably pull it off.
edit: Alan Cummings not Jim Cummings i always do that

She’s been working years on her musical Hadestown. I’ve heard her sing every song with just a guitar, and now she’s got it to where she wants it. Give it a listen. It is a retelling a few myths, particularly that of Orpheus, but also Persephone and the like. Hades rules Hadestown.

It has some trippy visuals, some musicians selling their soul to a rock and roll wizard and the voice talents of members of Blondie, Cheap Trick, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and Earth Wind & Fire.

A couple of posts mention various musical episodes of various shows, and whether the show manages to pull it off or not, they've become something of a tradition!
Psych, Scrubs, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, many live action shows have had musical episodes, and animated shows are no different.
Bob's Burgers has had a couple with the music being genuinely a high point of that series for me consistently, but especially so in their dedicated musical episodes.
