It's a very good bit of character that you can get for Jason from this collection that he 1) doesn't want love letters and 2) assumes that's what he's getting even though he doesn't actually read them.
It's speculated (though no one knows for sure) that the reason that "heart" shape, which doesn't look like a real heart, came from the seed, or possibly the fruit, of the now-extinct Silphium plant. Pictured here:
Silphium was an (apparently) very successful contraceptive. So successful that the Romans made it extinct.
What is even better is that to the romans, that shape wasn't a "heart." It was instead said to be the shape of a pair of balls.
