IFTTT Help: Android phone and Wifi

MugsleyMugsley DelawareRegistered User regular
There's some background info that doesn't matter much, but I'm trying to automate having my phone move from my 5GHz wifi to my 2.4 GHz wifi at a certain time of day (and switch back at another time of day).

On the surface, this seems like something well within the wheelhouse of IFTTT but poking through the app, I can't find anything down this road, beyond "Turn Wifi on/off." Has anyone used a different service to achieve this, or is there something I'm not seeing after about 5-10 mintues poking through options in IFTTT?

You could try Tasker, it can do some pretty advanced stuff. I assume that each network has a different name? If yes then yeah I think Tasker can get it done.

Is there a reason why? I'm having trouble figuring out what's being accomplished by jumping around at certain times.

    Interference?

When I'm on my 5G network while I'm upstairs (putting kids to bed, going to bed, etc), the phone constantly drops and reconnects (like every 15 seconds). On the 2.4GHz network, there's no issue.

Yes I know the difference between the two and yes 2.4 is better range. 5G has fewer devices on it at home so I like to stay on that as much as I can.

I'll take a look at Tasker.

There's a few "wifi switcher" apps on the play store (with mixed reviews) if the meta-apps don't pan out.

    (I've not tried any)

It shouldn't matter how many devices are on the band, it's all the same network. Neighbors can be an issue but if your home is that large and you have that much interference from neighbors you might look into newer hardware.

I'll second Tasker though. It should do what you're looking for, and a hell of a lot more. It's a deep rabbit hole to start wandering.

I gave Tasker a shot last night and it worked! I will probably go back for both tasks to make sure it sends a Notification the first few times it does its thing.

I'm now considering pulling in the two "turn wifi on/off" tasks I have in IFTTT that don't always work so great, to see if Tasker can do a better job. And, for sure, it's a deep rabbit hole.

Tasker can do some seriously crazy stuff if you choose to go down that rabbit hole. Some of it you will need to build on a PC or I guess use a text editor on your phone.

It looks like Tasker is being backgrounded. Workarounds abound and I'm not sure if it's worth the effort to incorporate any of them. This shouldn't be so difficult.

On my Galaxy S8, and most newer Android phones, there are options under the power setting to set specific apps to exempt. It should only take a minute or two.
