Do you have a favorite side character in a TV show, but don't know their name? Especially if they don't actually have a name, or need it. A character with character, that doesn't take a big part of any episode.

For me, it's the news reader from Rome. Reading one day that Caesar is an enemy of the Republic, a few episodes later that glorious Caesar has prevailed over his enemy, it does not matter to the news reader because he is doing a job, adding his own spice when appropriate. Rain or shine, to huge crowds or an audience of no one, the man keeps delivering the news. Here's to you, news reader.

I think competence absolutely exists, and I have been pretty amazed by how much more confidence I’ve gained in my abilities just as a result of time and experience.

That said, competence is, I feel, almost always limited to sort of a defined domain. Whereas, the modern world is brimming with outside context problems that complicate things beyond what past experience can actually help us with.

And then there’s the fact that even the most competent people are going to bump up against the ceiling of human limitations, which are many, and it feels like we’re becoming more acutely aware of them every day.

So Howard Stern yesterday played footage from one of his reporters at Fist Fest where the basics are exactly what you would expect. Spoilered for absolutely extreme sex stuff
It was a very large number of dudes, who enjoyed fisting, a lot. Basically based much of their identity around it from their twitter handles to their day to day life. The stuff they were into is EXTREMELY bodily damaging and highly risky. Many of them have prolapses many inches long (one of them over 10 inches)... everyone seemed happy and joyful even as they were discussing stuff where if one person did one thing wrong the person would just die (eg: someone shoulder deep inside another person, inches from their beating heart).

I do marvel at the breadth of the human experience, even if my desire to participate in most of it is less than zero. It was absolutely fascinating to me looking/listening through this window of experience I have no frame of reference for and hearing the happiness of the folks involved.

In some of the porn circles I ran in on Tumblr you'd occasionally get someone into fisting who was really into severe vaginal prolapse and wanted to figure out how to cause it in themself and it generally came from a very bad case of misunderstood anatomy and there were lots of posts that were shared around that were like: PSA that's definitely A Thing than can happen but it's bad please go to your doctor if it does !!!

(I am not into fisting and my place in these communities remains ambiguous)

I’m watching Anne with an “E” right now and it’s really well done but I have to wonder how much of the constant child abuse was actually a part of the era or just something the show has dialed up for dramatic effect, because it can be harrowing to see with such frequency and ubiquity

But if we’re looking at, like, the whole of human endeavor and asking “do we have everything under control?” the answer is no and we never have. There aren’t really any static periods in human history, none of the things we think of as being solid and stalwart really last all that long without changing dramatically on any scale that exceeds a human lifespan. Most of our perception of long venerable traditions just completely ignores the fact that they’ve been in constant flux and we’re just smoothing over all of that when we look back at them, etc.

I haven't read the book recently enough to remember how much of that was accurate to what was written, but definitely some I think ? There was definitely a sense in some of it like there was some vaguely scary stuff that Marilla was keeping from Anne in bits like that.

Being successful seems to mostly be a function of either getting out of bed in the morning and doing something or convincing other people that you didn’t really need to get out of bed in the morning and do stuff and it would be better if they just did it for you.
