Trans-related healthcare in Canada

Hi everyone,

Very briefly, my situation is that I'm finishing up a PhD, hopefully within fourish months, and planning on moving to Canada, ideally Vancouver, a couple of months after (my wife and I have already applied for permanent residence via the Express Entry program). You can probably infer my question from the thread title; I'm trans and have no real idea how to navigate that in the Canadian system, practically. Most of the web searches I find including hormone therapy bring me to various sites for post-menopausal women, and any web search involving trans health care immediately returns a trillion results about surgery, which is not what I'm searching for. I have plenty of time before this really matters, but I'm trying to get as many ducklings in a row as possible, as early as possible. So my broad question is thus: is there anything I need to know, or can look at now, that will show me how to go about getting access to transgender-type hormone replacement therapy in Canada, probably BC, probably Vancouver? Or at least any resources that could aid me in developing a plan/knowing if there are any hoops to jump through (I feel like there won't be particularly many here, but I know that the degree to which attempting to get hormones is akin to a circus varies wildly by country).

I don't have experience in this in particular, but in regards to the medical system - once you have residency, you should have access to health care once you acquire a health card. You'll need to find a family doctor/GP who has power to write prescriptions and also refer you on to a specialist. I have to assume there are resources for that specific area as to specific, recommended LGBTQ2 friendly doctors - maybe check if there are any specific groups in the Vancouver area who support trans people, they might have a list? (I see the Vancouver Public Library has some, for example: https://guides.vpl.ca/c.php?g=698666&p=4959166 )

The alternative if you can't find a family doctor (and be warned, it can actually be tough to find them; many are booked up full and it can take months of effort), is to check for local clinics where GPs will work certain extra hours. But a family GP is a better option as they'll have your health records and be more reliable when you need to go in.

The SE thread might also have some good resources, I know there's a decent Vancouver contingent there.
