So I've seen this bantered around in both the DC and Marvel Comics thread about having a place to discuss Indie Comics, so I thought it was about time we make a thread for it. So what am I defining as Indie Comics? Pretty much anything that is not publichsed by the big two, or their imprints (so Vertigo could go in the DC Comics thread and Icon Comics in the Marvel thread, for example). So what Indie Comics are you reading and what publishers interest you? Post about it here.
Some of the bigger Indie Comics scene (though this list is far from definitive):
Boom Studios!
If you are seeing a nostalgia comic aimed at 20 or 30 somethings, its likely published by Boom! Studios as they publish the new Buffy comic, Big Trouble in Little China, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics, Rugrats, Clueless, Adventure Time, Labyrinth, etc. They also publish a lot of original material as well, quite a few of which are LGBTQ+ friendly or explicitly LGBTQ+ focused. Well received and popular books by them include Judas by Jeff Loveness and Jakub Rebelka; Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson, Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, and Brooke Allen; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; Mouse Guard by David Peterson; Klaus by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora; and much more. They might be my personal favorite of the Indie Publishers I buy from right now?
Image Comics has been around since the 90s, founded by the popular artists of the early 90s (Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, Marc Silvestri, and Whilst portacio) for creator owned work that could be published. They have been around ever since. Popular comics from them include Spawn by Todd Mcfarlane; Kick-ass by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.; paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughn, Cliff Chiang, and Matt Wilson; Deadly Class by Rick Remender and Wes Craig; Saga by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples; and so, so, so much more.
Dark Horse Comics; founded in the 1980s, and where you used to go to get all your pop culture comics (though they still have quite a bit I think). Also known for publishing many popular comics like Hellboy by Mike Mignola; Sin city by Frank Miller; Usagi Yojimbo b Stan Sakai; Umbrella Academy by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba;The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro and David Lapham; and a lot more.
And there are alot more publishers out there: IDW Publishing, Oni Press Publishing, Dynamite Publishing, Valor Comics, Antartic Press, Archie Comics, etc.
So what are some good Indie Comics you are reading right now? Any publishers you want to highlight? Any Indie comics news you want to discuss (Like Oni Press and and Lion Forge's merger recently as an example)?
I've recently picked up Destiny, NY, which has been a lot of fun:
Set in a version of New York City where magic is a real and accepted part of life, Logan McBride struggles to find purpose. She was the subject of an incredible prophecy when she was a child, but fulfilled her foretold destiny when she was just thirteen. Now in her twenties, Logan navigates through graduate school for Prophecy Kids while searching for her place in a world that tells her sheʼs already finished. Slice-of-life romance and drama meets the mysterious intrigue of urban fantasy in the first volume of this brand new graphic novel series by author Pat Shand (Guardians of the Galaxy, Robyn Hood) and Manuel Preitano (Wonderland, Goddess Inc).
Its funny, humorous, often sweet, and very engaging.
