My neighbors are great. Everyone is nice and their kids are nice and it's like living in Mayberry which deep down freaks me out because there's definitely some dark shit going down just under the surface.
Our neighbors to one side called the building inspector on us after we wouldn't let them continue to rent the cottage in the backyard when we purchased our house. And then they proceeded to rent out the place next door. Thankfully we knew our cottage was up to code at the time of construction and could show permits from the city, but I steadfastly refused to even acknowledge their existence after that.
The house to the other side is just weird. It's been in the same family for generations and now they have been using it to house their kids as they go through the local university. But they've done basically zero maintenance over the years. Most of the backyard is literally inaccessible due to a) the shoulder-high vegetation growing in the back yard, b) the pile of old box springs/mattresses in the middle of said back yard, and c) the mid-80s Buick and mid-90s Pontiac Sunfire that have both been abandoned in the yard. They have a cottage out there that could easily pull in $1k/month if it were in decent shape. Also a garage that is falling down - the roof looks to be partially collapsed - and a garden space behind the cottage and garage that would be amazing if it hadn't been completely neglected over the past decade. Pretty sure where our recent termite swarm came from their garage.
Wooo only a 184 cost for court the house is mine MF's i cleaned the yard to what was asked for!
You had to go to court over what I'm assuming was a building code violation? That seems pretty crazy given how long the process takes out here - multiple rounds of notices, inspections, etc, before any real citations get issued.
"If complete and utter chaos was lightning, then he'd be the sort to stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armour and shouting 'All gods are bastards'."
I bought my house last year. After dealing with landlords and neighbors for the past 17 years I was pretty excited to have woods behind me, woods to my left, woods accross the street(all protected land so no developments forthcoming), and a quiet older couple to my right.
About a month into moving here it's mid summer and sleeping with the windows open for that cool night air and also for cats to sit in and observe the yard. Around daybreak wake up to distant loud noises and voices. Whatever, keep eyes closed and wait for alarm to go off. Ten minutes later the doorbell rings and there's door knocks. I get out of bed throw some sweatpants on and go down.
Young lady with a two or three year old girl with a bag is at my door asking me to call the police because her father is abusing her and her daughter and he's dangerous. Oh fuck, let them inside and call 911, get some juice for the girl while her mom tells terrible stories. Five minutes later my house is surrounded by cops I let them in and they interview the young lady while me and my girlfriend try to distract this terrified child.
Cops call this young lady by name( I didn't give it over the phone) and they're acting really dismissive toward her. This doesn't feel right till I Google some of the codes they radios back in..... She's apparently got a bunch of prior psychological and drug arrests. She also apparently had a concealed paring knife on her(like the tiny dollar store plastic handle jobs) for self defence. Turns out she's not the legal guardian of her daughter, her father and step mom who live 2 houses down have custody and the mom comes before work to visit her daughter from time to time. Today she flipped out, threatened her father and step mom and kidnapped her daughter and came to my house to get the cops called on them.
So she gets carted off, her daughter is too scared to make a noise and is silent crying and pees on my couch(no diaper). We clean her up and take a diaper out of the mother's bag and set her up with one. Stepmom comes to pick up baby and is super distraught and embarassed...last cop is like like well, that's one way to meet your neighbors.
This has remained to this day the only interaction I have had with any of my neighbors. Overall still head and shoulders above dealing with apartment neighbors.
That's a lot to process for one day. I hope the best for the kid and that you don't have to deal with any of that again.

We're in a condo and our neighbors are pretty alright. The people above us are loud sometimes but never late at night or early in the morning so I have no beef with them. The only neighbor I don't like is whoever on my floor keeps smoking out their condo and making the hall smell like pot. I mean, I get it, we all like weed but we also all have a balcony for a reason.
My most memorable neighbor was in the other half of the duplex I used to live in. Barnabus looked like an old hippie, always wore an unbuttoned hawaiian shirt (even in Wisconsin winter), and was very open about how much he liked smoking crack. Like, he had a heart attack from smoking too much crack and then checked himself out of the hospital so he could go home and smoke crack.
He was actually fairly nice and we got along most of the time until he took and opened a box of books that my roommate had shipped to her because "It was real heavy so I thought there might be drugs in it."
A silly follow up the head of the yard police rolled up yesterday since we got away with small fines for having a messy yard {he is the one that sent us to jail back in April} he did what I refer as a Dean Wormer saying we were on secret probation because of the history of not caring for the yard

My neighbors are usually pretty chill but it's after midnight now and every apartment directly adjacent to ours apparently is having a party. My baby is asleep and they're stomping around like fucking rhinos and slamming all the doors and I'm getting real fucking mad
I really cannot wrap my head around this whole "arrested for weeds" thing. Are the weeds piranha plants? Have they been eating the local dogs? Does the police commissioner have very bad hayfever and an axe to grind? Why is it even possible for that to be a thing?
My friend is working on a roguelike game you can play if you want to. (It has free demo)
My neighbours have generally been pretty decent and I've not interacted with much in the past. The exception being the man nearly twice my age who got obsessed with me until I threatened to go to the police, that was an unsettling time.
My current neighbours have been in their house years and years and are a lovely eccentric couple. They hoard a lot of unusual stuff in their front and back yard but it doesn't hurt anyone and we've had nice chats with them before. Unfortunately our landlord is on terrible terms with them over a shared wall dispute and knowing my landlord he's probably the issue not the neighbours.

It's probably the same as "arrested for parking tickets". It starts off minor, but just builds because someone has a thing for doing paperwork (and being a dick).
I am trying to find out the rules since most of it was tossed out in court but I found some interesting city offenses
132.11 REMOVAL OF EARTH.

(4) This section shall be construed as being supplementary to any sections of this subchapter relating to rubbish, litter, refuse and shall not be construed to permit the parking or placing of dismantled, partially dismantled or inoperable motor vehicles on any public street.
It was all the weeds and wild grass in my yard they had issues with as well as the dead truck that is in essence a project
Earlier in the thread I posted what my yard looked like before we buzzed it down. But yes as my brother pointed out it was a boring 28 hours of jail with a bunch of people with felony drug offences. I learned much from my visit like why would you microwave marijuana? Slang for child molesters. When we had people on work release when I was at the hell known to men they said I was not the person you screw with in jail. They were right. as I was avoided like the plaque.
When I was... I wanna say 13 I was sitting in my room one Saturday evening watching Toonami. Pretty chill enjoyable evening until someone shined a flashlight into my window and looked in. Terrified thirteen year old me just recoiled and stared while the individual introduced themselves as a cop and asked if I had seen my neighbor.
So needless to say, I ran to wake up my father who was currently taking a nap. He went around and let the cops in the backdoor to talk. Turns out our neighbor beat his wife and the police were currently searching for him. So that was my neighbor growing up. He was our neighbor for years to come despite that and was pretty consistently shitty. Go figure.
Also I still don't fucking know what the fuck that cop was thinking.

"Public nuisance" seems like a really unbelievably broad and bullshit thing to jail someone over especially with regards to something as banal as a messy yard.

With regards to a messy yard, in some parts of the country it can become a fire hazard during the summer. I've had grass catch on fire before and holy hell does it move fast, and that was short cut and a few inches long. When its tall and dry you can get a little firestorm in a front lawn. That being said around here if your lawn gets too tall the city will just cut it and bill you for it.
Most laws though are based around property value degradation, and are varying levels of asinine, and don't take into account modern landscaping techniques and are all about that grass.
Found a flyer in the staircase yesterday. Neighbours a few houses down are inviting the whole street to a bring your own food BBQ on the street side this summer.

Earlier in the year the rental behind me to the right it's fence blew down. The person renting it demanded we pay for a new one. We told him look at your rental clause needlessly to say he ran from that rental.
About 2 weeks ago they replaced it but threw the old fence in my yard. I used the fence to patch up one side of the backyard fence and replaced the rotted upright with part of it.
When my father was still alive my neighbor to the right whom we have had problems with ran his car into the retaining wall knocking out the support beam. It just tumbled down. Because he was at fault and it being under this states bizarre insurance laws it was a housing insurance claim so the fence issue happened in 2010 he finally got it fixed in 2018. THat is the reason there is a large pile of dirt spilling into the street.
I really want to wrap my backyard in privacy fence. Leave open the front and the massive side yard. The back can just be for the dogs.
The former meth/biker house has a screen up so they don't see my house
They have tired to set my backyard on fire at least 6 times I know of 3 my brother knows of 3 more. He thinks they poisoned that tree as it was healthy but declined very quickly one week last year. You can also see the weber that we have put though hell and still is chugging along

No I saw two snakes last year one in the street near the park the other sunning itself on the bikepath when I would walk to work. Both were bullsnakes. I have seen tons of lizards in the last two years. I feel one of the reasons is they packed a lot of houses in this housing area but they built it as they went since it as my brother said a game pre SimCity to whomever built this area
My niece has a long back yard that runs between several properties on the adjacent street. A few summers ago the neighbor at the back put up a temporary fence right through the back yard where my niece usually plays. When my sister asked them why they did it, they said, "we don't want kids running through our yard; this isn't China!"
First off their property didn't extend as far as they think it did, and second off my niece is biracial Chinese/Irish.
Luckily my brother in law is more patient than I am and he worked out a deal where they split the cost of a surveyor with the annoying neighbor. Of course the fence was 12 feet too far. That neighbor left town a few months later, which is probably for the best since every time I visited I was always itching for a confrontation.
