Hey look, they're still making Spider-Man movies!

9hmzurcb92w5.jpg

This time, Peter goes to Italy in a post-Thanos world, as one is want to do. In this tale of coming of age, the true Spider-Man is the friends we made along the way! He'll fight the mysterious FishBowl, pirate of the seven seas... But what awaits him at the bottom of the ocean? Only time will tell in this time travel epic, featuring Nicky Angry and Donnie Darko.

Wow they really gone and did an allusion to secret invasion and are gonna do SWORD.

  • klemmingklemming Registered User regular
RIP the only secret identity in the MCU movies, I guess.

I was feeling really smug about predicting that they weren't actually going with Hero Mysterio (Mysterhero?). Like, you guys do all know what he does, right? The multiverse story was a nice touch too, because they've already prepped the audience with the idea with Spider-Verse, even if it isn't canon to the MCU (and it could still be!), so it was a nice trick to play on the viewer.

That ending, though. Wow, dick move, Team Mysterio. What's the next movie that's actually going to address the fallout from this? Spider-Man being hated could be put on the backburner until the next S-M movie, but Peter being outed, framed, and known to possess a massive fleet of killer drones? He's going to be on the run from everyone until a wizard or a glowing lady from space can show up and vouch for him.

Okay, maybe a shape-shifting alien could help him out with that (they could at least let Peter Parker be seen at the same time as this guy sticking to walls), but the other stuff isn't going to be easy to clean up.

Disappointed that we never saw May's immediate reaction to her nephew being Spider-Man, I feel like that would have been worth seeing.

Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.

This now holds my top spot in the Spidermens movies.

Into the Spider-verse, while a great movie, felt like a love letter to the Spider-man fans.

Far From Home is, obviously, aimed at a more general audience. But the performances from everyone is top notch in my book. JB Smoove, for example, was killing it with almost every line he spoke. Zendaya as a nervous teen talking to her crush was fantastic. There's lots of little quips and jokes that don't hit the audience over the head that I enjoyed.

The ending (well, the mid credits stinger) got me wondering how it will play into the wider MCU.

    Yooooo this movie is good!

    And that JJJ stinger!

Is the secret identity reveal the most impactful stinger we've had in an MCU movie?

  • KharnorKharnor Registered User regular
This is exactly what I wanted from a Mysterio movie. Incredibly well done, especially that long illusion sequence. It's mind-boggling how many man-hours must have gone into that.

So, Flash at the airport. His mom not being there. What was that about? I feel like that was a loose thread for another time. Having a driver gives me Harry vibes.

I said it the SE++ thread, but the end credits stinger is what really made the movie for me. All film long I was a little annoyed with Fury. It felt like a caricature or impersonation of him, like SLJ was playing him just a little bit off. I was especially on high alert after in the introduction sequence, he said "he's not from your earth." The whole "don't invoke her name" with Captain Marvel was a little odd too.

But then we got that 2nd clip and holy hell, yes that was all intentional and god damn did SLJ do a good job committing to that the whole film.

Agreed - I feel like they're setting up Flash to be a quasi-Harry Osborne. Except instead of best friends they're rivals.

So where does everything go from here? What is the fall out from Parker’s reveal? What is this next Phase going to do? Why was Fury on that ship? What’s up with the Skrulls?

I was sad no tease of sinister six or any other Spidey stuff (minus Flash). I guess we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. Not sure what the Spidey contract situation is.

I don't think the mom thing was setting something up, unless his mom is a bad guy. I think that joke was that all the parents were so worried they came to get them, except Flash's mom who sent a driver.

I really liked it, the action was on point. That hallway scene with his Spidey Senses was really great. All the Mysterio effects were great really, top notch. As much as I liked Homecoming, this is 2x as good as that movie. Spidey had real character growth about learning who to trust, and not letting his responsibility cloud his judgement... Good stuff.

Also this movie featured the most suits (not counting Spiderverse of course) and I really wanted to see more of Tony's toolkit for making suits for him. I'm sure those holograms were nods to other suits, one looked like the Spider Armor.

Loved the movie. Did so many things perfectly.

Mysterio was on point. His theatrics, being the constant performer, but having a dangerous edge to him really worked.

Peter and MJ were adorably awkward together.

Also, Spider-Man probably gets beat up the most out of anyone in MCU doesn't he?

There were audible cheers when JK Simmons showed up and gasps at the identity reveal.

I think the biggest knock is that man, there is some BAD CG. We're talking PS2 era quality. I think the PS4 games had better looking scenes and hell, Raimi's Spider-Man too.

at least the CG can be handwaved away as being supposed to be CG

for its part, i didn't find anything as jarringly bad as say, some of the fight scenes in black panther

Shoutout to the "Nick Fury is actually The Chameleon" rumors for ... actually being half true? Maybe 1/4 true. Still, that was a nice reveal.

I don't mind the CG usually, but Spidey's suit looks really fake most of the time. I know it's easier to animate stuff like that rather than make the actors do it all, but why bother hiring Holland who seems to love doing flips, if you're gonna coat everything he does in a thick layer of CGI. It doesn't impact my enjoyment all that much, but any time you see a set photo of his real suit it looks so much better.

Like, other than the obvious seams on the suit, this looks better

Yeah I agree, none of it jumped out as being bad to me, especially compared to stuff like the end of Black Panther.

This was a pretty fun movie

Can we all just, take a second, and appreciate that MYSTERIO was the main villain?!? MYSTERIO!

    I love this world.

    edit:

Does anyone have any info on continued contracts between Marvel and Sony? Original contract was for 5 movies. And this made #5

The fact that it explicitly was CG in-universe means I wouldn't be surprised if that was intentional.

Another small detail I liked: during the attack in London, the Queen's Guard were firing back and actually took down a drone or two. I liked that they weren't shown as there as decoration. Silly hats aside, those are proper soldiers, their guns are loaded, and if the occasion presents itself, they will act like any soldier with a loaded gun would.

    Absolutely agree.

Mysterio faked his death, right? His last words are something like "as long as people believe it" and then he flops and bleeds to death after being fine enough to be standing a few seconds ago? Naaah, he pulled some shit.

He's gonna show up in a Sinister Six movie with no explanation. He'll try to monologue at Peter like "I bet you're wondering how I pulled it off!?" and Pete'll be like "nah? Not really"

Only CG I noticed looking off was the Iron Spider suit, which always looks off to me, I dunno.

    Oh brilliant

I really want to read an interview regarding the thought process for the mid credit scene.

Like was JK Simmons their only choice ever to play JJ, is it just a one time cameo, etc.

Also I remember thinking towards the end "Wait...there's still tons of people now that know Peter is Spider-Man" and them bam, mid credit.

I forget the love interest rival's name (Brad?), but I got Mr. Negative vibes from him for some reason. I could see that being a thing. Aged from the Blip, Parker/MJ embarrassed him.

Vulture, Scorpion, Mysterio, Mr. Negative(?), Prowler(?), Flash/Goblin(?). Is that our potential Sinister Six? I forget what happened to Shocker.

I really liked the movie. I was disappointed in two things though.

I really wanted Mysterio to be from an alternate Earth. I know about the character, so I wasn’t shocked by any means.

Also, “the blip” seems like it could have a better name.

  • redfield85redfield85 Registered User regular
I loved the blip. I love that they addressed "the snap" in their own terms.

I agree about Mysterio in that we 100% knew he was lying from the start. Would've been cool (and could still be a thing in the future - other Earths).

Any suggestions? I never saw any good names for it online after Endgame. People were just unsnapped, or de-dusted. Blip seems as good as anything.

I liked that they addressed the 'date of birth says that I'm 21, give me alcohol' thing as well. I bet there's a lot of legal loopholes that everyone was busy exploiting/fixing in the aftermath of that.
(including some about legal ages that are just gross to think about, thank you me for thinking of it)

The Mysterio helmet effect was pretty cool. If I had a helmet like that I'd wear it all the time.

I really like that Mysterio's real costume just looked like a Mocap suit. Sad that it didn't really seem to matter, since he didn't really seem to be able to fly at all. It looks like he just hopped into the illusion before it faded away so he could have his hero moment after the sparks fly.

Also it's a bit worrying that Tony trusted a teenager with a massive strike force of drones

Is that more or less worrying than firing up a random AI, building an army of drone suits that ended up threatening the world, or taking a 15-year-old kid into combat against multiple superpowered folks?

"Questionable use of assets" is practically the Stark family motto.

Yeah, Tony was always very blasé about giving lethal force to Peter, especially without clear instructions. Instant-kill Mode, anyone?

Those sorts of features need a few very explicit Continue Y/N? pop ups before they can be activated, though Peter does walk into it by continuing to use vague language. By now you'd think he'd learn to specify that the picture on the guys phone is a target, the guys brain matter is not.

Tony just never managed to recreate Jarvis' level of sarcasm and understanding.

To be fair to Tony on one point: the Instant Kill mode was locked behind the Training Wheels program. He just didn't expect Peter and his friend to hack the suit.

I don’t have a lot of great ideas, but Aside from just not being great in my opinion, calling it a “blip” seems to me that it diminishes what happened.

Sure, for the people that went away it felt like a blip, but for everyone else it was a 5 year experience.

Call it “the vanishing”, or “the great disappearance”, or “the Thanos event”, I’m not sure, but to me calling it a blip just doesn’t have enough weight behind it.

The whole point of the students on the CCTV program at the start was to look directly at the audience, winking, and say don't think too hard about it. The blip terminology I think is to mock "the snap" which you know, only the avengers would know it was a snap anyways.

Plus, it was just a high school news team report, not like an official news bulletin, so who knows what term the 'adults' in the world use. Silly kids yeeting their baes and what not...

It's probably still 'the decimation' or something dramatic.

Edit: Wait, nevermind, they had May using it and a few other people throughout the movie. But it was mostly with/around kids? I dunno.

Yeah, May uses it at the fundraiser for those affected. So it seems like blip is the term people generally use. Which is ok, I just don’t love it.

Ease of saying almost always trumps gravitas.
Terror attacks that kill dozens to thousands of people are reduced to a couple of numbers.

All it needed was some famous people online saying that everyone just blipped back, and the thing would snowball.
