COLLEGE FOOTBALL 2019: LSU wins, it's now the offseason, where nothing ever happens

ASimPersonASimPerson Cold...... and hard.Registered User regular
edited January 2020 in Social Entropy++
Hey kids that's right, we're right on the cusp of another season of America's most absurd major sport: college football!

Your Official Narratives for 2019:
- Does anyone other than Clemson or Bama realistically have a shot at the title?
- Is Texas back?
- Can those scrappy upstart Michigan Wolverines breakthrough and finish higher than third in the Big Ten East?
- Hey, remember that time Bama ran a fake field goal with the kicker as the lead blocker in the national championship game?
- Will Southern Cal start the season 0-6?
- More mysterious: that Kansas offered Les Miles the head coaching job, or that he took it?

This is where YOU come in! Help me fill in the rest of the narratives, and we'll see how they hold up as the season progresses!

In addition, as the subject alludes to, the SE++ College Football Thread Pick 'Em will be back for 2019! Once again @Nirya and I will pick the games and you'll pick the results (of those games).

I'll spice it up for y'all. For the Week 1 pick 'em, I will also allow you to submit your predicted Week 1 Playoff. I won't make you pick the seeds, so you just need to guess four teams. For each of your teams that appear in the playoff, you'll get 1 point. (Also, there won't be a Week 0 pick 'em.)

PICK 'EM RULES
Nirya and I will pick 10 games every week. We will not pick games that occur during the week, with one major exception: our rivalry week pickstravaganza that occurs every Thanksgiving. Each correct pick counts for one (1) point, except for one contest we designate as the GAME OF THE WEEK (GOTW), which is worth two (2) points. Though it's not usually the case, for all intents and purposes you should consider our picks to be arbitrary, because it's easier for everyone that way.

For games that are Against the Spread (ATS), we will designate a spread (or line) that is usually an average or thereabouts of whatever spreads I can find at the beginning of any particular week. Spreads will be in this format:
Utah State @ Nevada (-7)
This means that Nevada is favored by 7 points. If you pick Nevada, you are saying that they will win by at least 7 points. If the final score is Nevada 31, Utah State 24, picking Nevada wins and picking Utah State loses. If the final score is Nevada 30, Utah State 24, picking Nevada loses and picking Utah State wins. To reduce confusion on this point, I try to use half-points to make this clear (i.e., Nevada (-6.5)) as often as possible.

The playoffs are basically going to be:
    Alabama
    Clemson
Oklahoma (Hurts will do just fine keeping them rolling at QB)
    Georgia (mayyyyybe Michigan?)

    What am I missing

I don't know if you're making fun of UCF fans or got the colleges confused, but either way, I am shattered. SHATTERED.

Also Notre Dame will make it because [reasons].

Nah, I'm just a hopeless USF fan that likes to pretend we have a chance because we got all the way up to #2 awhile back before losing to Rutgers and going back to mediocrity.

I'm not sure we have a defense. Can throw the hell out of the ball though!

    Hope you guys are ready!

Any opinions on making all pick 'em games against the spread this season?

I have to admit the way we've been doing it the past couple of years, we usually just take any line that's less than a field goal and make those the straight up games unless we really needed to balance it one way or the other. (We pick the games before we look at the lines, usually.) Given that, I figure that having everything ATS doesn't effectively change anything.

  • SorceSorce Not ThereRegistered User regular
If you change it, whoever wins this year gets an asterisk after their name. Which is pretty on-brand for sports.

    I support it.

I like straight up picks when the line is very close, yes. It’s more fun that way

Big10 never covers because no one scores
Big12 always covers because no one plays defense

The second thing makes no sense.

Also Michigan is going to experiment with Big 12 football this year, I think.

The "Big 12 doesn't play defense" is extremely outdated except for basically Oklahoma

It's really all about pace. The Big 12 plays faster than every other conference and the Big Ten is waaaaaaay slower.

I mean its kind of a joke but its also how I do the pick em.

You don't get a lot of like, 70-55 scores outside the B12. Or at least thats my perception. I'm sure someone has done the stats.

The Fullcast crew is all still there, and they've been saying for weeks that USC is going to start 0-6, so you're in good hands.

I will end up doing the pick 'em no matter what, though I do prefer having a split between straight up and ATS, if only because I prefer the variety in consideration when making picks.

I like the mix as well personally. It keeps things somewhat interesting. I can't accurately explain why but having it all one way or another would seem weird to me. I would play it either way though.

The more I care about a game, the more I want it to be straight up.

The less I care, the more I want it to be ATS

They dramatically underrate the odds of Army beating Michigan. That game terrifies me. Good triple option team vs. a whole bunch of question marks on the defensive line, especially in run defense? No thanks.

And Army covering is a gimme.
