can you imagine a panel in the comics though
where one of the main characters just gets comically donked over the head with a spanner to conveniently resolve an encounter

If there was a somewhat gruesome spray of blood, maybe a crunch sound effect, and it was Rorshach delivering a punchline with it, yes.
    Maybe a Hrmm

    Hmmmmm

While I enjoyed the episode (and the whole series), a few nitpicks...
    1. Abar becoming a blue god. Does not quite feel in character, and also "absolute power corrupts absolutely" as was pointed out earlier in this thread. I was pretty certain her grandfather was turning out to have inherited Manhattans power (stove scene earlier).
    2. Triue claiming to have to look through "the galaxy" when SURELY all she possibly could have done is scanning the solar system /nermode
    3. Abar just passively watching dr Manhattan being vacuumed without at least trying to punch Triue in the face and taking control over the Manhattan-vacuuming machine.

This was a very good season of television, and I'm happy it happened.

When's the Snyder cut of it coming out?

i think the show peaked with 'this extraordinary being.'
for most of this episode i was just trying to figure out if angela actually had any agency at all in the series

i did like the opening of this episode. when veidt got rolled out of his superman capsule encased in gold i was sure that trieu had only saved him for her home decor. now that would have been an undignified end for ozymandias. after he got thawed out though i think the show had run out of surprises for me.

lots of possible threads were never made good on. cyclops were made to look pathetic in the wake of trieu and i think that's a problem. but trieu was also reduced to much less than her previously-characterised self. like a julius caesar, benevolent but ambitious and arrogant. her political purpose was reduced to nothing; vietnam's independence forgotten. i'm guessing the ultimate plan for the world clock was changed for pragmatic purposes - i found it a cop-out. too many balls in the air, too little time. maybe she just wants to be manhattan too. people will like that.

all that thematic stuff about time? nothing to see here. the watch batteries were just important for the cage.

angela is dr. manhattan now. you could see the blue in the reflection of her feet. sure, taking on that incredible power will manifest itself most obviously in the ability to walk on water (?). which i suppose is fine. but i just thought she could have drunk the egg in a beer like cal did last episode.

i think, of all things, that she didn't drink the egg in a beer is my greatest disappointment

i do think it was a good series.
Yours is a much better idea for the egg, but I was kind of expecting her to find that it was hardboiled as confirmation that it had been altered.

  • Atlas in ChainsAtlas in Chains Registered User regular
I think the final scene is a problem all around.
Why is it ok for Angela to eat the egg? She's no saint, she's another masked vigilante.
The badge doesn't stop her from doing whatever the hell she feels like doing. And aside from that, I'm not sure the Angela we watched all season would just eat the egg on the spot. And finally,
the dude said make an omelette, so make a fucking omelette. Follow that guy's instructions to a T, just in case, after you watched unfiltered Manhattan turn a man into soup.

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
I think the message to be taken is
that Angela has realized that while she can't be Sister Night and the horrible baggage it brings, Jon was too passive and could have done more with his powers to help the world.

It is what her conversations with Will were about, as well as Ozy's final words to the Gamekeeper. Masks make men cruel and no one can heal while wearing one

But just standing by when people are being treated how they have been when you could have the power to stop it isn't an option either

So she is going to be Angela Abar, but wield her husband's gifts in service of those who don't have any themselves

Loved the episode all around, but agree on the ending re: Ozymandias
Once Mirror Guy got zapped to Antarctica along with them, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I definitely thought he would end up doing what Rorschach never could and fuck up the works somehow, but he never really seemed too conflicted with what was happening, and even though he did get to bonk him on the head it did feel like kind of a wet fart end for him.

i mean i think it was ok
for angela to eat the egg in the end because she never really sought out grand power, as opposed to keene and trieu. that was clear enough from ozy's speech - great power cannot be entrusted to those who seek it

you could also argue there are a lot of other kinds of people who shouldn't get great power also. like those who are willing to snap human fingers like twigs for information...

angela's violent streak was never really addressed

    Honestly I like that
Angela had flaws that were not addressed

    She did some heinous shit!

She isn't a moral paragon, but she wants to be a better person. Whether or not that works...who knows!

But an imperfect person trying to do what's best for the world with no clear answer as to how that's gonna go seems right in line with Watchmen as a narrative foundation

    Regarding masked police officers:
After the squid rain ends and the Abars are coming out of the theater, the cops aren't wearing masks anymore, and Red Scare and Pirate Jenny actually look like they're helping people instead of beating the hell out of them. It ties back to Veidt and what he says about masks.

    RE: Angela and That Ending.
It's also worth noting that when Angela confronts the primary drivers of the story - Keene, Trieu, and Will - without the mask on, her reactions to each of them change drastically.

Sister Night beat the literal piss out of a Kavalry sympathizer; Angela puts her gun down in the hopes Keene and the 7K will listen to her.

Sister Night disregards Trieu and considers an obstacle to her real goal - figuring out what Will wants. Angela hears her out and susses out that she's the real threat based on her behavior and her grandstanding.

Sister Night tells Will to fuck off; Angela accepts him into her life.

It's also worth noting how Angela and Will react to their kids finding out about their alter-egos; Will tries to scrub it off Marcus, and Angela seems to be talking it out with Topher when we leave them.

Angela's fallible, but going off her track record, she at least seems to be a better fit for godlike power than a solid 90 percent of the other candidates.

also, the line from the ep was
that nobody who seeks out godlike power should ever get it; angela doesn't seek it out and has spent most of her relationship with john/cal actively suppressing it. That makes her the best candidate to get it, at least according to the episode's logic.

I did think there should've been more of a payoff though; like maybe the camera pulls skyward and we see her standing in the center of the pool, or something

I will say this re: Angela, and I’m not sure I’m articulating myself well but eff it this show is too good
others have pointed out that she never sought out godlike power, so therefore she is a better candidate for it. This is true, however it should also be noted that Jon did not give her his powers. He didn’t even ask her. He laid out clues over a lifetime to lead her to a choice

Manhattan could perceive a lot but he was always bound to his own perspective in time, he didn’t know what would happen after he died. He didn’t know if Angela would eat the egg or not

The choice, divorced from any further influence from him, is part of the gift

cinematically it wasn't really presented as moment of choice though.
if it were you'd end on the climax of the choice. not whether the choice was meaningful or not.

Part of why the ending works so perfect for me as is
and wouldn't have if something like this had happened instead, is because of how the comic ends. It focuses on the publisher's hand hovering over Rorschach's journal

Whether you consider it definitive/ambiguous or not despite the clues given, whether in the show or comic, it always ends mid-moment. Lindelof even says that felt like a good place to end a Watchmen story in his interview with Hollywood Reporter. What happens next wouldn't be as memorable

    Disappointments:
Portraying torture as an effective way to get information, twice. Genius as some kind of inheritable/genetic trait.

Things that had me hooting and hollering:
How long Trieu had the Veidt statue just standing around in that entirely unnecessary pose. Momentarily thinking Angela would just flop into the pool when it transpired she hadn't gotten Doc's powers (and possibly showing Will having gotten them way before). Lube man never reappearing/being mentioned.

  • Styrofoam SammichStyrofoam Sammich WANT. normal (not weird)Registered User regular
Its not actually clear how long Veidt is a statue, but Trieu hates him so keeping him around as furniture for a bit makes sense anyway. The pose is meant to be mocking.

I would have had more fun hate watching this if there weren't brief moments of good tv show in amongst the Damon Lindelof flavored garbage. They might have made a good story if it they hadn't based it on Watchmen. Oh well. At least it was more neatly executed than anything else that guy has done.

I think episode 8 was my favourite but everything with

My only criticism was that the ending felt slightly rushed? Like everyone's big plan was revealed and then defeated in 30 minutes.

It is possible to express a negative opinion without being condescending to people who enjoy it. It ain't a "For Fans Only" thing, it's basic courtesy and empathy. It's rude anywhere to burst into a positive conversation with, "The thing you like is dumb and bad, actually" - that this is the internet does not mean modes of human interaction no longer apply.

It is a really weird, not-great look to say something intentionally provocative and antagonistic, then play the martyr when people (very gently!) push back against that.
