TV Shows

Ok, so I dont watch a huge amount of general TV. We tend to pick shows and follow them:

24
Heroes
Lost
Prison Break
West Wing
BSG
Deadwood
etc.

So, now Heroes, Lost and 24 are wrapping up - and I'm at a loss.
I watched Drive, until they pulled the plug - I only just heard about Jericho, but have now heard that they've killed that too.

I'm thinking of throwing the West WIng in again (Up to season 3 now) and maybe looking into the Shield.

My Question is what would you suggest?
To Give some guides, I guess we like dramas. I've seen firefly... I've heard about Verinica Mars, but I cant quite get myself to watch a teen drama. Noir or no.
Help!

    The Shield, hands down.

Veronica Mars is also really good. And calling it a Teen Drama is an insult, it isn't 90210 by any stretch of the imagination.

The Shield is probably the best television to come along since the Sopranos. But start from the beginning, or you’ll miss out on a lot of important stuff that gets brought up later with no explanation.

You've already listed almost every good drama on television. I don't see any comedies on the list, so I suppose Arrested Development and The Office are out of the question?

You might like Rome, it was a great HBO mini-series. Unfortunately, the DVDs are quite expensive.

Hmm. Rome. We visited Rome recently (I'm wondering whether the other half will buy into it... I know I'd enjoy it) I might look into the Office (I have the english ones).

The shield - check. (I actually have the 1st season, but I'd watch it through again so she doesn't miss anything)
Veronica Mars... I might see if I can source the 1st ep to see if it grabs us.

    Thanks guys, keep 'em coming!

    FREAKS AND GEEKS

    It's so awesome.
They only did one season, AND IT WAS AWESOME.
It's not really a "drama" per se, but it was a really great show.

    Carnivale is excellent.
While not a drama, I've gotta recommend some Alias.

Freaks and Geeks was a guilty pleasure.
Carnivale seemed slow. Was it? Any more on Ailias? It always seemed a little "Buffy-esque" for my tastes... Or was it quite good?

    Dexter.

Oh please please please, watch Dexter. One of the best dramas I've ever seen.

    Rome is pretty good, too.

Arrested Development is the best comedy out there...but yes, it's a comedy.

    House?

    HUFF

I just started watching it. It's the most addicting drama I've watched in a looooooooong long time.
Plus it's got Hank Azaria as the main character. +++++

    Yeah, House!

Sunday lunchtime with a tuna mayonnaise baked potato. Got the flat all cleaned and the weekly shopping in and now we can just sit here and eat our potatos and watch us some House.

House house house, so good it'll give you Lupis.

Carnivale was slow, but got very awesome towards the end.

Alias built in a good bit of drama over its run with murder of friends and family, a good bit of betrayal and betrayal that turned out not to be, etc. I never watched Buffy, other than the original movie, so I can't compare it to that but while Alias is no 24 it wasn't nearly as silly and such as the Buffy movie was.

    My List:

    Dexter
    The Nine
    Veronica Mars
    Thief
    Carnivale
Sleeper Cell - is there a second series?
    Traveler

Anyone know about these - a lot are down in name only, indicating that I wish to look into them more. Hate one? Tell us please. Know if one has been cancelled already? Argh!

The first two seasons of Alias are quite entertaining and have some good plot twists, I enjoyed it. As Jimmy King said, not quite 24, but decent espionage-type action.

I felt that about midway through the third season the show got a bit stale, but it's definitely worth checking out.

Well, the first season was very well received by audience and critics alike. A second season is definitely on its way and it is loosely based on a series of books that is still being published - so there is always fresh material at hand.

No one I have shown it to has disliked it; the cinematography is excellent and so are the individual performances.

You just need to watch the opening to see an example of how good it is.

I suspect a lot of people felt that way as they made some major changes in either season 3 or 4.
SD-6 gets shut down. Sloan goes through some changes, eventually realizing that he fucked up and makes an honest attempt to be good. Some other stuff.

After that the show overall was mostly the same, but added a bit of "who's really the bad guy and who's actually good?" type stuff.

The Riches, which is a new show just ending its first season on FX, was pretty damn good. It's executive produced by Eddie Izzard (and also features him as an actor).

I'd expect it to be out on DVD fairly soon.

Also, The Venture Bros. is one of the best comedies to come out in the past several years. It's a cartoon, but it's amazing.

Yes to both of these. Eddie Izzard is amazing, and the Riches is really good. Additionally, Venture Brothers is the best thing Adult Swim has ever been a part of.

May as well complete the FX Drama hat-trick and throw out Nip/Tuck. I'm squeamish by nature, so the surgery is kinda ugh to watch... but seriously, this show is like Jerry Springer on crack laced with heroin.

    By which I mean, good.

I second that, I'd also go with the aforementioned House, Rome, and Veronica Mars. Heroes and the Shield are highly reccommended as well.

Has anyone reccommended Weeds yet? It's a hilarious show I think on showtime and the second season just wrapped up. It's pretty funny but there's also those definite tense moments. I mean, she's a housewife who's a drug dealer afterall....

I'm not sure if you're a big CSI fan, but the new one in NY is actually pretty interesting--completely unrealistic, but really really cool.

The Shield. And those DVDs are worth it.

Nip/Tuck ain't bad in a trashy, soap opera way. I didn't watch the last season though.

I like House a lot but goddamn if every episode isn't the same. I read an article recently titled something like "10 things that TV shows should change" (Article is here. . Hey, I was close...)and the writer compared House plots to Scooby Doo plots.

    He kinda has a point.

Bullshit. As soon as the show stops being about medical situations is when it becomes Grey's Anatomy, and I stop watching. A new take on the medical genre doesn't mean you abandon the genre. House is good because Hugh Laurie is an excellent actor, yes, but also because each plot is quite interesting. Why do you think he is so bored in the clinic, where he can diagnose illnesses in seconds?

Besides CSI & CSI:NY (I can't watch Miami anymore... not after I saw this vid - Danger - will cause CSI:Miami dislike), the other series I like that might fit the bill for you is "Dead Like Me", which only ran for two seasons, but is quite excellent.

And I think Gilmore Girls is an excellent show that hasn't been mentioned. It's something I didn't think I'd like at all, but I'll be damned if the stream of pop culture references isn't humorous. Plus it's something the lady friends are excited to watch with you.
