George Floyd was murderered by police on Monday. Protesters clashed with police on Tuesday and Wednesday. As of Thursday, the mayor has requested that the national guard be deployed, and has called for the arrest of the four police officers who murderered George Floyd.
I assume this is quite good and informative, I was up till o'darkthirty watching the Unicorn Riot livestream which I can garuntee is quite good and should get some sort of award or somethin
part of why this has gotten where it is? police were so over aggressive in the first few hours that they've run out of the less-lethal ammo (primarily gas grenades and black glass balls) but thankfully haven't escalated further
remember as more news and/or footage from this comes out: corporate and state media both have a vested interest in making the rioters look monstrous
It’s going to be tough to make it look worse than the video we’ve all seen of the cop crushing Floyd’s neck with his knee while people were yelling at him that Floyd was dying
I mean, it's really easy to never show that and instead only show the very worst instances of perceived violence from the protesters, even if those instances have to be intentionally provoked by the cops
it's beyond easy to show whatever you want when you control all of the media
Not that I have a problem with autozones burning down but if an autozone or autozone type establishment near you catches fire please stay the flying fuck away from it due to the notoriously awful combination of poison and explosions
Do you like my photos? The stupid things I say? The way I am alive? You can contribute to that staying the same through the following link
yeah, cops are like priests; when they make a "mistake," they just get shuffled around to a new job in a different area. Unless they actually go to prison.

Apparently protesters near the murderer's house were able to levy some classic siege tactics last night - he kept trying to order delivery food and whenever a car would drive up they would tell the driver who he was delivering to and the driver would leave.
Like, would we see any major differences in day to day without a police force? Or at least a diminished and completely disarmed police force? Cause it seems like when they actually have to do any sort of policing that doesn't involve cool Call of Duty gear or killing black people they kinda suck at their job. But I don't have numbers or anything.

what? no. cops are good for all sorts of things, it's just when they're bad, they're the worst.
At the very least cops shouldn't carry guns, but also good luck implementing that policy when there are at least half a million fuckhead cops in the US who would literally riot if someone tried to take away their easiest way to murder people.
Like, I'm trying to imagine a city actually instituting a "no guns on duty" policy, and the only result I can even imagine happening is "armed cops take over city hall, city leadership backs down"

Theoretically yes. There are a bunch of different models that could work instead.
Practically, it becomes a lot more difficult. Both in terms of like, no politician in the country would do it/police unions are too powerful/all that sort of stuff, and in terms of culture - that sort of structural change would be a dramatic alteration for literally every one in the country, and a lifetime of pro-police education and ingrained practices would make it extremely difficult for, in the absence of cops, someone not to invent them.

they're not even good at the things we supposedly keep them around for
guys I get that these (and many!) cops are terrible and murderers, but domestic violence, murders, drunk driving, robbery, etc. etc. etc. are still things, and I somehow doubt they'd all go away if we 'got rid of cops'

Don't look up the statistics of those crimes cross-referenced with police officers.

you don't get rid of cops, you get rid of cops. Fix them with cement galoshes or just line them up, whatever, I'm not picky
The problem with police in the US is symptomatic of the deeper structural issues there. Addressing those issues would address a lot of issues with US policing and also create a society with a different idea of what policing should be
Yeah like, it just seems to me, like looking at our massive backlog of rape kits for instance, we pay these dudes to basically play GI Joe and then go home and beat their families. So like, maybe we don't abolish cops we just take away all of their toys and only allow the extent of their authority to be getting cats out of trees. We can keep the hyper specialized units like SWAT or whatever who you'd need for actual serious crimes, but your average beat cop? Nah fam you don't get a gun and maybe they all get bicycles instead of squad cars.

Truly wooly on the ground, can't fuckin imagine whatll transpire this evening

I hate to say the only thing surprising is that the cops got fired
(I'm sure at least three of them will be reinstated if not all four)
what a shitty shitty world.
In a system that values capital over human life the cry that yells the loudest is property damage.

They killed a person, they need to be arrested.

or is that what the national guard is for, to arrest the murderer because the cops won't arrest their own?
The mayor does not in themselves have the unilateral authority to have someone arrested.
yeah he can put pressure on police leadership but they can tell him to pound sand if they want
usually this is for the best but police are scum so...
There’s apparently a chitauri battalion’s worth of cops standing guard outside his house
Holding Chauvin in custody is the cheapest and best play for everyone, he should be begging for it

don't be ridiculous
they'll happily arrest cops who give evidence against other cops

Seems like it’d be cheaper to keep him in a nice, safe jail cell.

domestic violence in particular needs social workers, not cops, at least forty percent of whom are themselves domestic abusers
