Ambient music

I like to write with ambient music in the background, but so far all I've got that's suitable is Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol. II-- everything else I try is too disruptive. Anyone wanna suggest me some other light, soothing ambient music to write to?

Lemon Jelly, Cinematic Orchestra, Some of Amon Tobins down tempo stuff, Royksopp, Mr Scruff, and the Ninja Cuts albums are all Ambient/"trip hop" albums that I study too. Lemon Jelly Being my favorite. Also, Thievery Corporation.

    Edit: Also also, Exploding Plastix.

I guess I should clarify; I listen to and like a lot of the stuff that you guys've suggested (Mezzanine, Sigur Ros, Cinematic Orchestra, Thievery Corp) but it's still too distracting. I'm looking for something really similar to SaW II, with no vocals, no bassline, and no real melody, music that's just sort of be there without derailing my train of thought.

You can't discuss Ambient music without referring to Brian Eno - who created the stuff and is still alive and producing all sorts of great things today.

check out his "music for a films" albums

and check out this while you're at it

Very nice music to just chill out/work to etc.

Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai come to mind as well. Also check out Yndi Halda - although their songs can get a bit disruptive - especially during the climaxes of the songs - but still check them out anyway.

I don't have a lot of Ambient CDs, but I really liked Eluvium's CD, Copia. Some tracks feel a little unnatural, but others, like Repose in Blue, are just incredible when I think of how organic they feel.

    Rollo - Pinhole
Beautiful ambient guitar stuff from Atsuo of the legendary Japanese band Boris, one of my top 25 records from this year.
    Byla - Byla
    More awesome ambient guitar.
Mono - Travel in Constants Vol. 22
Kind of post-rocky ambient goodness, another Japanese outfit.
Blueneck - Scars of the Midwest
AWESOME terrifying ambient/post-rock/metal goodness, can't stress enough how incredible this record is. The fact that I've talked to one of the band members at length makes it even more special to me.
Mogwai - Come On Die Young
    Just get this.
Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People
    Just get this too.

Also, all Boards of Canada. Not truly ambient I guess but still something you should have.

Not sure if you're into dark ambient, but [especially] Raison D'Etre, Noctis, some Burzum [Hlidskjalf, Filosofem], Darkspace, Vinterriket, Diagnose: Lebensgefahr (not dark ambient per se but in the ballpark, delightlyfully creepy), Trist, and many more I'm probably forgetting. That should be plenty for you though.

I was just about to come back and post this as well its very creepy D:

eluvium is like explosions in the skys and such but they are actually chillout in the sense that they dont build up over the whole song, which doesnt let you chill much when the end of the song is blasting in your ears

    also listen to this guy:
    http://workbench-music.com/

if you like it his cds have a LOT of the same feel, but has enough variation that it should keep you good for a lot of sessions of needed chillout

Steve Roach and/or Vidna Obmana make for some good, earthy ambient music.

I must say that seeing ambient music performed live is one of the most confusingly awesome things ever.

As he said early Mortiis is incredibly fascinating fantasy themed ambient. The Crypt and the Wizard would be the best album.

Aye, Cold Meat and Cyclic Law are the biggest dark ambient labels out there, and all their artists are amazing. My favourite is Northaunt, who uses nature sounds such as grinding ice to create some awesome atmospheres. Some of his stuff can be disruptive, though, such as having people talking or crying every now and then. Raison d'Etre is a classic dark ambient artist that you really have to check out.

Bohren & der Club of Gore is ambient jazz, extremely chill music. Toshinori Kondo's album Ki-oku is also great jazz for studying. He has a chill nu jazz/electronica style. http://www.myspace.com/toshinorikondo.

The Noble label has some interesting classical/electronica blends. Piana is very mellow stuff, somewhat like Sigur Ros done by a Japanese woman. Another of the artists that you should check out is World's End Girlfriend.

All the suggestions so far are good, especially the post-rock bands.

Post-Rock/Instrumental Rock is different to Ambient music. Quite a few of the suggestions in here are totally lost on the OP. Unless he intended to include Post-Rock in his description.

Post-Rock bands in this thread include:
    Sigur Ros
    This Will Destroy You
    Mono
    Mogwai
    65daysfostatic (Math Rock really)
    Sun 0))) (Drone metal really)
    Boris (Also drone metal)

Indeed, and post-rock is often not ambient in the slightest. Sigur Ros and Mogwai in particular are often extremely loud. Although if we do wish to include post-rock, then I'd suggest Godspeed You! Black Emperor too.

The Timewriter's Jigsaw Pieces is a great piece of work. It's house, but extremely chilled and laid back. Highly recommended.

    Sigur Ros.... Takk. Yes, please.

Godspeed is great, but I'm not sure if they would fit for the background music thing you're looking for.

Godspeed is one of the bands I use to concentrate, when I'm reading or studying. Also, Massive Attack was mentioned earlier and Mezzanine in particular would fit in the OPs description of what he wants. Dead Can Dance also might be looking into. Really good music to listen to when you want to relax/focus.
