The [2020 Elections] Are A Thing

BogartBogart Streetwise HerculesRegistered User, Moderator Mod Emeritus
OP copied from the last one.

This here is your official thread for discussing the great basket of wonder and joy that is the upcoming 2020 election.

What You Can Talk About:

- Any national or local 2020 US election.
- The impact of the conventions that just happened.
- The policy platforms of candidates AS THEY PERTAIN TO THE ELECTIONS. "Biden plans to roll out a public option" is okay. "A public option is awesome because of X,Y, and Z" is not.
- Polls related to the election.
- Voting outreach efforts
- Other things that directly pertain to the 2020 election and have not been explicitly banned.

What You Can't Talk About:

- The 2020 primaries that have already occurred. Upcoming 2020 primaries, if there are any left, are okay.
- Bernie Sanders
- 20-motherfucking-16
- Hillary Fucking Clinton
- Policy in general. This is not the place to discuss health care or taxes or policing in general. We have threads for all those things! If not, feel free to make one!
- Who you plan to personally vote for. Nothing good has ever come from a conversation in these threads about why you're definitely voting for Biden / voting third party / not voting. Just rest assured that your personal reasons for voting are the best in the whole world and everyone agrees with you and thinks you're smart and good looking. Masterfully done, you.

If you have previously been banned from this thread, you are still banned from this thread, sorry. Rest assured you can participate in discussions when 2024 rolls around, assuming elections are still a thing that exists in that far away time.

HEY! LISTEN! Some bright spark had the excellent notion to link the resources thread from SE++ for people who are having a hard time, so:

If you're having a tough time of it in these testing times, here are some resources that can help.

As the last post in the last thread, I just want to bring over the strange satisfaction of watching a Vanderbilt dunk on Trump.

Received my FL absentee ballot this past weekend and immediately filled it out and mailed it back. Hopefully a month should be enough.

I didn't know Florida has a raise minimum wage amendment on the ballot this year. Amendment 2 is a wall of text but they helpfully bold the part that says that if the minimum wage goes in effect your taxes may go up to adjust and because of the FL constitution requiring a balanced budget.

It's insane that he's denying and lashing out about the NY Times report when 4 years ago he bragged about not paying taxes and how it made him smart.

The assholes that love him already accepted that argument, why not run with it?

The dude's got a lot of insecurities, but not actually being rich is the big one - look at his Comedy Central roast when it was the only thing off limits. The tantrums he's been throwing behind closed doors about this are probably going to get three whole chapters in the next tell all book of Trump's Whitehouse and probably the one after that too.

Contemplate this on the Tree of Woe

I am kind of amazed at the number of books published about what goes on behind the scenes all telling basically the same story. As this did not happen to any other administration.

    It is not surprising he is this bad at handling money [he ran casinos into the ground}

I just want a reporter or someone to say “if the reports are wrong then why don’t you release just any part of your taxes that prove it? Like not even the whole thing, just any one page that contradicts reporting”

But hell just scream fake news or say that he’ll do it after the election or that the deep state is faking and there’s no way in hell im watching this debate

the question is will anyone let him leverage any portion of his remaining billion to pay off any of these existing loans

He'll just say the same excuse as always, he's being audited so he can't. And his believers will continue to believe it.

You can't shame this man, all you can do is motivate people to vote.

It's going to re-open discussions on Kennedy's son and Kavanaugh's debts, when the GOP is trying to build support for their next SCOTUS pick.

The article cites two Senate debates, which is a pretty reasonable amount. Three is probably typical in a close race (Iowa and Montana have three total scheduled) and NM is not particularly close. The Republican wants more because he needs Lujan to fuck up in a high profile way to have a shot, and more debates means more chances.

I am unsure just how much I want to watch tonight. It will probably be the most 'friendly' moderation Trump will get, but it will still be a train wreck. And then there is the chance he just loses it on live TV.

    You're muckin' with a G!

I have not actually listened to Trump speak since like...the third debate four years ago. Not sure if I want to break that streak or not.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

I'm going to power through it with as many tools as I can: PSA group thread, the forum debate thread or this thread, depending on how much the mods hate themselves, discord talk with my friends, maybe some alcohol.

I'm not there for Trump. I'm there to see Biden kick his ass.

it's not like Trump will ever concede a point or say anything coherent or outline any policy idea he will actually follow through on that we don't already know about

there is nothing to learn from a debate and holding one is basically a formality in deference to tradition at this point

the only outcome that could possibly matter would be Biden making a gaffe

I'm going to watch the debate because I want to get a sense of who Biden is to represent him when phone canvassing. As for his opponent, I hope the ground swallows him up in front of the TV cameras so I don't have to listen to his whiny voice and watch his smug face.

What a Day was saying this morning that 44% of respondents in a poll said the debate wouldn't change their minds, which is super high.

I don't think I'm going to be tuning in tonight for the live debate. I just don't think it'd be good for my anxiety at all, so I'm more than likely just going to bury my head in the sand and either sleep or game or something to get past it and hope to all the gods above that Biden doesn't royally fuck up tonight when there's so much riding on this. I mean, I think Joe is going to wipe the floor with him, but at the same time, it's only going to take one fuck-up and it solidifies all the attacks the Republicans have launched about his mental state.

There is a hell of a lot riding on this whole thing tonight, though, so I'm just hoping things don't go pear-shaped on us.

If it helps your anxiety, the highest likelihood outcome is the debate inspires a monumentally stupid Cilizza article and changes nothing about the race

    You know, just another Tuesday

I'm planning on watching tonight and not even sure why. I already voted and even if I hadn't it's not like anything either one could do would possibly change my vote.

I mostly expect it to be frustrating and infuriating, but at the same time this is the first time in four years Trump will be forced to face anything but a friendly audience with no way to back out or walk away. I think there is a legitimate chance that he's forgotten how to handle it and we end up getting a full on 'for the ages' temper tantrum when he's faced with someone pushing back at him, and I don't want to miss the chance at the catharsis of seeing that.

Even if it doesn't change anything, even if it doesn't matter, and even if it is mostly going to be me getting shitfaced and posting in tonight's update thread / Discord I just feel like I need this because of the possibility of watching Trump step on a rake on live TV.

There’s like 9% undecided across all polls of likely voters and lots of people have voted already

This poll exists for the media to huff its own farts about this, a media event, not an election event

Yup. Maybe not that high, but definitely up there.

If you don't factor in the 36-42% of dyed in the wool Trump voters that would still select Trump even if he shat on the bible while killing puppies, that means that almost every remaining voter is going to watch the debate with an open mind?

    Yeah, that's not realistic.

Are these really dyed in the wool Trump voters or just people who will vote Republican, no matter what? I know, I know - Trump is the party and all that. But I get the distinct impression, if Biden wins clearly enough, the GOP will try to throw Trump in a deep memory hole and move on with their "normal" grift and all. And come next election after this one - they won't lose as much people voting for them, because Trump isn't there anymore.

I am rambling a bit. What I am trying to say, I don't really know how many really true believers are out there when it comes to Trump specifically.
