Guardian Tales is a classically styled adventure game in the spirit of A Link to the Past. While exploring stages, you'll encounter combat, puzzles, easter eggs and one hell of a well told story. It's technically a follow-up to a game called Dungeon Link, which isn't around anymore. Guardian Tales released in February 2020 and in that time has quickly become my favorite mobile game.
You play the Guardian, a knight of Kanterbury. With the Little Princess and a group of recruits by your side, you'll explore a variety of worlds in order to push back the Invaders and uncover the mysteries of planet everbody lives on.
Combat is action-oriented, with boss fights that can get pretty crazy. Puzzles that you'll encounter range from block puzzles, button puzzles, bomb puzzles and beyond, and the devs aren't afraid to mix things up in order to keep the game feeling fresh. The current XMas-related event has a bullet-hell shmup stage where a were-deer pilots a rocket-powered sled while a remixed version of Jingle Bells plays in the background. This game is obviously a labor of love by the devs and it shows through with each new event.
This game is a double gacha. There are character banners and weapon banners, and a character becomes much stronger if you get their exclusive weapon, but the devs have done a pretty good job of tweaking the system. You'll generally want to pull primarily on the character banners because duplicate pulls will give you hero crystals which you can use to limit break your characters. Weapons in this game range from 1-5 stars, and you can evolve weapons with gold to increase their star level. Once they reach 4 stars, they can be broken down into magic metal which can be used to get exclusive weapons without needing to do weapon pulls. As you pull, you'll also earn mileage tickets, 300 of which can be used to buy a character or weapon of your choice. They'll also periodically hold mileage events where summons will grant additional mileage tickets. The devs are also very generous with gems and free pulls.
Guardian Tales is also very respectful of your time. Once you finish the first chapter, you unlock a town where you can start accruing guardian points. As your level increases, you unlock the ability to sweep stages. Other mobile games may give out skip tickets, but once you unlock a stage's sweep option, you can just instantly clear stages. As you get stronger, the amount of time grinding resources actually decreases. I reached guardian level 176 this week and I'm able to do this for just about any kind of grinding stage in the game now. I know that the time required to do any grinding in other mobile games has kept me from playing them, so this was a welcome update when it hit.
Guardian Tales has a guild function, but at this time it doesn't do much other than give access to guild raids, which are just community boss fights that provide guild members extra rewards when someone kills one. It also has PVP in the form of AI driven colosseum fights and player-controlled arena fights. They're pretty painless and are a great source of free gems every week.
Give it a shot, but don't do it for me.
Do it for her.

I read a bit about that. Is it one ten pull per day? Or just all at once?
Story's pretty decent so far, and it's got some interesting variations on quests compared to other gacha. Like the one where you have to escort a vampire to the exit of the level while periodically glancing back at her otherwise she'll attack and make you redo the quest. Or the one where you race a horde of other adventurers for slime beauty product, use a ton and turn into a slime yourself, then fight off the adventurers trying to make skin cream out of you.
Any super newbie mistakes I should avoid making that might sound good at the time but are very bad? I did already spend 300 magic metal for another 5* weapon because I didn't see any other use for it and the lure of gacha is strong. I'm also wondering if I have enough time to get through the event roadmap for free Future Princess crystals.
I managed to get Future Princess too, and I've gotten Nine-Tailed Fox and the Mecha which is pretty great. I'm planning on putting all my pulls from here on out into a healer since that's really all I'm missing at this point.
Managed to pull a Nari with daily summon and once I had the currency I pulled on Movie Rider Eugene's banner because she's a biker with a sword, and she popped out with no issues at all. Now I think I'm going to save currency and think about who I should go for next.
If you don't pull Miya, who is the only 3* healer so far, don't worry too much about healing. All the 2* characters are free from the story, and several of them are serviceable healers.
Oh, and you might want to double-check that vampire quest. If you click on a stage, you can see if a quest is considered completed.
Oh, and join a guild as soon as you can. It gives you access to a hunch more free gems from attendance checks and guild raids. No multiplayer, yet, so you don't need to worry about being social.
And yeah I joined a guild as soon as I could because free bonuses.
- New: Multiplayer mode : 4 players co-op to clear a dungeon !
- New: skins for weapons
- More battle medals : 2 battle medals given per match in Colosseum either win or loss (no battle medal farming anymore). Arena matches don't give medals per match anymore, but at end of the week as a tier reward. More battle medal given in guild raid as well apparently.
- New: "stat change stone" : To change one stat of an equipment without rerolling the other stats. Or maybe the contrary, to lock one stat (or more) and reroll the other ones.
- New: short story and Roadmap event, so certainly a new hero.
These devs are cranking out good content and QoL updates at a pretty fast pace.
Starting to hit a wall with combat in this game. There is apparently a dodge but as far as I'm seeing it only lasts a split second and there's a cooldown, so I'm getting smacked by big heavy attacks that cover half the arena and I'm only closing up World 5, so little over halfway through.
Free roll the other day gave me Plitvice so I'm kinda annoyed because I was already on track to getting her from Heavenhold and just had a little bit left to go. Supposedly this gets me 50 crystals though so there's some consolation prize. Working on getting more points so I can grab FP stones from this roadmap and see about trying for Eugene and Nari's if I can.
