The joke has gotten so out of hand that the made up characters have been put into smash and had costumes in other games. Nintendo R&D wants to keep pushing it until someone figures it out, by making Zelda tie-ins and stuff, but Monolith is nervous because they've been credited with development, and they're worried their reputation might take a hit.
This is an unfounded concern though, since as of earlier today, Nintendo's web backend engineering has reported only 4 switch users have visited the e-shop page for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, all apparently in error as they all backed out before the page fully loaded. Nobody has ever attempted to click the buy button, which is hooked to a script that simulates a communications error just in case.

But sure, there's some good DLC characters, there's also Byleth and Hero and Sephiroth and a zillion built in fire emblem characters. Xenoblade characters seem so boring on top of the existing roster instead of something more interesting.

Also Pyra has been a top requested character for a while and was frankly just expected eventually, because the people who respond to Smash opinion polls and the people who like games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 overlap strongly
