I killed the first boss on I think day 61. Tonight I built a cabin on one side of the river across from an area with a black forest, and then built a bridge so I can build another cabin closer to the black forest.
By the time I kill the second boss I'll probably have built at least three more cabins.

The game doesn't hurry me along in any way and I like that. I got my whole afterlife ahead of me and I'm gonna enjoy it.
I can't wait to actually get a boat eventually but with the way I am currently progressing it will take some time.

I'm probably going to just terraform my way through the whole game. I bet it's not terribly hard to set up a bunch of kill funnels so I can just make noise, draw in the spawns, draw them into coming at me in a line so I can smash'em with minimal risk, then go black to clear-cutting.

I played for about 2 hours yeaterday morning. Apparently, building a shelter for a workstation was beyond my intellectual capacity.
I kept trying to put poles up, so I could build a raised platform house. That is not the way to go. Just put up some walls. That's the ticket.
I haven't done much but gather and build and I already love this game. Just need to find more flint
In my search for the coast and more flint I ended up in the Dark Forrest and had a train of goblin looking things chasing me in the dark and nope, not going back there
Day before yesterday I ran into a 2 star boar and got him to chase me all the way home. 90% of the pigs I had tamed/bred escaped when I was getting him into the paddock, but one stayed.
Now I have so much meat I deliberately burn it just because I have more use for the coal.
Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.
I tend to make coal more than cooked meat because I don't have the patience and would go do something else while waiting
Would be nice to have a dedicated cook npc or that upgrade in monster hunter where I could just cook multiple meats in one shot
Btw does 2 star boars breed produce 2 star piglets? This is interesting stuff indeed

Well the baby has a 50% chance of being a 2 star if it has 1 2 star parent, 100% if both parents are 2 stars.
So yeah, breed them two star babies

I had a realization this afternoon.
Valheim is a game that rewards long play sessions. That is good for people who enjoy the continued building and delayed gratification. I am not those people; I like games I can take in bite-sized chunks and feel like I'm making progress.
I don't think the idea that you build toward something surprises anyway, I just had that conscious realization today.

"Oh boy, runestone! I hope the boss isn't too far this time!"
God dammit.
Oh you got off easy. . .
Yeah, that ain't bad at all.
When I fond the first Elder runestone I thought it was bugged because it was so far away it was off the edge of my map screen.

I started off on an island composed of meadows and a few black forests, chopped up by rivers. Literally the second boss requires me to learn how to use the boat and travel a distance greater than the width of the island.
I have spent a few hours searching for a runestone for the third boss now, went through 3 entire Swamp biomes with no luck. Not even anything interesting or useful in those yet. If dungeons or geysirs exist in the swamp they are either extremely rare or I'm very unlucky.

Yeah, that's suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper lame, that happened to me for a while. You gotta hit BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG swamps. Small ones never seem to have anything at all in them. No crypts, no monster spawns, just maybe a shack or two with nothing you need.
The second you hit a big swamp, you'll know it's a big swamp cause you can't go more than a couple of feet without seeing multiple crypts.

Route we took, yes that is one solid continent with no river shortcuts. Red is the route we could have taken had the wind been blowing in a slightly different direction. Note the edge of the map in the bottom left to see how far away it is.
Story continued: (spoiler for swamp area and items you can have around 2nd boss)
The "boat" mark on the map is where someone died when we got the boat stuck. We had planned to put a portal down around the boss, so we put it down there instead. Easy corpse run, and we deconstructed the portal.... only issue was we didn't get the full refund for it. We had to farm up cores and go into the plains (super dangerous) for fine wood because there weren't any meadows around. We finally get enough to build another portal, find a good landing spot near the boss, and then proceed to die before we can get it down.
So now we have to sail back, in a medium boat, wearing whatever old scraps of armor we had saved. Between the storms and other sea dangers, the boat was looking pretty ragged by the time we got back. No idea how much health it had because no one brought a hammer. It was night time, so we decided to wait it out considering nighttime swamp was what killed us in the first place. Right before dawn a single leech swims out and destroys the boat. Unfortunately we were pretty far from the shoreline, so the two people who had leveled swimming go for it, while the other two tread water to conserve stamina. The swimmers barely made it to the original boat (leeches and losing health from stamina loss), sail it back to the other two people, also barely in time (leeches)... which was super lucky because we needed all 4 to recover our bodies and put down the portal.
It was worth it though, that swamp not only had the boss, but enough iron to completely fill a longship and we still haven't finished all the dungeons.

This is straight up what kept me from the third tech level for like... ten hours
It took me so long to find a swamp that had anything in it and when I did it had crypts everywhere! Problem was it was so far afield of my primary base it takes an eternity to get there and back again
Boss tip for people in the process of mining iron who haven't fought the third boss yet
when you're thinking about which iron weapon to craft I recommend you make a mace. The third boss is vulnerable to blunt damage, and what the fuck resistant to all other damage (other than frost, which you probably don't have).

There is a way to get it, but you have to be crafty about it.
Oh look, a distant shore! And it's aaall Black Forest... and it's larger than my entire starting island...
Oh look, I found a nice Meadow island with some Swamp area attached! Oh hey it even has a pre-built village for me, perfect! Wait, who is that wandering around... ELITE!? NOPE. *chomp* Oh. Leeches. Fun. *chomp chomp* "Well I've been fleeing for ten minutes now and the leeches are still here. Um.
Phew, my boat is falling apart by the leeches finally got bored. *ROOOOOOAAAAAR* Oh hey it's one of those serpents people talk about. Huh. *crunch..... CHOMP*

if you're gonna go sploring, take stuff to establish a portal and some food and basically nothing else
I was about to be all hey this is a thread about The Vikings and then I was like oh wait actually it is 100% a thread about The Vikings
So instead I'll just ask if anyone else has run into issues building two story log cabins? I've got one that's about 22m x 18m and for whatever reason there is just not enough structural integrity to support a chimney covering over the entire central fireplace. One side supports the cover for the chimney but the other doesn't despite being symmetrical.
I'm assuming I screwed up on a joint somewhere but inspecting things is, uh, tricky.

Just did this and love the music during the fight.
Now I can go mine that tin I found earlier!
Do we have a pa server yet?
But one big thing Valheim does better is it refunds you all of your resources when you break things down, not half or whatever

I fear by the time I get it next month the hype will have moved on
Or, in a month, they'll have added more neat stuff to make it more enticing
It's going to take me like four months to beat it, minimum, if they don't add anything.
I am pretty excited to tame a wolf which I can finally take along with me on adventures, wonder if it would survive the plains
This will be here until I receive an apology or Weedlordvegeta get any consequences for being a bully
I've been hurt by promising islands before. A big shiny mountain and swamp, but with nothing.
So I'll be that cynical guy telling you to do a background check before commiting to anything.
The building in this game is great. Seeing the progression as I keep playing and changing biomes is a joy.

I can't make portals yet. QQ But yeah, I made sure to go basically nekkid.
it's 2 surtling cores, 10 eyes and I think 20 fine wood
I have not yet seen my kin to rip the cores out from their insides. I'll get there, surely. I'm the bigger fire elemental.
The main source of cores is tombs, which are in Black Forests
