Context for this: literally the day before this, Patrick stated with full confidence that Microsoft would not lower the price of the Xbox One to match the PS4's nor sell it without a Kinect
and then, after they recorded the podcast and while Vinny was editing it, Microsoft announced that they were lowering the price of the Xbox One to match the PS4's and selling it without Kinect
i have nothing in particular against patrick klepek but he DOES have like, consistently the most vanilla-ass opinions on damn near every subject and it's very funny to me

The funny thing is that people got mad at Patrick for being rude during this bit, completely oblivious to the fact that it was obviously heavily edited.

He does interrupt too much but also he’s maybe the only one other than maybe Cado who I feel like I can actually agree with their game recommendations at vice.
Oh I guess Gita too.
Really Austin and Rob keep burnin me and I have learned to just enjoy listening to their opinions about games I won’t be able to get into.

It's going to be weird if I have to find something else to listen to about current games. I mean I used to listen to 1up's podcasts and Destructiod's podcasts and then Giantbomb and now that I look over the landscape of videogame podcasts and what's left...
There's Vidjagame Apocalypse...in case I want to listen to a podcast that will never bring up the many many problems with Ubisoft.

I could listen to that fella talk about games I have zero interest in all day long. And have. BOY does he like Destiny
I recently stopped listening the IGN Xbox podcast (I listened to it mostly due to Microsoft being in such a weird place in the industry) but between the host saying incredibly ignorant shit like "Why would Microsoft want Obsidian working on games like Grounded or Avowed when they can work on Syrim" and then they had an exclusive about Six Days in Fallujah, and I decided I really didn't need to be giving them any more of my time.
Losing the Aftermath, the Beastcast and the Hot Spot is putting my gaming podcasting at... uh.. the Bombcast, Waypoint, and Fire Escape I guess.

Beastcast has definitely been an anchor, especially after the past year. Part of me hopes that they will get together and do an independent equivalent, but I remember Vinny's exhaustion at the fucked parts of the games industry and world events that had to be addressed on-air, so I doubt it.
there might be a non-compete exit clause in their contracts I guess, but they also must grapple with whether they still want to do video games talky show shit anymore
The state of california does not recognize the legality of non-compete clauses
man, this is a lot. There were several years where I consumed everything that GiantBomb put out.
The last year has kind of prepared me for this I guess. I fell off hard when covid started and they all went remote. Stopped watching almost all video, starting missing the occasional Beastcast, and only listened to like 25% of the Bombcasts.
I'm going to really miss having Vinny's voice be a regular part of my week
That fucking perpendicular intercept is still I think the most impressively skilled failure they've ever done. Just how flawlessly they executed a plan that was doomed from the start.
In a statement, Giant Bomb founder Gerstmann said: "I've spent a lot of the last year thinking about what's next for Giant Bomb and most of those roads lead to a full-on rethink of what it means to be a Website About Video Games in 2021. While I certainly would have loved to solve these challenges with my longtime friends and coworkers by my side, it just wasn't meant to be. I wish Vinny, Alex, and Brad the best. Meanwhile, we have a pretty exciting opportunity to broaden our horizons, rethink every facet of our operation, and get to a place where we're truly able to build that bomb all over again... or die trying."
Speaking to the future of the site, the Giant Bomb team as a whole said: "There is a collective vision for what the future of Giant Bomb is and it involves both familiar and new faces. We're already in talks with creators so that we can begin the next chapter. We're fully aware that this marks a big change and we're using this as an opportunity to rethink what this site is. It's a chance to introduce new personalities from different backgrounds and explore categories and topics that we never have before."
Yeah god I hope they hire like 6 new people fast and hit the ground running
I don’t really know what “rethink what a website is” means besides turning it into a Youtube and Twitch channel though.
Their website is still partially based around the idea of articles and reviews, which haven't been a thing in ages.
Shame those video review discussions didn't take off, but I can see how people didn't want to sit through 90 minutes of discussion to find out what they thought. Especially when they have a podcast for that.

Don't forget the games Wiki that has been Jeff's baby well before the real babies came along.
Abby was a breath of fresh air for me and her leaving left the place kind of stale
In retrospect I guess it was kinda like the rest of the East crew was just trying to hang on
I stand by my statement that Abby is the best thing that ever happened to Giant Bomb. And now in hindsight the point she left being the beginning of the end is interesting.
Man, I'm just thinking about all of the ripple effects this is going to have. Like, are they even going to cover E3 live this year? I was going to take time off from work specifically to watch Jeff, Vinny, Brad and Alex talk over the conferences. Now what?
And while I wasn't planning on doing PAX this year, the GB panel is like my #1 reason for going, is that going to happen anymore?

For a bunch of strangers on a video game website leaving to go do other stuff.
Brains are stupid as shit.

Another part of me is thinking there's going to be an Arrow Pointing Down youtube channel starting in around 12-18 months or so.
Jeff and Calli collab.
It needs to happen.
