got together to play a friend's unpowered cube today and as someone that has done like 5 cube attempts in my life, I still don't know what i'm doing, but when that's the case, building green big bois seems to be a solid fallback and i went 3-0 with some fauna shaman + elvish piper shenanigans. Really it's just reinforcement that the reason i still even play this game is the gathering bits
Gotta say... I still have no interest in playing Alchemy but this weekend's Set Championship was a blast to watch.
Midrange is just so much more fun to watch.
Did not expect venture coming in so strong.
Yeah if it had been a bunch of control mirrors I would've checked out for sure.
Although I was rooting for Shota to make T8 to watch his crazy Jeskai Mill deck in action some more. Invoke Calamity into double Tasha's Hideous Laughter is amazing tech.
Technically I think he's currently unbanned? It was a 30 month suspension back in 2019. But, you know. Hard to come back to the game professionally after that.

So it was. Very curious why several magic players on my Twitter feed started talking about it today then. I assumed it must have just happened.

Michael David Lynch of the I hate your deck youtube channel was outed in early #metoo stuff that came back up recently when people put the dots together, which started a conversation about “pillars” of the “community” and how yuuya was a beloved one of those but collapsed the moment he was caught

Is he the current host of IHYD, or is he the former part of the pair who left?
E: Dug into it, it's the current host, he was noted for having pressured an actress to film a topless scene for an independent film in 2016 and lied about what was going to be in the final cut of the film.

Not in the final cut - I've seen the movie and she never appears topless in it. It sounds like the topless version of the scene was included at a screening and changed after she saw it and confronted him about it.
Still disappointing to read, IHYD is the only MtG content I still watched and it had been a lot of fun lately.

It’s funny it’s not like I was ever grinding the scg tour but them ending that and coverage of their events just made me not care about these cons. We do have a local group doing 5k+ events in a yearly series and it’s funny how much that simple add makes it feel like something worth going to
So the MTG Arena economy stream happened today over at Daily MTG.
They confirmed that they aren't going to add a dusting system, and they aren't going to add a way to convert common/uncommon wildcards to rare ones because "Arena gives out too many uncommon wildcards."
But you'll be able to buy a pack of 12 rare + 4 mythic wildcards for $50.
Not having dusting or a way to convert are fine. The economy being balanced around dusting or wildcard conversion just means everything gets balanced around the median of "dust almost everything", so you get less incidental maybe useful stuff later because it all turns to dust. People only want a dusting system because they imagine it'd be tacked on to the current system or more generous, or because they realize it sells better than just saying "give us more stuff" directly.
Selling a wildcard pack that's literally like, one rare WC and one mythic WC better than just buying 50 packs, without the part where you get 50 packs of cards attached, is insane. Laughably pathetic offering.

If they just silently added this pack in an update it would be met with some critical comments but largely passed over.
But announcing it in a stream that players assumed would be about adjusting the economy to be more friendly is some there’s-a-guy-with-a-gun-just-off-screen-send-help shit.

Oh look, another reason to hate Alchemy- the damn choose spellbook cards slow people down even more!
I vaguely like Alchemy, but I hate those things.
I don't want to have to remember all 500 things you might get if I let you play that 2/2! And I don't want to wait for you to figure it out either!
I already uninstalled arena when alchemy was announced so I don’t want to harp on it.
But I do think it’s hilarious that they’re announcing a new bridge to pioneer format because they already had messed that up because they decided monetizing historic was more important.
It’s just all treadmill at this point with wotc just eating the carrot in front of us.
The problem is they fobbed the problem off for so long that anything short of free wildcards or gifting sets after they rotate out was pretty much gonna be panned. The fact they had their vaunted "economy stream" almost impromptu and it was to announce such an anemic offer is them basically going "shut up and feed our bottom line plebs" and trying to coast on the brand/sunk cost fallacy rather than actually try and make a competitive product.
It's almost impressive in it's contempt and arrogance.
"Go down, kick ass, and set yourselves up as gods, that's our Prime Directive!"
I think Frank is incorrect on the prevalence of mythic rare and rare wcs from the wheel and overestimating them. The icr bundle is slightly better than packs if you truly, truly do not care about your packs.

Calling out Frank Karsten on his math is a bold strategy.

Rares upgrade to mythics 1/8 of the time in packs, so having half as many mythic WCs as rares drops does not make sense on the face of it.

That 50$ number feels like they wanted to keep the pricing at something they felt would be reasonable in paper magic for some reason?
Like 50 bucks to pick up any 12 paper rares and 4 mythics would be a steal, even just choosing from the pool of rares available in arena

Did they change the smell of the packs, or are Set Boosters different from Draft Boosters??

Yes, they said they were going to right up front. For every Standard set.
Fuck
oh man
good thing i'm outta magic forever or that would be rough
They didn't do that last time and they're not doing that now.
Probably still no commons, though.
edit: also everything on the iPad version of the client is now gigantic. I suspect the latest patch swapped in the iPhone version or something.

Amazing
I don't think seek does what you think it does.
Weird I had the unedited post cached or something.
It said I got 2000. Not sure if a visual bug or bonus points.

But in arena it feels pretty stingy
