Have a shorter (10 minute?) period. If there is still no winner, extend the OT period (keep playing, no kick-off or any other changes) until the first team scores.

That's kind of how soccer works. Up to 30 minutes of OT, then into shootouts if it's still tied.

I'd even be fine with them just adapting college rules - give each team the ball at some arbitrary spot, go until they score or run out of downs, force them to go for 2 on a touchdown, repeat till there's a winner. It's not perfect, but it gives both teams an actual equal chance and the game can still end quickly to satisfy the networks.

Teams that win the coin flip are 10-1 in postseason overtime over the last decade, I think that's the only fact you need to show that the current overtime rules are basically just a matter of luck. Which is a crappy, unsatisfying way to determine a winner if two teams are so evenly matched they remained tied after four quarters.

How many of those 10 were won on the first possession?

    Seven

The CFL's overtime works really well, and I think it's inspired by US college ball rules. It's a coin toss to decide who gets the ball to start, but after that, each team gets the same number of offensive possessions. They start at their opponent's 35-yard line and must attempt the 2-point conversion if they score a touchdown. In the regular season, it's up to two possessions for each side before a tie is declared; in the playoffs and Grey Cup, of course, it goes until there's a winner.

This meant that the last Grey Cup wasn't decided on the near-immediate touchdown, but on the ensuing drive by the other team, where the team that just scored then intercepted a pass. Both sides of the ball got to shine in the extra frame.

So you have an OT period and then whomever has the ball at the 10:01 mark, or whoever wins that coin toss is the winner? Seams like the same problem only 10 minutes later.

Seems everyone is interviewing Bucs coach’s , did not expect to have this much turnover.

  • JimBobtheMonkeyJimBobtheMonkey Registered User regular
Maybe a little, but at least it wouldn't be directly tied to a coin flip. Whoever has the ball when it goes to sudden death would be decided by actual football playing. Barring a 10+ minute drive, each team would get at least one possession and have a chance, if they can control the clock. It's just an idea, nothing I've put a ton of thought into.

BA is very open about wanting his coordinators to get hired as HCs and such

At this rate Rodgers is going to have his own podcast and somehow make more money than he every did playing quarterback and unseats Rogan.

Yeah seems like a strange hire. The defense is good but getting old. You have a possible superstar QB, Bieniemy seemed like a no brainer. Oh well, as a Lions fan, I'm happy to have the Bears continue with mediocrity.

I have a feeling that this season might be Andy Reid's last ride, and Bieniemy has a distinct 'heir apparent' aura about him. At least, he'd better be. Dude deserves better than to be pointlessly jerked around

I think Reid is going to coach until he dies right on the sidelines.

He's also only 63. That guy ain't gonna retire this season.

It's funny because more people know who Mina Kimes is than who Jeff Garcia is.

Also we can all tell that Jimmy G played a horrible game so I don't know what his point is.
