Ended up playing through the Fallen Aces demo for another go and I'm really enjoying the freedom you have to tackle things in different ways. There's some fun alternate paths, hidden goodies, and being really aggressive on your stealth means you can knock a bunch of people out in quick succession which is how I tend to play stealth games. Alternatively you can just bash people's heads in with lead pipes or chuck random scenery items at people.

Tbh I spent like ten minutes amusing myself with throwing pool balls at a group of baddies and watching them freak out, lol. This is gonna be another New Blood banger.

Playing through Unreal Gold with the evolution mod on hard difficulty…

I’m pretty damn impressed with the enemy ai in this. Most fps games have enemies that are obstacles. The skarrj and mercenaries and the like act like players with just a different toolset than you have.

Like in the quake games you would overcome difficult enemy like a puzzle, by figuring out their patterns (like for example figuring out that you needed to exploit cover for vores or melee range for shamblers). Unreal (at least with the setup I’m using) is a totally different beast.

Wish the monsters had a few more frames of animation. They look a little floaty moving around.

Yeah the art is amazing, but it all feels like the animations, including weapons, need just another few more frames. There's to many big jarring jumps between frames. Coupled with the ultra smooth movement it feels off.

Nightmare Reaper is out and it's so good Civvie gushed about it for like half an hour

Progress through the cursed depths of a nightmare while finding an arsenal of powerful weapons and improving your abilities along the way. This retro-inspired FPS with looter shooter and rogue-lite elements breaches the wall between classic and modern gameplay.

So I ended up buying and beating Nightmare Reaper off of Civvie's recommendation and it's real good and a I agree with his review where it definitely slows down towards the middle and is probably too long by several hours. It feels good to play but some of the world interaction (pressing switches) can feel a bit wonky at times.

Weapon variety is fun but they don't do enough to justify maining anything that isn't just a gun in my opinion.

Some of the platforming puzzle rooms can be cheesed remarkably easily with the chainsaw or the grapple.

I had a lot of fun and might revisit it if it gets additional content.

I made it to the end and kind of just got completely stonewalled on the final boss. Just didn't have any gun good enough for it and wasn't getting anything good enough for it. and there's no way to really infinitely grind gold in the game to try and power through, so I just ended up completely stuck and gave up. It was a shame.

This reminds me I really need to finish Ion Fury on Xbox. I think the frame-skipping issues with the console release were patched out (really, not launching with controller inversion was a lot less forgivable), and I was having a jolly old time with it scratching that old Duke 3D Build Engine itch.

I sort of which there weren't quite as many secrets in each level, or that I could ignore the "You missed this many secrets," warning more easily.

I'm weirdly a little nervous about this one cause it's giving me that feeling of "They're trying too hard." The overthetopness is striking me as a bit forced but I can't really articulate what exactly is doing that for me.

Idk how they managed it but Nightmare Reaper has some not uncommon performance issues. There's nothing wild going on in game but it's stuttering like a bastard for me (and others). Every other shot hitches my game.

There's a Steam Sale going on, so I figured I'd point out some Boomer Shooters that I think are worth picking up for not a lot of money. Some are old classics, some are remasters and others are newer games.

Doom Classic Complete $3.74 (75% off) - Contains Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom and Master Levels for Doom II. If you don't own these already, this is a great price to get ahold of those wads. The Bethesda updates are fine, but I'd recommend something like GZ Doom for fully unleashing what you can do with Doom these days.

Heretic + Hexen Collection $2.99 (70% off) - Contains Heretic + Shadows of the Serpent Rider, Hexen + Deathkings of Dark Citadel and Hexen II (but no Hexen II expansion). Hexen is a pretty good Doom clone; enemies are a little more spongy and some of the weapons are less than great, and with the expansion the game gets way too long and annoyingly difficult. Hexen was an attempt to make it more like an RPG with specific classes, each with their own set of weapons, and an early hub system that allowed for traveling back and forth between levels (later done more smoothly in Strife and Quake II and perfected in Half-Life). Hexen II, built on the Quake engine, is a further evolution of that, with class levels and experience. Personally I'm more of a Heretic man, but some people really like the Hexen games. Shame the Hexen II expansion and Heretic 2 are in rights limbo, but maybe when Microsoft finishes buying Activision, that shit will get sorted out.

Strife: Veteran Edition $2.49 (75% off) - Another Nightdive remaster, this time of the now-defunt Rogue Entertainments spin with the Doom engine; Strife was an open world game back in 1996! There was a town with NPCs you could talk to (with voice acting!), buy stuff from, there's a rudimentary stealth system, you could return to previously visited areas. Weapons and enemies aren't great sadly, but the surrounding story is pretty interesting for a 1996 shooter. There's even optional levels you don't need to go to finish the game. The game was ahead of it's time, though it's definitely dated now. The Nightdive Remaster adds all of the flare you're expecting and is a good way of getting into the game these days.

Quake $3.99 (60% off) - The recent Night Dive remaster of Quake is excellent; it contains the original Quake, both mission packs, and two level packs by machine games,. Plus a horde mode, and tweaks to Nightmare mode to make it a little more difficult. Also mod compatible. A great all around remaster.

Blood: Fresh Supply $5.99 (40% off) - A pretty good remaster of what is probably the best Build engine game; great weapons, with a fun emphasis on fire mechanics, and a lot of real bastards of enemies. Game is still hard, bordering on unfair on the higher difficulties, so be aware. Comes with the original four episodes, the official expansion, the unofficial Sunsoft expansion, and is mod compatible. (I highly recommend Death Wish). It's not a flawless remaster, but the people who own the IP didn't want to pay to get it to 100%. Still a great game and a good enough version.

DUSK $8.99 (55% off) - DUSK is the first of New Bloods take on boomer shooters; drawing heavy inspiration from games like Quake and Blood, DUSK is a dark and gloomy romp across three episodes of rural farmlands, industrial factories and beyond. The game has a great set of weapons to use against some really cool and spooky enemies. This game is rad and moody and harkens back to the era of single word names and constant action.

Amid Evil $8.99 (55% off) - The second of New Bloods excellent retro shooters, Amid Evil takes inspiration from games like Heretic and Hexen, with a medieval fantasy setting. This game has, bar none, the best set of weapons I've ever played with in a shooter, especially when you supercharge them. The game is structed in 4 level sets across seven worlds, each with it's own design style and set of monsters. Really, really hate a particular type of monster? Don't worry, after a few levels you'll never see them again! The game has RTX support and there's even a free demo if you want to try before you buy! There's a DLC in the works, but who knows when that's actually coming out.

You can also get Diakatana for 97 cents, which is a decent price to check out that weird artifact of history. https://store.steampowered.com/app/242980/Daikatana/

If you are a fan of like boomer shooter Deathmatching I actually fully recommend daikatana. the single player is....it's daikatana but the DEATHMATCHING is actually superb. Every weird design decision for daikatana suddenly makes sense and is interesting and engaging the moment there's some other person of the other side of the gun.

Looking at Into The Pit immediately left me with the impression of "crunchy, retro aesthetic gone wrong," but I'm glad I gave the demo a shot because I had a lot of fun with it. It's very easy to set up a Devil-Daggers-like loadout, which is deeply satisfying even if you don't have the same movement capability as in that game.

I played through, it was fine.

    Just fine.

Apparently I'm just losing touch with videogames as Realm's Deep 2022 is going on right now and I didn't realize.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqDedfEgprs
Been wonder what happened to this one.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K37l3-La-Go

God, this one is so weird. Originally there was a company that was going to make an Isometric Duke Nukem game, but 3D Realms accidently sold the full rights to Gearbox, so they changed it to be based on a Duke Nukem Forever character that got binned, Bombshell. The game came out, wasn't great, and the company making it had to rebrand as Slipgate Ironworks.

Meanwhile, a prequel game based on the build engine, essentially a Duke Nukem 3D style retro game, came out called Ion Fury (originally Ion Maiden, but lawsuit), but it was by Voidpoint who turned out to have some real transphobic turds in charge.

So enter this new game, made on UE4, being made by the original Bombshell devs instead of voidpoint, and it looks to be an attempt at making a game in the 2001 era Duke Nukem Forever style. WEIRD.

Also it looks like it's going to crossover with SiN? Like, that's John Blade with his trademark gun and the iconic opening bank level.

  • heenatoheenato Alice Leywind Registered User regular
I'm cautiously optimistic about phantom fury since A: It's not voidpoint (Also I think Ion fury is just a bad game) But slipgate has worked on a bunch of good FPS games at this point that they have to have some experience under their belt.

However, the news I'm most excited about is FUCKING OFFICIAL PORT OF CHASM: THE RIFT!

TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE TIMESTRIKERS IN 4K
