So I downloaded the FolkSoul Demo (FolkLore here) from the Japanese Playstation Store. I posted an article over at the Platformers - which you can read here
If you'd like to watch the video directly, it's here at YouTube
I discussed it on the Platformers podcast this week, but a quick rundown is: text is in Japanese (which I don't read, making it a tad difficult to get through), the visuals are stunning and the gameplay - with a little SIXAXIS soul ripping - is fun.
Thoughts? Anyone else played it? Ain't it great that there's no region lock on the PSN store? :P
can a US PS3 DL the demo somehow? like, changing regions? or some such?
I have a North American PS3. It's easy to get Japanese demos, simply create a new User (mine is JapanThreepio) and set the region for that user to Japan. You have to go through the Japanese account sign-up - there's a great walkthrough HERE
I have to say I'm very pleased with the region-free approach Sony is taking with their store. It's more difficult for Microsoft due to the video content available, but if Sony can keep the PSN relatively world wide I think it would be a great benefit. Playing demos like these - even when I can't understand the text - really stirs my anticipation for the game.
Glad to help! It's fun eh? Both characters have completely separate souls to steal, so I might do a comparison vid later this week to show off the powers.
Fantastic video, Threepio. I may have to check out this demo. The game seems to just ooze atmosphere, which is one of my favorite things as this generation of games move on. Between this and Bioshock, and a whole bunch of others, I'm going to be drowning (haha...ha) in atmosphere this gen.

It was output through composite, then run through garageband as a webvideo - which brings you down to 15fps. It wasn't really meant to be a "look how pretty it is" video - hence the youtube.
The Ghostbuster mechanism with the sixaxis is neat. I like it.
Thanks for the comment brynstar, glad you liked it
You really can't judge a game's visual quality based on a video on youtube. Even Gears of War & Eternal Sonata look like garbage on youtube.
I browsed through the video so forgive me if these questions were answered in a part I skipped, but how different are the two characters? Do they control the same and have similar abilities? Do they both go through the same story? As fara as combat goes, are there combos and special attacks ala DMC and Ninja Gaiden or is combat just based on using your 4 current soul abilities?
Anyway, thanks for the time you spent making the video Threepio. Don't know if it's a must have yet, but it looks like a game worth watching. Is it a PS3 exclusive? Hoping it's not since there's no way on earth I could convince the wife that we need another system in addition to the Wii & 360.
I can still see the poor texture quality and count the polygons on the terraign.
From 1080i to 320x280... and you can see the texture quality?
Please, let's be serious here. I'll sit down tomorrow and record the screen of my plasma and I'll post that for a more accurate look at the video quality (or you can check out any of the trailers out there that are definitively of a higher quality, video wise). To say poor texture quality and that you can count polygons on a youtube vid? Aye carumba.
It was mostly there for the atmosphere and the gameplay - which I enjoyed. The game is also quite beautiful (moreso over HDMI). I'm looking forward to it.

The characters both rip souls - but they are part of distinct story arcs. It appears that they encounter each other - or at least that they're aware of each other - in the demo, and they do rip different souls for different powers so far. There are spots for quite a few different souls, leading me to believe that the combat system is quite rich.
It is a PS3 exclusive so far, I don't know if it's destined for any other system at this point. Glad you enjoyed the vid.
It took me a good ten minutes to figure out how to beat the boss. I thought you were supposed to shake the controller in time to the beat. I was all "rhythm game wtf?"

hey halo 3 looks like trash
just fyi
man i am not even sure where this came from
anyway, dudes seriously shouldn't be judging how this game looks from a youtube video. that's almost as bad as that pixel and photoshops comment
i am so unbelievably tired of people caring only about graphics, one of my good friends is a halo fanboy and he does not shut the fuck up about halo 3's water physics
gah
no more talk about how this game looks..it's the art and atmosphere that count
My only concern from watching that video would be whether or not the soul-ripping mechanic becomes boring after repeating it 200 times. Other than that though, gorgeous.
And Zephyr, was there really any reason to start bashing Halo for no reason? It's not like rayofash said "This game looks so much worse than Halo 3 lololol."
It looks like they've got a few ways of keeping the soul ripping fresh - pulling multiple souls for combos, unique mechanics for larger characters and bosses, that sort of thing.
So far I've enjoyed it much more than having a "suck soul" button - it almost feels like EXTREME ACTION ADVENTURE SOUL FISHING 3.0. "I hooked me a biggun!"
For a ten minute demo, I have to say they did a good job with the hook. The more I play it, the more I want the full game.

Yea and later bosses require you to change up how you pull to the controller so its not just pulling back all the time.

So instead of saying that you decided to come off as a dick. Good game plan!
Anyway, this game does look a bit better than I was originally giving it credit, but the Genji guys don't exactly inspire a whole lot of confidence.

I didn't do a great job of showing off movement in combat; there's a very fluid dash move that you can pull off that's great for laying a bit of a beatdown on multiple enemies (which in turn helps you fish multiple souls in one go).
It is only a ten minute demo, but I would imagine that there are quite a few underside-exposing powers that will enable something akin to MASSIVE DAMAGE.

your voice, if that's you, is quite calm. It's like, one of those voices that could be telling something of great horror yet put people at ease.

I THINK YOU KILLED MY COMMENT! COMMENT!? SPEAK TO ME COMMENT!
COMMENT!? COMMENT!? COMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENT!
Seriously though, that monster is pretty awesome. It's like something out of that story book about those wild things.
Although untill i realized it, it took me forever to beat the bosses in the demo.
Yeah, no. Felt a little dumb when I cottoned on.
