Thinking on this a bit more as my brain digests and I did like it, but I really find myself thinking that the pacing was kind of off. It felt...rushed...for what it's doing. It's still good, it's still effective, but I think all the scenes could have used a bit more time to breathe.
I dunno. Maybe it's just because my wife's family are farm people from that part of the country and her granddad sounds exactly like the PC, so I know what conversations with those folks feel like; they generally aren't quite so brisk, whether they're serious or trivial.
I just hit Act III, 18 months after starting. I may as well have played it as it came out, I'm essentially functioning on the same damn timetable, 7 years delayed.
It's really fun! However, I really feel that the level design lets it down. I have a really bad mental image of the place and am just kind of following the quest indicator around, because aside from specific areas they all look the same. It might have to do with having very little downtime to safely explore, so you're always in a rush to move on. Compare this to Prey, where by the end I knew that station inside and out.
I also feel that having the alien be almost omnipresent after a certain point was a mistake. It might work differently for other folks, but for me, the moment I realised that "alien is in the vents" doesn't actually pose a threat until you hit a section where it's actively hunting you I started ignoring it entirely, I just play the game until an event happens that starts hunt mode, or until it kills me (after 15 minutes of just clanking around in the air vents) and I go "ah, time to be stealthy I guess" and reload.
Also also, the very first time you're directly facing the alien is really, really poorly designed. You basically have to go down what is essentially a long linear corridor that dead ends in your objective and then make your way back. This is bad, because it means you can't avoid the alien (you have no distraction tools at that point, and there are no alternate ways to take to avoid it), all you can do is stop&hide, and hiding will randomly get you killed after a certain time. I must have redone that section 10 times, and nothing since has felt that much out of my direct control.
However, so far none of that is detracting from just how delightfully "oh shit, I'm actually there!" it feels. The little music cues, the Wingdings keyboards, faux VHS transitions, all great.

Also how the alien
The second is the twist. You know, the one about it being an Aliens game, not an Alien one. The one where in hindsight it's actually really obvious when you're in the hospital level but unless you're looking for it you aren't going to realise most of the bodies there have chestburster wounds.
The abrupt time skip at the start caught me off guard, but otherwise it's about the protagonist literally confronting their demons in their dreams and trying to improve as a person in reality. Initially you're kinda shuffling between different upgrade stations in the real world, but I've just unlocked the social link stuff and there's some fun narrative stuff there.
The human designs are deliberately simple with no faces and have an almost wooden doll quality, which I don't mind. The level design is refreshing in its mundane nature and the sweeping musical score is almost therapeutic.
Combat gets the fundamentals right, it's melee, ranged (which includes fun stuff like snowballs and water balloons), shield (with parry), dodge and various magic attacks. Game isn't overly difficult so far but that's fine by me.

The demo they put out a while ago was already really good.
Although personally I really didn't care for the story bits and started skipping them about halfway through the demo.
Huh, I played through a bunch of Redout recently, and that game is kind of maddening. It controls pretty well and looks real neat, and I like hover racers. But that game is so damn fast, and the turns so tight, it's almost impossible to actually see where you are going a lot of the time, especially into the higher classes. There's no map for the tracks so you can't plan out your turns, there's a lot of blind jumps. It's the kind of game where I'll think 'yeah, I'm gonna play some redout!' and then after playing for like 20 minutes I throw the controller down in disgust. But then the next day I'm thinking about Redout again...

Wipeout you might not hit a turn, but you can at least see the wall before you hit it. Redout combined extreme vertical tilts (where you can't see down the track) with this high contrast, untextured aesthetic which looks real cool, but means that all the walls blur together. And other racers can take items which fuzz your vision as an attack.
Ahh! I'm talking all this shit about it but I think I might reinstall it.
