Let’s Make a July 4th Movie List

Raijin QuickfootRaijin Quickfoot I'm your Huckleberry YOU'RE NO DAISYRegistered User, ClubPA regular
Let’s do it! Make a list of movies to watch over Independence Day weekend that are either terrible patriotic, anti-patriotic, or just stupid fun.

1 movie per person. Quote the previous movie when you add yours and let’s make a list.

EVERYONE loves lists

I will start with the obvious choice

Jaws

If you try to add a second movie an Eagle in an Uncle Sam hat will break into your house and devour your liver.

I'm introducing a British friend to the Jackass movies this weekend. He's never seen them before.

I can think of nothing more MURICA than those movies right now.

The Jurassic park theme is also great played by heavy metal scream trumpet

Just take it up an octave and try to make some people bleed from their ears

As a patriot, and an American, the spirit of Independence Day for me is about gathering with community, celebrating our diversity, and saying, "Fuck the (British) government!"

I've never met anyone who's ever heard of this, but if you like summertime slice of life stuff, I highly recommend Kikujiro.

It stars Takeshi Kitano as a no-account gambler and small-time scammer who's tasked with taking a local sadsack kid to go see his mom down the coast. It's mostly just a series of light comedy vignettes but it's got very strong summer vibes (going to a local fair, eating watermelon and swimming at a random lake, hanging out in a field), and by the end it actually ends up being pretty sweet and touching. Plus a really good theme by Joe Hisaishi!

If you know and like Kitano, it's well worth the $4 Amazon rental or whatever.

I was actually going to add it, because it is a genuinely great movie, and Gibson's character is pointedly not a good person.

....pretty sure we watched this in a 2nd? year Japanese course, movie day kinda thing, y'know.

This is also how I occasionally have "PANDA GO PANDA GO PANDA" just pop into my head.

Alternate venue would have been my film club (or that group, more casually), which screened --via import or old family videos-- locally-underappreciated works. Classics and experimental, so long as it's got that je ne sais quoi. Samples from Asia: "Electric Dragon 80000v" (courtesy my then-friend-now-beau, so there's a copy currently (heh) within five feet), "House" ("hooooooowsuh"), "Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind", and "Happiness of the Katakuris." (The latter of which I think I was sick and missed, and I keep meaning to amend that, thanks ADHD.) Plus, my favorite professor was very cool. I was a lackadaisical film major but hung around those other weirdos, so I have a decent chance of recognizing various obscure shit TLB and the rest of y'all toss out.

Regardless, I agree! Pretty sure that was my first Beat Takeshi film, too, so "Battle Royale" was like, "Heeeeey (that guy)! --Oh nooo!" (I knew his rep, but still.)
I think this was my favorite version from the soundtrack:

Hi-5! I seriously have never met anyone in the wild who was at all familiar with it. I went through a big film phase in college, when I thought I was gonna be a screenwriter, and plowed through as much Kitano stuff as I could in like a weekend. It's my go-to when I wanna feel mostly good and upbeat, but then want a bit of a cry at the end.

That's definitely a good version. My favorite is the the piano version (Summer)
