I don't remember if it was a video, screenshot, or something a previewer said, but there was one planet that was old and decrepit looking with lots of holes in it, and in the middle of it was a black hole. Well-placed black holes could serve the same function as bottomless pits.
Just look right up one post. :P

Good job Mario Sunshine, having the most unbearably catchy theme that gets stuck in your head for weeks in a platformer since "Escape from the city".
So, as great as SM64 and SMS were, and as great as SMG looks, I still really want a 3D Mario done retro-style. Brick ground, growth Mushrooms, fire flowers that you use the Wiimote to aim, it'd be the greatest thing ever.

I'd be pleased if the fireball mechanics in Super Smash bros. worked more classic.
two rapid fire shots, then nothing until those shots hit something, or bounce off screen.
If Mario's "Adventure Mode" level in Smash Bros. was a perfect recreation of 1-1.
Each character should have a different Adventure Mode. One of the things that got old in SSBM while doing the ol' unlock everything was doing all of Adventure Mode. 25 times.
With Corruption, Brawl and Galaxy all coming out so close to each other, I wouldn't be very surprised to see a demo for one of those popping up on another's disc. Then again, Nintendo has never really done anything like that, but it would still be nice.

I'm expecting the standard demo discs that you see inside of EBstop or whatever to feature the big 3.

I just got a copy of Metroid Prime that has a demo disk of Echoes. Of course, that's a different situation, but they have had demos period it seems.

Yeah, and I distinctly remember Luigi's Mansion having a video for Pikmin right on the disc (though yeah, that's not really a demo).
The Echoes demo was originally offered as a MyNintendo reward (that's how I got mine), and it was later packed in with the Metroid Prime GameCube packs. But they've never went ahead and just sticked a demo right on the same disc as a game.
They COULD man it up and just put a bonus disc right in the Corruption case containing Galaxy and/or Brawl demos (like they did with Mario Kart: DD). That would be awesome.
The bonus disk in the Wind Waker limited edition had a number of videos and I believe a demo of WW. (Which is rather silly considering it came together with it.)

You're thinking of the Zelda Collector's Edition, which was only available through MyNintendo in the US, by registering a number of games. It didn't come with Wind Waker.
You might be confusing it with the OoT/Master Quest disc, which was a pre-order bonus for Wind Waker, which had a WW video on it, but no demo. And you could get that many months before WW came out.

Maybe that's what the did in USA, but my cousin has a copy of Wind Waker saying Limited Edition on the box and containing both the WW and OoT discs. And I think it seemes clear that I was unsure as to whether it actually had a demo.

After watching that video again, I'm still not convinced. It doesn't show any real platforming beyond jumping on the gears at the end, and even then there was no apparent danger.

Yeah, you didn't have to jump over the black hole pit, you just sorta walk around it.
Edit: And is that a person telling the guy how to play? How annoying would that be.

The beginning of the E3 demo showed off an OK sized planet with grass and little hills to climb. Extrapolating that to larger things isn't really that hard, is it? I mean they could grab the lighthouse straight from Sunshine and stick it on a planet if they wanted. That's kinda the neat thing about the Galaxy theme. They can have one of those huge seashells just floating in the middle of nowhere with a windy weird path going around it made from floating blocks or rocks and it really wouldn't seem all that out of place from what we've seen.
The last thing I'm worried about is a lack of platforming in this game.

I'm not worried about level variety at all. From what we've seen, Nintendo is not afraid to throw anything and everything into Galaxy. That's great. I still think Galaxy is going to be relatively weak platforming wise, mostly thanks to the lack of camera control. Unless they come up with something really great, a platforming section similar to the "classic" levels in Sunshine just wouldn't work without camera control.
To me, 3D mario is not about running around doing spin attacks and avoiding holes. It's about wallkicks, backflips, and triple-jumping through difficult platform-based levels.

Man, that looks so fun.
See the power of a little video? That's why I'm really looking forward to this game.
I also think that by having these little planets it'll help get rid of a lot of the camera problems.
Can you imagine playing this game drunk?
Also geez that boss is Colossus-sized.

"Super Mario Galaxy, comes boxed with free Nintendo rep."
I'm sure that the black hole planet was an early example in the game. I can imagine there being harder variations later on.
To me it seems that this game has more "pure" platforming than Sunshine did, and dare I say 64 too.
Whiners have been complaining about lack of voice acting in Nintendo games so...
Though the guidebook publishers aren't going to like this one bit, no siree!

Seems that the latter part of this trailer hints at more traditional platforming in there too.
I mean, just look at that.

I'm the same. I watch those videos and I just want to play. I look down and my hands are waving around the TV remote and a banana instinctively.

BTW, what game is that sprite in your sig from? It's driving me crazy, I know I've seen it somewhere. I'll probably be embarrassed when I find out.

Ah! I've only finished that game once, and it's been years ago.
