Steam says:
Moonbreaker is a turn-based strategy, tabletop tactics game. Designed to be a true digital miniatures experience, set in an expansive sci-fi universe crafted by Brandon Sanderson. Direct Captain & Crew to determine the fate of the Reaches in gripping, ever changing competition & adventure.
It's a rad tactical game! It's in early access! Teams are small, there's a hearthstone-esque mana system for calling in units. You have a captain and a roster, the captain dies, you lose. You take turns moving your units, calling in new ones, and using powers. It's fun!
You can also PAINT THEM.
The painting is shockingly detailed. You don't have to just choose colors for different parts, you can get in there and use a brush and go to town with wash and dry brush and all that.
Some folks seem to be annoyed at the monetization for this 30 dollar game as there is a shop with boosters and such but I will say that it seems like it only takes a few hours of play to unlock every figure so far. Most people who have played a decent chunk seem pretty unphased by the monetization.
I think this has a ton of potential even though I've only played a few games so far. It's really fun and the painting is wild.
Anyone else playing? What's your roster?

They are! I'm honestly not sure why. I think it's due to it being early access and not really clear, because I got this game this morning and have only played a few matches and I could already unlock all figures available so far.
The PVE mode is interesting, it's roguelikeish and you retain the units you make it through each level with, with the same damage and whatnot. But that seems to be annoying folks because you only get enough for one run every day unless you buy more.
PvP, the main mode, seems fine from a monetization standpoint.
I've long believed that the fact that Games Workshop hasn't digitized 40k into an online juggernaut is conclusive proof they can't think outside of the "milk plastic addicted whales for cash" box because they're creatively bankrupt and colossal morons.
How's the PVE in this? I'm intrigued but don't really have time for another MP game in my life.
Well, there you go.
Aside from the paint scheme he gave all his units, which was a war crime
New patch. Pve no longer restricted by a currency and some minor bug fixes.
I have been playing a uh, a lot of this. I'm level 12 I think? I'm pretty sure I win more than I lose and games are so quick it definitely has that "oh I'll just play one more" thing going for it.
Also, I will probably never play a war game ever and always pounce on when a heavy board game goes digital, so this will be my first venture into the genre.
I yearn for the day that quantum AI allows for a digital Twilight Imperium cause I ain't dealing with TTS
Good. Like, if I'm buying a game, you shouldn't be limiting single-player gameplay options. That's... very not OK. Limiting units and whatnot is also kind of sketchy? But if it consistently is just a few hours to unlock, not a big deal. Like, you don't have everything unlocked in Slay the Spire initially, and that's fine.
.... of course, you can't just purchase the cards in StS either, but still...
But anyways this looks cool, I'll have to watch some streams, thanks for making the thread!
Edit: question about the "set in an expansive sci-fi universe crafted by Brandon Sanderson" part. Seems like there's not actually much story content or anything, so how much does this actually mean for the game?

For story stuff they've been doing a lot of streams about the world and setting and stuff but there's also a 30 minute voiced audio drama in the game that is actually pretty good about one of the characters so far. I listened to it while painting units which was perfect for that and really enjoyed it. So they're definitely fleshing it out!
Big win for consumers on this one!
Games Workshop has an active policy to not allow digital properties which threaten their tabletop business. They would never willingly make or allow a game that attempts to be a 1:1 equivalent of the tabletop experience, for the exact reason you mention.
Or buying a box of fancy paint with weird effects.
