I kind of miss when they had video game food. They got Minecraft cereal that is actually pretty good.
A possible downside was constantly marketing towards kids meant the public perceived video games in general as only appropriate for kids. That is, Mario toys in McDonalds Happy Meals were a foot in the door that allowed Joe Lieberman to attempt to regulate the video game industry.
Only a media form that is "just for kids" needs no rating system. This was just part of the industry growing up and becoming more like film, even if some dumb politicians trying to ban things inadvertently kickstarted the change.
I mean it probably didn't help that Midway was marketing MK to minors. Maybe the industry really was driven by kids at the time!
The Mortal Kombat Kollection is pretty good. I did recently get it to work on Windows Live, but no one was on.
There is a dll you can use to bypass Windows Live. I also had to use dgvoodoo2 to force it to 1080p. It was amazing that Windows Live was still running.

1) I haven't been in a record store lately but I'm pretty sure music doesn't have a ratings system beyond an Explicit Lyrics label.
2) Today, I can think of a couple examples of violent M-rated games being promoted on national brands. Call of Duty on your Doritos bags and Gears of War on your cookies, etc.
My memory's hazy but that didn't happen in 1995. Only games that were rated GA (or E for Everyone) got those cross promotional deals. There were no Doom cereals or Night Trap Spaghetti-Os.
A boy and his blob is a NES game that child me spent a lot of time trying to figure out. Many, many hours wasted. I never did. It wasn't till I saw a speedrun of it that I really ever understood what that game wanted from me.
Speaking of LRG, I just got my copies of Kids on Site and Snow Bros. Ordered the A Boy and His Blob Retro one since that isn't a bad price for a physical copy. Had to really stop myself from ordering Loom and Maniac Mansion.
As an example, for someone who owns both a Saturn and a PS1, is it worth spending an extra $100+ to play a slightly better version of Megaman X4?
Sorry, I've still yet to own a Saturn (someday, I hope), but im blanking: what made the Saturn version of X4 slightly better?
Slightly is the key word. There are some nice heat effects in the background of a couple stages that the PS1 version lacks, the load times are better, and the soundtrack loops appropriately instead of fading in and out (as well as having intro sequences). The controller also has a much better d-pad, and you can save directly to the system without a memory card (although these two features are console specific and don't really have anything to do with the quality of the game itself). I feel like the Saturn version is more responsive, but I don't know if that's accurate. MMX4 doesn't seem like the kind of game that is particularly taxing on either console.
The Playstation version has slightly cleaner FMVs and full transparencies (as opposed to a mix of normal and mesh ones on the Saturn) though. While I prefer the Saturn's controller, the upside to the PS1's controller is that if you were coming straight from X3 on the SNES you basically got an identical control scheme with the 2x2 diamond style face buttons (as opposed to having to retrain your muscle memory for the 3x2 arcade style that the Saturn had).
Amusingly enough X3 did also have a port to the Saturn and PS1, but outside of added FMVs and redbook audio it is completely barebones. The SNES original and the PS1 port run at 256x224 with the PS1 version using horizontal stretching, but the Saturn does not actually support resolutions that low and had to run it at 320x240 with letterboxed borders added on each side. The Saturn version runs better, but the borders might be pretty irritating for some people (although they have different ones for each level, which is nice I guess). Both PS1 and Saturn versions have load times out the ass though.
While X4 and X3 are both relatively the same on each system, its Megaman 8 that saw a decent amount of extras added to the Saturn version, making it the one you want to play. The only real problem with playing the Saturn version of Megaman 8 is that you're playing Megaman 8.
I stilll need to put the Satiator in my Saturn. I may hook it up to the bedroom tv. Really, I am waiting for them to finish the core on the MiSTer.
I did get a replacement av cable when I tested it out a while back.
It was modded ages ago.
I got my 360 copy of "Wet" in the mail. The disc has white stuff on it. I think they polished it. I will wash it with dish liquid.
The case was pretty dinged up. I may have a replacement laying around.
I found that Goo Gone actually evaporates. I thought I ruined a cover with it, but I noticed it disappeared later on.

Wet is so fun.
A game I never heard of many years ago but got through that old game swap program on a whim. What was it called? Goozex or something?
I wonder if I can return it on eBay if it doesn't work.
Throw a hissy fit.
I would file a claim right now if the seller did not mention it. Should take a photo before you try anything on it of course, otherwise you probably can't file anything.

Huh, I wasn't aware of some of those (system-specific stuff aside). It's no secret that Saturn got the best version of Mega Man 8, at least in terms of content (hence the constant lamentations that it's only the untouched PS1 game whenever it shows up in a collection), and I knew about the X3 stuff, but didn't know about the minor differences in X4.
I will say, though, that I am one of those who went from SNES to PS1 (and N64, but you know), and yeah, my skills translated pretty directly. Never had a problem with responsiveness, but it would be neat to test the two side-by-side.
Oh, and to be honest, Mega Man 8 has really grown on me over the years. Definitely one of, if not the most unique entry in the Classic series. Just a shame about the voice acting. Would love a redub, but not the Symphony of the Night way, where they take out the old -- gotta preserver the cringe.
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!
Metal Gear Solid was the most cinematic game of that generation but Solid Snake in 1998 didn't even have eyes.
The lack of eyes for anyone in MGS1 (on the 3D models at least) felt like such a deliberate design choice that it was almost integral (pun intended) to the game's overall look. So much so that when MGS2 was shown it actually weirded me out a bit that the characters now had eyes!

They can redub everything but that soul damaging mega man scream. Thats gotta stay. It wouldn't be the same game otherwise.
It's been years since I played either, but I remember enjoying Mega Man & Bass more than Mega Man 8. Like, they borrowed all these assets from MM8, brought it over to an older/weaker system, and managed to make a better game out of it.

I dug the hell out of the fan translated SFC version, the GBA version was too zoomed in at times. Its fine to just zoom in for something like final fantasy, but the lack of screen real estate hurts for an action game like megaman.
Really sad that the SFC version wasn’t in any of the megaman collections.

Yeah, the only good way to play it in English is through emulation. I have it on my 3DS with custom firmware, my SNES Classic, and my Retroid Pocket 2+. I really should play it again on something.
And the companion characters are frankly all kind of a bummer.
I really couldn't get into KOTOR2 when I played it (which was much closer to its release than now). It just had this constantly dour tone in comparison to KOTOR1, which I loved, but will never revisit because the gameplay was bad even back then.

I really agree about the tone.
Everything in the game feels so fucking bleak, and the first few areas are more like survival horror than call-to-adventure.
Well, that copy of "Wet" works. For some reason, my XBOX 360's disc drive is being noisy.
Gee, the previous owner did such a swell job taking care of this game.
The case is all dinged up, the disc was covered in white stuff, and the back of the disc has two scratches.
They must have been a really classy person.
Also, I forgot my Microsoft password and so did the 360. Oh, and Chrome did not save it.
After thinking for a while I finally remembered it.
I really get tired of this bullshit where devices "forget" passwords as a security measure.

I used Amazon for the SDRAM and eBay for the IO board. Got them for a cheaper price. The Mister Addons site is kind of pricey.

Also, you can get it for free on eXoDOS.

I guess this is also visual confirmation that they really wanted I and II to be a single game, which is just nuts. Crazy ambitious.
These Shenmue characters on Saturn are blinking and moving their mouths.
EDIT: Maybe Vagrant Story would be a good comparison. Back when Square was king of graphics and knew the PSX inside and out by 2000.

Beat it in like 25 minutes... though I did rewind a little in a couple of bosses.
But wow, that was a lot shorter than I had remembered. It was all there though... good times... good ol' Sakurai and HAL, too.
Witty signature comment goes here...

Everyone seems to think the story is great.
But the gameplay is just bad.
