My opinion on Tatum is that I generally dislike Boston teams and Boston sports, and so I don't want him to win. I don't think he's at the level of the top guys, but I also don't think he is nearly as bad as his haters think. I think he's pretty squarely in the second tier of NBA super stars, below the level of guys like Jokic, Luka, Giannis, probably Shae, but at or above the level of pretty much anyone else you might want to name.

I also think he is a charisma void. For someone who is so handsome, who wins so much, who has such an athletically pleasing game, he is the most dead-ass boring motherfucker to see talk about anything. So, I don't like him as a superstar/entertainer for that reason.

I don’t think NBA players are anywhere near as bad as YouTube families but the principle is the same.

We are going to have some mentally fucked up people as some of these kids raised on YouTube start becoming adults.

honestly after the kobe text tatum probably should have just deleted all his social media and never gone outside or talked to any human ever again.

never has anything in the world been more cringe.

For the folks who seem anti-Tatum based on him being overrated, how do you view Kyrie? I'm truly curious, because I simply couldn't see a situation where I could cheer for the Mavs.

I love watching Luka - I think he's fantastic. But, having an anti-vax, anti-science, anti-semite on the team coached by Kidd, who has a whole other set of accusations in his past, is just too much for me to ignore.

I’m only rooting for the Mavs because I’m from NY and I do not have the ability to root for a team from Massachusetts.

Also I think Luka should win a ring.

I think saying Tatum is a top 6 player is pretty bold when he wasn't even the best Celtic in that series. Jaylen Brown, the guy the Celtics continually looked at trading, was the one carrying them on both ends while Tatum repeatedly floundered in the fourth quarter.

Simply not accurate - tatum outperformed Jaylen statistically all series but also in the 4th quarter (and the one OT).

Game 1, where everyone said jaylen carried - that was the only shot jaylen hit all quarter. Tatum was +20 in 46 minutes in a 5 pt win - Celtics were outscored by 15 in the 7 minutes he sat. Jaylen, +4.

Tatum has no transcendent skill but he has absolutely no weaknesses. He is well above average at everything. He can fit on any team and gives you endless options for team construction

He’s not going to ever be the best player in the league but I’m not sure when being a top 6 player who wins every single year and who never misses a game and who plays big minutes and whose team is always good and who does all the little things that help a team win and who by all accounts is a good guy and a good father became something to be treated with such contempt

I don't really care if he's a good guy or father, I mean it's good that he is, but I don't take that into consideration when considering how good a player is. And making a team win is always going to look bad when the team you're helping win is a team that the majority of the country doesn't like. His tendency to fold when the pressure is on really counts against him a lot.

People just selectively forget his massive games in huge situations. This is a guy who has dropped 46 on the road and 51 in elimination game wins in playoff series. The discourse around this guy is so bizarre

I went back and looked at that Game 1 to make sure I wasn't hallucinating things. Jayson Tatum hit two-pointer with 9:44 remaining in the 4th quarter. He then completely disappears for the rest of the quarter (though he does go 0-4 for the rest of the quarter) and is missing for half of OT before helping put things away. I'm also not a huge fan of +/- since it's so lineup-dependent, and doesn't take into account having exceptional defenders like Brown and Jrue Holliday (and even Derrick White) which helps to hide Tatum and allows him to focus fully on offense.

I don't think anyone here really cares about how good of a father he is (hell, I think Lebron actually gets hate for being too loving of a father and trying to get his son a job he is not qualified for), and more a tendency for Tatum to put up gaudy numbers but fade to the background when the going actually gets tough. Having the easiest road to the NBA Finals in a long time is certainly not helping him beat those allegations.

Why do you believe jayson tatum is a bad defender? Why do you believe Jaylen brown of all people is a better one? He had a great year but tatum is an elite defender. I have no idea where your idea he needs to be hidden is coming from

  • Knight_Knight_ Dead Dead Dead Registered User regular
brown was better a few years ago, but his defense has fallen off since he took on more offensive load and is mostly coasting on reputation.

tatum is fine defensively, but boston's defensive schemes are super simple because you just switch everything because they don't have any absolute disasters on defense.

Derrick White has, iirc, the best on/off in the whole NBA for players averaging over 25 minutes

Too bad the Knicks were so beat up and missing players this season. Would have liked to see them vs Boston for the semis. Don't particularly like either team but would have been fun to watch.

It would be very Minnesota to win this game.

Minnesota sports teams don’t like disappointing their fans.

They like to give them hope before brutally crushing them.

I don't particularly have any hope for the series, but I wouldn't mind people putting away the brooms

That was a hell of an inbound play.

Sorry Wolves but I’ve got OT hockey to watch now.

Mavs just could not buy a shot at some points tonight, and ANT + KAT showed up (eventually)

Also giving Dwight fucking Powell minutes in the first definitely threw things off, god we miss Lively

Also this is the 5th straight mavs game that I've gone to where they lost a close, winnable game, I should probably stay out of AAC for a while

Which I'm not happy about, I have nothing against the team!

As a Miami fan I have my long standing hatred of Boston contending with the "rivalry" against the Mavs. Plus the garbage humans on the Mavs.

This is a very tough call.

Hmm...while Kings and Rockets are my favorite teams (only two teams I've been to home games for, the King's the last year they were in Kansas City and Houston in the last year of Olijawon and Sampson as their front court, due to family in the area that'd done well in the oil business), I've decided to go fully in the tank for the Mavs this year.

What finally pushed me over the edge, bout 5 minutes ago I just drew a 100 overall rated Luka card in 2k24's MyTeam mode. No matter the challenge going forward, I'll have Luka magic on my side.

Christ, Boston must have hired a witch or something; this is getting ridiculous

See what happens when the Nuggets lose? This is how you get Celtics championships! Nobody wants Celtics championships!

So I never posted the immediate above, because I was a coward and didn't want to count the Wolves out.

I am 100% pulling for Dallas, because dammit, I don't want to see that dogshit Celtics team win a title.

  • TransporterTransporter Registered User regular
I stand by calling the Celtics dogshit by the way.

I will only take solice in Jrue getting another title because he deserves every one.

But holy shit do I hate this Celtics team.

Not THE Celtics. I'm actually rather apathetic to occasionally positive about the team...well, before the fucked Isaiah Thomas. But even then I'm pretty much apathetic.

No I hate THIS Celtics team. I will not respect any team who's strategy after throwing up 19.7 million three's is, "uh...fuck it, Iso I guess????"
