Hey Steam thread, long time no chat. I was hoping you pc folks could answer a very easy computer question.

I have a computer but I don't keep it super updated anymore (hence my vanishing from here). It's a decent CPU with good ram but the video card is a Radeon hd7850 so it's been bottlenecked for awhile.

The good news is my son is upgrading and I'm taking his old card, an r9 290x (which used to be Pixelated Pixie's actually). It's now going to its third home, my PC, to hopefully allow me to play Planet Coaster/Zoo at a better framerate. However, my power supply is an old 450w and didn't have the proper plugs on it to power the monstrous card (seriously, this thing is huge.)

Given I'm far from a power user and it's only used casually, I'm not overclocking, or trying to do any fake coin mining, there's no reason I can't do a super basic 700w at Best Buy/Amazon for $75ish is there? I wouldn't have any reason to go higher end would I? They just fluctuate a ton in price and I want to make sure I'm not messing up going low end.

@Lindsay Lohan I just looked up the recommended PSU for that card, you should be fine at anything 600w or higher. One thing I would recommend though, is that while you're perfectly fine getting one with that low of a power output, don't just buy the cheapest one you can find, make sure to get one from a known quality manufacturer. A low quality PSU can kill your entire PC fairly easily, and it's not usually a huge price difference to get something decent.

I haven't even seen the alien yet and it's already the most tense I've been in a survival horror.

My favorite part of Alien Isolation was using the Alien to do my dirty work (killing NPCs who were in my way so I could loot their corpses).

Hiding under a table listening to the panicked screams of the group of douchebags who were just shooting at me a minute ago is incredibly satisfying gameplay.

Just as a thought exercise for now: can the Steam Deck run FF14 if you run the Steam version of the game?

This is actually GabeN's favorite game right now. Although you should expect 30 FPS by default.

That's fine. If I go down that road, any FF playing would be crafting while I watch stuff with my wife.

Thanks! I went with a 700w of a brand I had heard of, just didn't spring for the high end model. Hopefully by Wednesday I'll be PC gaming a bit more (once I finish Diablo on the console). Sounds like this card is double the strength of my old one so I'm pretty excited.

As someone who once went from a 7850 to that very same R9 290X, I can assure you that the upgrade is noticeable. ;)

Also, back then I powered it with a 650w Corsair PSU, fwiw.

I think I may still have that 7850 in a box somewhere. I'm not 100% positive whether I got it from you or not, it was dark and there was a lot of interforum hardware swapping back then. I think I went from that to a 280x, then an RX 580, then to my current 5700xt. I don't remember who ended up with my previous two GPUs though.

We really should have had a Flat Stanley for some of these cards.

I liked that, in keeping with the first movie, the scariest things on the station are synthetics.

Ian Holm was terrifying. As bad as the Alien is, at least it won't try to awkwardly asphyxiate you with the one used, dog-earned porno mag on the deep space version of an oil rig.

I've been enjoying Dave the Diver. It's got a gameplay loop that keeps me enthralled.

You dive into the 'great blue hole', a mysterious piece of the ocean that changes each time you dive. Nice bit of lampshading to explain away your random dungeon ocean. You start out by catching fish with your harpoon gun and collecting various bits and pieces on the ocean floor which can be used for crafting.

Each day is split into three parts: morning, afternoon and night. You can dive in both the morning and afternoon, but the evening is where doing all that fishing comes into play. You bring your seafood to a sushi restaurant, set the menu, and run around serving green tea to customers before taking prepared dishes to those who ordered them before they lose patience and walk out.

You level up in various ways. Customer satisfaction gets you points on Cookstagram that eventually level up your restaurant, increasing your menu size, staff capacity, etc. You can use the money you've earned in the restaurant phase to purchase upgrades to your diving gear, and so the loop goes.

There's several special missions while underwater, but I'll leave those for people to discover.

Also, your gun merchant is a gigantic weeb and I love the pixel art cutscenes, like when Duff first crafts you a gun and he looks over to his waifu figurine on his desk and his glasses give off an anime glint.

What a weirdly sparse sale. Not just the sales themselves, but the only sign there is a sale is a banner and that's it. You can't even click it. They don't even have stickers or anything.

Yeah I was impressed and would recommend. Peril on Gorgon feels like it should just have been part of the main game, it blends in pretty seemlessly and gives a bunch of context to the world. It slots in right after Monarch. The worst thing you can really say about it is it’s more of the same, but in a game that feels too small and really needs more of the same.

Mystery on Eridanos is more like a traditional Bethesda or obsidian DLC. Its set in its own little area, unlike Peril it is pretty self contained and doesn’t send you all over the system. It can be done pretty much any time but will be really hard if you try to do it before monarch, so I recommend doing it around the same time as Peril. Story is a bit cliche but remains compelling in spite of it and the characters are all really well written. Probably the best individual content of the game.

It's the Spacer's Choice Edition. Which is supposedly something like a remaster, and includes all content + some visual upgrades and quality of life content like higher level cap. I was looking to buy this when it was announced. But when it came out, I saw all the negative reviews, because it supposedly performs like crap. I'm not sure if they've fixed it, so, just be aware that there are issues with the spacer's choice edition.

I understand the lack of eight hour timed sales, but the lack of anything else feels a bit disappointing. At least having to go to the thread to understand the rules of the new thing brought the thread together and helped the sense of community. I'm happy for the sale, but it doesn't seem like an event anymore.
