The Thread about [Twitter] where we aren’t calling this shit goddamn “X”

LanzLanz ...Za?Registered User regular
edited August 2023 in Social Entropy++

Here be the twitter thread, the thread where we discuss the continued degradation and rot of everyone’s… favorite(???) bird themed social media platform after it became privately owned by everyone’s (least) favorite apartheid emerald failson.

The dipshit’s latest foible was this past weekend where, as best anyone can tell, he refused to pay google approximately one billion dollars owed for the continuing use of their Google Cloud service, leaving others at twitter to try and scramble to either get the fee paid in time and/or pull off as much of Twitter from there and register as possible. This resulted in constants Rate Limiting issues rendering the service practically unusable for most users through the weekend, with Musk making the excuse it was being purposefully done to combat web scraping that was supposedly degrading service. But he’s a known liar and charlatan so you can be sure that was almost assuredly complete bullshit.

Then, within the last couple of days, Musk’s stupidity and chintziness has come back to haunt him as fellow Silicon Valley Asshole, vanguard of national political destabilization and resident creepy Caesar fanboy Mark Zuckerberg and Meta launched their twitter competitor, Threads, designed and helmed by many of the former twitter workers whom Musk fired nearly one year ago. He is very mad about this, and while Threads sucks he can blow it out his ass because, again, he created this problem for himself by being a bastard and an asshole.

It’s also where we talk about national and global events of some import, because sharing is caring in our rapidly escalating hellscape and it’s better to let that shit out than fester like a tiny weevil of nihilistic desperation caged within the soul without escape.

A link to the full text of a letter seeking leniency for a defendant convicted of federal narcotics violations in the death of my friend and colleague Michael K. Williams, as referenced in a NYT article today:
    https://davidsimon.com/a-letter-for-leniency/

David Simon writing directly and clearly in favor of mercy and compassion, in trying to interrupt cycles of tragedy instead of worsening them. It is a terrible thing, losing a friend, and I find this to be a truly beautiful way of trying to honor the spirit of one lost. Recommended read, if bittersweet.

I am genuinely envious of people who have the space and talent to express themselves so concisely and artfully. My own abilities have waned considerably over the years, to the point where I'm not even sure I could write more than a few paragraphs on any given subject if pressed to do so. Even a subject I like to talk about, y'know? Probably should've selected a career path that wasn't so action-centric with little room for personal expression if I wanted to foster it, but here we are.

Anyways, I'm gonna go get drunk and disassociate.

Musk suing the people who forced him into buying twitter like he agreed to is some amazing shit.

Not the funniest thing Elon has ever done. (That would be getting in bed with DeSantis, failing misrabally, removing view counts from posts to hide how poorly it did, but not doing it on android, possibly because you fired the android developers.) but pretty damn funny.

Never his fault, is it? "They should have STOPPED me from buying Twitter, how dare they make me do what I agreed to do!"

Some good news for the new thread.

Just a reminder, the Robodebt scheme was a program run under the former Liberal Party government that clawed back welfare payments by (mistakenly) auditing receivers and sending notices that they owed sometimes tens of thousands of dollars in overclaimed Centrelink payments for having earned more than they were allowed to qualify for payments.

If a participant was on Centrelink for 3 months of a year before finding a job, they would average the income from the 9 months across the entire 12 month period and say they owed the payments for those 3 months back.

This led to multiple suicides and in the case of people who received the letter and pushed back too hard through the department, politicians or media they had their private details kept by the government leaked to friendly conservative media outlets in order to slander and discredit them in the eyes of the public as whiners.

    https://www.theage.com.au/politics/federal/robo-debt-report-recommends-criminal-and-civil-prosecutions-20230706-p5dm71.html
Top bureaucrats met for crisis talks on Friday afternoon to discuss the implications for the public service after royal commissioner Catherine Holmes, SC, delivered her 990-page report into a scheme she said was plagued by collusion and dishonesty in concealing its unlawfulness.
But Morrison, who took the initial proposal to cabinet as social services minister in 2015, issued a lengthy defence of his actions after Holmes found he had allowed cabinet to be misled over the legality of the scheme and gave untrue evidence to the commission.

Holmes said Morrison’s evidence that he was told the use of income averaging – the core feature of the automated debt recovery scheme – was an established practice was “untrue” and inconsistent with other evidence he had given in December.
She also accused former human services minister Alan Tudge of an “abuse of power” for pursuing welfare recipients in the media to deflect from mounting criticism of robo-debt, and said former social services minister Christian Porter “could not rationally have been satisfied of the legality of the scheme”.

Former government services minister Stuart Robert went “well beyond supporting government policy” as a cabinet minister in defending the scheme despite knowing its flaws, she said.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-07-07/robodebt-royal-commission-findings-revealed/102531450
Unnamed individuals will be referred for criminal and civil prosecution after a royal commission handed down its report into the unlawful Robodebt scheme on Friday.

Commissioner Catherine Holmes branded the former Coalition government's debt-raising scheme an "extraordinary saga" of "venality, incompetence and cowardice".

"The report paints a picture of how the Robodebt [scheme] ... was put together on an ill-conceived, embryonic idea," Commissioner Holmes wrote.

"It is remarkable how little interest there seems to have been in ensuring the scheme's legality, how rushed its implementation was, how little thought was given to how it would affect welfare recipients and the lengths to which public servants were prepared to go to oblige ministers on a quest for savings."

The ABC has confirmed that people are being referred to the Australian Federal Police, the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the Law Society (although it is unclear which jurisdiction), and the Australian Public Service Commissioner.

The three-volume, 990-page report, includes 57 recommendations – the culmination of hundreds of hours of evidence, thousands of exhibits, and nearly a million documents.

the main thing that kills twitter is just if it gets boring. that's the main thing that made the rate limit so dangerous. first time that made people just be bored with it

tragically this means that much of the dog and pony show musk puts on, where people go "what's going wrong with twitter NOW", actively keeps it alive

If you've ever had a beautiful or passionate thought surging from within you that feels special and true, it becomes your responsibility to plant that idea on paper, cultivating it with the best prose you can find to do service to your original experience. The stronger or more abundant the intention and inspiration, the less inadequacies of form cause your heartfelt communication to fail.

To be able to do this professionally requires a lifetime of training , but if the conditions are right and you can get to the right headspace, you can do justice to the handful of moments in your life where your skill in expression is called upon and perform in a manner that would surprise the current you.

    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/07/dismissing-moderate-minority-voters-as-gop-pawns-is-denial.html
Progressives are too reluctant to discuss the increasingly undeniable reality that the Democratic Party is being pulled leftward by its white college-educated elite and is losing non-white voters to the Republican Party. Disinformation or some other form of ignorance is not what’s causing Democrats to lose these voters; they are making rational decisions based on their policy preferences. Democrats have moved to the left on social issues and are losing their most socially moderate voters as a result.

Now, Democrats can argue in some cases that these losses are an acceptable cost. Defending vulnerable minorities is one of the party’s core missions, and Democrats have generally been willing to pay a political price to stand in solidarity with targeted groups. I happen to be a secular Jew who is not terribly sympathetic to any of the complaints of these protesters, who leaned heavily on Christian and Muslim religiosity. I believe schools have an obligation to teach their students mutual respect for all their fellow students, including gay and trans kids.

But when the opposing party is dangerous and authoritarian, parties need to be very selective about which positions they’re willing to lose voters over. If Democrats are willing to lose non-white voters rather than compromise their social values, that’s a valid choice. But they should at least be aware of the choice they are making.

Politics requires trade-offs. Many Democrats have been living in a fantasy world where moving left on every issue will help them by mobilizing more minority voters. If they recognized any voters they might lose in the process, they were dismissed as white Dixiecrats getting in touch with their inner Strom Thurmonds. If Democrats choose to allow their moderate voters to draft to the GOP, they should at least be aware of just who those swing voters are.

“listen have you considered that social progression is a White Person thing and that it might be driving off the democrats minority base? I’m Jonathan Chait and I’m very smart and telling you that you need to slow down.”

Today is the one-year anniversary of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo's assassination. However, July 8th is also Gundam Day because the mobile suit from the popular 1979 anime series had a "78" model number. Right now Gundam is actually above Abe in the trending terms ranking.

Blame this on the misfortune of your birth, Shinzo.
